I want to know the symptoms your child had (or yourself as a child) before diagnosed with Epilepsy. My son's seizures started when he watched a scary movie over a year ago. He had 2 seizures like episodes that night. I thought he just had a nightmare and woke up shaking. Then he didn't get them again until a couple months later. So we took him to the emergency, but the seizure only lasted a few seconds, so the ER couldn't do anything about it without witnessing it. So, I took my son to a specialist, and they couldn't do anything without knowing for sure that he was having seizures. So this went on for several more months. And each time the seizures would be getting worse. But each time he got them he would know before by the tingling he would get in him foot that would travel up his leg then would cause his whole body to shake uncontrollably, he was aware the whole time. But then one day he wasn't responsive anymore during the attack. So that scared me. And finally his neurologist said that he was having seizures this whole time and he want to make sure that’s what it was before he treated him for Epilepsy. So now my son is under treatment for Epilepsy. He started taking Trileptal 300mgs twice daily. But recently was increased to 450mg twice daily, because he started getting the tingling sensation again. The good news is that my son hasn't had a seizure since being on this medication, which he started taking this past thanksgiving. My question is once treated and off medication, what happens next. Did your child get the seizures back? Did they go away? Any input on this topic would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi I wanted to tell you Personally was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was 8 yrs old, I was on medication for 8 years, and by the age of 16 I had to pass and EEG after being off my medicine for 3 months and I did, this was in order to receive my drivers license, I will be honest I am 28 yrs old and certain things like drinking alcohol and extreme lack of sleep can trigger very mild episodes but I have not been on any prescribed medication for 12 years now and I am fine. I just take care of myself and make sure my brain gets enough rest and I don't take alcohol since it can trigger it. So yes there is a possiblity that they can be controlled and eventually go away. Hi my daughter was diagnosed with Epilepsy when she was also 10. She is now almost 15 and is still dealing with them. Some times kids will out grow the seizures and not have any problmes when they are older. The doctor thought that my daughter would have outgrown hers by now, and has not. My daughter has just gotten out of the hospital because of her seizures. I know that they can be very scary, We have been dealing with this for almost 5 years now, and they still freak me out. My daughter is on Depakote, and they are currently playing with her meds right now to hopefully get her seizures under control. I, nor my child, personally has ever has seizures, but I am a RN and I work with a lot of patiets who have epilepsy. Usually, not all the time though, when a patient is diagnosed with epilepsy or any other chronic seizure disorder, it takes long term treatment. I see patients all the time who haven't had a seizure in many years and who are still on thier medication. It is great that he is able to tell you when a seizure is about to happen because of the aura (tingling) that he experiences. Many people don't ever experience an aura and the siezure just hits. Epilepsy isn't somthing that can be cured, like a cold, but it can be managed. With medication and learning what triggers his siezures, you can avoid them completely. Now, I have only had patients with severe epilepsy and grand mal seizures, so your case could actually be more promising. I have Epilepsy. I was diagnosed at 12 with symptoms identical to what you are discribing. The one thing that you HAVE to know and come to accept is that it is very possible that he will be on meds for the rest of his life. My neuro said that I would be off of them by 18...I'm 26 and still on them. I take Lamictal 200mg 2x daily. I still have an aura occasionaly but it isn't enough to make me want to switch meds. I was on Tegretol. It worked good but your body becomes immune to it eventually. I took it for 13 years with no side effects other then weight gain.
This is what my neuro told me..."You have a seizure disorder. It sucks, but it doesn't control your life. Treat it and get on with your life."
One note: Epilepsy is VERY common. 1 in every 10 people has had a seizure at some point in their lives. Make sure he knows that he's not alone out there. You can overcome it.

Hi. I'm new here so bear with me! My son started having seizure's when he was 9months old. I took him to neuroligist at Leboner in Memphis Tn. He was put on Phenobarbatol. The medicine did stop the seizure's. It was determaned later that my son suffered from febral seizure's. Meaning that he only had a seizure when his fever would get above 101.00. He evuntually grew out of them. His were due to the fact that when he was born, he had adult size ear drums in a baby's ear. Sounded silly at first, but adult ear drums are positioned different than babies and kids. Anyway, if you are not 100% sure it's epilepsy, this may be one of the reasons.
