My son just turned one, and I'd like to wean him off his day nursings and continue nursing him in the morning and before bed. The problem is, he won't even look at whole milk! We've tried sippy cup, bottle, mixed with breastmilk, and we might try mixing with formula next (he's had about 4 oz. of formula a week for the last couple of months because I'm not pumping quite enough milk). What has worked for you? I am very hesitant to mix with more breastmilk, as I hate to waste what he won't drink!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all of your varied responses! I ended up mixing a bit of banana in with the milk, which is working okayish:) I will keep offering it, and hopefully he will take to it soon. It's nice to hear from other moms who have tried different real life solutions.

I might be late on this but I was wondering if you tryed soy milk or even better rice or almond milk. Now a days you can find these fortified, etc. Hyvee, dahls, and health food stores all carry these.
Good luck!

All I can say is try, try again. I'm the mother of 2 girls (3 & 1) and neither were too excited to switch to cows milk after breast milk. I even went so far with my first as to put a tiny bit of chocolate syrup in the milk and that was the ticket to get her to start drinking it. Eventually they both came around but I offered it in a sippy cup at every meal no matter what. Finally they quit resisting and drank it. They are both plain old white milk lovers now.

I would like to suggest using real milk. I would assume that you are buying milk from a grocery store that has been processed and pasturized and probably from cows that have been bred and fed to solely produce mainstream milk. There is great information on the why, what and where to get real milk. http://www.realmilk.com/what.html. Since moving to upper WI, I have been giving my daughter real milk from a local farm, and she loves it! (we both do) Her immunity has never been stronger. I would warm it up in his bottle in warm water on the stove like back in the day-as microwaving isn't safe. Some info on it. http://www.ghchealth.com/microwave-ovens-the-proven-dange.... (there is a section specifically about baby's milk) or you can do a search for it and find all kinds of info. on it. I hope this helps.

Try soy milk. Some kids like that better.

My son at that age would not have cow juice either (he had never had artifical).

He would have yogurt, fromage fris. We tried making it into milk shakes but he was NOT interested. We only gave him the cups with spouts that would not leak. What about water?

I know that you would like him only to feed morning night, but if poss, just keep offering a little and he will probably come round. Think about it breast milk, for a human baby or cow juice for a baby cow? what would you choose :)

Try water, try giving him more time ...

My youngest just turned 1 on the 23rd. We started giving her 2% about a week before she turned one (she doesn't need the extra fat in whole milk). I was giving it in a sippy cup but she didn't care for it. Although I didn't want her to drink milk from a bottle, we got her to take it warmed up in a bottle. So now we give her a 4oz bottle in the morning and at meals we give her the sippy cup and she will drink it if she wants it and than a 6oz one before she goes to bed at night. At this time, I don't mind her still taking a bottle if thats what it takes. My doctor wasn't concerned either. We also offer her water in a sippy cup during the day also.

Try the formula (mix formula with water and add the milk) or heating the milk. It is common for breastfed kids to not like cows milk while they are still nursing. If the formula thing doesn't work keep trying milk but don't worry about it. Kids don't need that much once they are one year old (2 servings a day). They should be getting most of there nutrients from food. You can give him cheese and yogurt to make up for the calcium in milk. Your breastmilk still has many vitamins, so like I said. Don't worry about it.

Hi B.! I wouldn't worry too much about the cow's milk thing. I read that you are nursing a bit each day? That seems like it would be okay. Also, you could try goat's milk. My daughter loves that.
I agree with another poster that cow's milk is not great for people BUT the idea that all animal products are not good for us is false information.
I don't blame you for not wanting to mix more breastmilk with the whole milk! That is precious stuff!

A good friend's daughter had the same problem - she started her on the Stoneyfield Farms Yo Baby yogurt drink (comes in 4 pack bottles.) They work great in a sippy or an open cup. Then she slowly started thinning the yo baby with milk, until her daughter got used to the less-sweet taste (this did take until she was almost 2, though by the end it was really just a token splash of yogurt in the cup of milk.) And don't sweat the milk thing too much - as long as he's getting lots of cheese and yogurt, he's getting enough protein and calcium. Just be careful not to give him too much juice as a beverage substitute - it'll fill him up on relatively empty calories, and maybe give him diarrhea. Good luck!

We are having this problem, and our neighbor said they used a bit of chocolate and slowly decreased the amount of chocolate they added until she'd drink plain milk (she's 15 mos now; it apparently didn't take too long). I know the daycare my oldest went to did the same; I hated it because my oldest would drink milk with no problem and I didn't want him to have the chocolate!

Also--I suspect it is a NURSING problem--my oldest was on bottles of breastmilk, and he had no issues switching; my baby, who has had me home and rarely has to take a bottle, does not enjoy the sippy cup. So we started giving him bottles a little more, hoping the sippy transition would be easier. He also seems to prefer drinking from a cup, as long as it's something he wants; we're even trying that right now. Good luck; we haven't found the answer yet, but those are the things we've tried!

My daughter hated whole milk at first too! I ended up nursing until 18 months, because she just wouldn't drink whole milk. We tried giving strawberry and chocolate, soy, rice... she didn't like any of it. She did however like skim milk so we gave her that for a couple weeks, then 1%, 2% and finally whole, yea!

I friend of mine had issues with her daughter too and for them warming the whole milk worked.

Good Luck!

B. - Personally, I wouldn't be too concerned about not liking cow's milk. It's actually a very allergic food. Some people even think it's unhealthy. You might want to try goat's milk or rice milk. There are lots of other foods that are high in calcium that can be introduced in the diet if you're worried about how much calcium he is getting.

Good luck,

I haven't read the other responses, so I don't know if this has already been suggested, but have you tried 2% milk? My son (now 14 months) was the same exact way about whole milk - just would not drink it!!! But we gave him some 2% after his doctor recommended it and he loves it. My son isn't completely weaned off of nursing - he still nurses in the morning and before bed - but during the day is happy to have a sippy with milk. Anyway, his doctor said that as long as we are giving him cheese and yogurt with the full fat for brain development, 2% would be just fine - maybe check with your doctor first to make sure this would work for your son, but so far, its worked really well for us.

Good luck!

Have you tried heating it up to body temp? Maybe he just likes the warmth of breastmilk. Otherwise, just keep trying whole milk, not breastmilk involved. I'm sure he just has to acquire a taste for the new.

I personally would encourage you to stay away from cow's milk altogether for your little ones sake. Cow's milk is SO hard for little ones bodies to breakdown!!! Typically children that intake lots of cow's milk will end up with lots of ear infections, colds etc.

Have you thought about trying soy milk (Silk brand)? My kiddos have never had cow's milk and they love soy milk and "knock on wood" they have never had an ear infection to this day (6 year old, 4 year old & 10 months)!!!

Thanks for letting me share~

What about other dairy instead of drinking milk? I still breastfeed my 25 month old. He didn't start on milk until almost 2 years old. Up to then it was my milk or water for drinking. We gave other dairy - cheese, yoghurt, etc. for fat and calcium. I read that 1 oz cheese is the equivalent of 8 oz milk.

my granddaughter couldn't have the milk for a while and she was on soy formula. When we went to change her over to milk, we found a child's foritified vanilla soy milk. She loved it even when she hated regular milk. After she was drinking that well, we started doing a 1/4 regular milk, 3/4 soy then down to 1/2 regular and 1/2 soy. She is now on regular milk but not whole milk. She drinks 2% at her house and that seems to be going good with her. I have 1% at my house and she drinks that without any trouble too. Her doctor says that she gets enough fats in other foods this is fine. Her weight is right in the average area on the scale.

Our son is 12 months and doesn't like to drink the milk unless it is really warm, like breast milk would be. They say to warm it up under warm water and not in the microwave because of hot spots. I have started to use the microwave under 50% power and shake it up after.

my son hated cows milk too. first of all - a minor note that cows milk (and all animal products) arent good for us anyway. so you could use soy or rice milk, but remember, that a healthy diet of fruits vegetables and legumes, milk is NOT nutritionally necessary, no matter what the industry says.

anyway, my son wouldnt take milk either. he self weaned at 19 months old, so i wasnt at all concerned with his milk intake. however, when i added a bit of chocolate syrup to the milk, he drank it no problem. the doctor and wic office didnt care as long as he was drinking. so give that a try. breastmilk is naturally more sweet, so adding a sweet to the milk might encourage him to drink more. :D

My sons (now 1 1/2 and 4) were the same way. Whole milk must not taste good after drinking breast milk! :) The only way I could get them to drink milk was to add some strawberry syrup or some Ovaltine. They especially loved whole milk blended with a little ovaltine and a banana.
After my four-year old quit nursing at night at the age of 23 months, he was fine with regular milk. He drinks it easily now, and loves it plain, chocolate, strawberry, banana etc.

I had the same issue with my son when he turned one, with the exception that he was a formula baby. What my doctor told me to do and it broke my heart but it worked was to give him the milk and I could even do 1/2 milk and 1/2 formula and offer it everythime he wanted something to drink and that is what I did. I was worried that he would get dehydrated but he didn't. I did still give him juice with breakfast and some water between meals but not much. It took a week or two but it worked. Also, try warming it a little.
