15 Month Old Daughter Having Surgery Tuesday for a Dermoid Cyst Helpful Thoughts

well i rarely hear this term/type of cyst, but i am a 30 something mom now and i had one myself which was removed from my right temple when i was around a year old. no ill effects and certainly technology was under-developed 30 years ago so you should be in super safe condition to have this done. and the good news is, like me, she won't ever remember it and will only have her mom to tell her that it happened!!

A friend of mine's little girl just had one removed as well and she did great. She has a tiny scar but looks great. Everything went smoothly with the surgery and recovery. I hope all goes well with your little girl as well. My baby is having hypospadis surgery this week so I know what you feel like anticipating your baby having surgery. I think it is harder on us mommies than on the little ones.

I can reassure you that she will be OK. My daughter had her cyst in the thyroid area removed at 9 months. She was perfectly fine. The surgery took 30 minutes. Pediatric surgeons are very specialized. And kids are SO resilient. All we needed to manage her pain was tylenol. And she only needed it in the middle of the night. Your child will not remember a thing. The hardest thing about the whole surgery was the stress and worry over Mommy, Daddy and the relatives. She is a happy bouncy 4 year old today. She is scarfree (the Surgeon recommended I rub Palmer's Cocoa Butter Serum after it healed). So there is no trace of the surgery. Sometimes we will tell our daughter about the minor surgery she had at less than a year old. She doesn't believe us because she can't see the scar on her neck.

Try and make it fun for her. Stay up beat and don't let her see you worry. Avoid getting sentimental at all costs.

Remember that she won't have much pain or discomfort. She will be confused and groggy when she wakes up. One minute she's fine and, to her, the next minute she's in a different room and can't wake up. Let her rest and let her know you're there but don't pressure her to wake up. It will just frustrate her. I know, I just had out patient surgery yesterday. It might be many long hours before she feels like moving around again. Also, she might not be hungry for a day or longer. Don't pressure her to eat.

If she experiences any trauma, which I doubt she will, it's a good idea to seek help from a child therapist.

My son had his dermoid cyst removed which was on the inside corner of his eye. NO problems after the surgery. He brought a stuffed animal with him to cuddle with. He felt just a little sick to his stomach and a little shaky when waking up but was fine later that day.
Your daughter will be fine. Make it fun for her and dont let her see that you are nervous.

Just remember the people who are involved with the surgery have been trained and educated to do that jobs. Hundreds of surgeries are done every day in every facility that turn out well. When my son was four months old, he had surgery for a double hernia. I was so worried. I don't thinnk anyone could have helped, even though it was "simple outpatient surgery". Everything went so good. It was over with vwey quickly. My advice to you is, if your daughter is having outpatient surgery, they will give you a perscription for some medicine as you are leaving for pain. Make sure you get it filled somewhere around the hospital. We had waited until we got back in town, and he was in so much pain. I ended up holding him part of the way home because he was hurting being in his car seat. Just give her lots of love and lets her get plenty of rest. It will be over before you know it.
