1St Birthday at Park on a Budget

I am having my son's 1st birthday party at a park. The theme is mickey mouse clubhouse. We plan on renting a bouce house. Any suggestions on where to rent one? Also, we are looking for a lot of great cuban food--but not too expensive. Is tacky to register for gifts at walmart or target? Any suggestions on games or other activites that won't cost too much out of pocket? There is going to be 50 or more people.

What can I do next?

Go to the Disney web site. They have printables for parties (I think it's called the Celebration Center). They have game suggestions, crafts for the older kids, etc. My son's first b-day was Mickey Mouse Clubhouse too and I got almost all my ideas of the web site. We got Blue Sky Food by the Pound for a good price too.

Blue Sky usually has great catering for Cuban food.
For pastellitos, bocaditos, & croquettas, I suggest Holiday Bakery in Miami Lakes or La Fe bakery in West Hialeah (Red Road and W 29 St, Hialeah). They are both super yummy!!

I've never heard of a kids registry and, I do think it can be misconstrued as tacky or offensive to some. You don't want people to think they have to bring a gift in order to attend and a registry may imply that.

Good luck!

Dear C.,

I'm not sure what you consider to be "on a budget" but in our world, a bounce house is extravagent, and not budget conscious. I've not seen any for less than $200! Besides, a one year old is too little for a bounce house anyways - is it for your 5 year old and her friends?

You know your child the best, but in my experience, one year old birthdays that include too many people and too much "stuff" don't go so well for the birthday child. Better to save this for when he is at least 3!

Be thankful and gracious for any birthday gifts your son receives (they are NOT necessary) and if there are duplicates or things you don't approve of, then donate them.

Happy 1st birthday to your son! C.

Hi C.,

I'm not sure where you are, but I've rented a bounce house from buggy's bouncers for $99. They were on time and clean. You need to make sure the park has a working electrical outlet, or else you have to rent a generator also. I rented a clown from them too once and the clown was AWFUL, so don't do that with them.

I've never heard of registering for gifts for a kids party, but who knows?

I heard Little Havana on 125th and Biscayne has the best cuban food. Hope it goes well!

I've NEVER heard of a registry for birthday gifts...
you get what you get & you don't get upset, LOL!
I always take the 'good' gifts for my kids and anything I find junky, etc, I save to donate to charity- either right away (if you're organized) or wait for the holidays...
as for things for them to do: get a pavillion in the park right next to the playground, that's all the entertainment you need- that & the bounce house should be enough! maybe some bubbles and sand toys if there's a sand box, but that's all.
Cuban food doesn't have to be expensive- ask around-look for the little 'windows' where people buy their cafe con leches, etc. and ask the folks there- very often they do catering on the side!
as for where to get a bounce house: ask the park who they know has come to that park before...

most of the parks have a service you can rent from. being at the park in and of itself provides many activities, the swings etc. but you can get kites from the dollar store, bubbles, silly string water balloons...
