Help!!! I have been struggling with my 4 almost 5 month old daughter having acid reflux and gas. We have tried Zantac and Prevecid, both made her stop spitting up but then scream because all her gas was getting trapped inside, plus she stopped sleeping at night with both of them. We just tried switching her to the really expensive formula that is suppose to be for babies with colic and acid reflux and she is still the same and it seems like less spit up but you can hear the fluid come up but then she chokes on it. The gas drops don't work!!! She is a very happy baby other than when she has gas. I don't care about the spit up I just want to give her relief from the gas. I know what it feels like as I have IBS. Does anyone have any ideas. I have tried all different formulas, acid reflux meds, and baby gas drops. Her ped recommended Mylanta but without Aluminum and we can't find that. To make matters worse, she is also teething and has an ear infection. Help!!!

What can I do next?

When my son had those problems, I got some homeopathic drops from the health food store for colic and gas. That did seem to help. Good luck!

J.-
Both of my girls have the reflux. The first was a spitter and the second one is a silent refluxer. She would hold her breath and stop breathing because it caused so much discomfort. She is on the precavid not and it works good. Have you tried giving her smaller doses of the medicine more times a day. We give it to her 3 times a day at 1 ml. We were also told that the prevacid causes gas. That is a downfall for that medicine. Our GI also told us that they could put her on a higher dose of Pepcid if it continued to be a problem. As the medicine got in her system it got better. Also we were told to raise her matress at nite and have it slanted so she is not laying flat. You can prop it up under the mattress with blankets and pillows. She as well likes to sit up, I use a moby wrap and she loves it. You can go to the website, www.mobywrap.com. You can also feed her smaller feedings more times a day. That keeps less liquid in her stomach and will help from keeping it so full so it comes back up. Our little one is doing much better. We also have her on the Enfamil Gentleease. It is already digested so she doesn't have to work as hard. If you have any other questions please ask. We have had to deal with this with both kids. Also, are they eating cereal now? If so you can get the prevacid in a powder and can mix it into the cereal. It worked better than the liquid did.

Good luck!

Our daughter was also colicky with reflux and gas. During the day, wearing your baby upright in a sling or wrap can really, really, really help with the acid reflux and gas (see thebabywearer.com or www.peppermint.com). You can go about your business and have your hands free and she can nap when she needs to that way. At night having your baby sleep in her carseat so she is upright will also help. For soothing her, we were told about Dr. Harvey Karp's,
"The Happiest Baby on the Block" method and it worked FANTASTIC for us. We also used Gripe Water (you can get it at Baby's R Us, it is for colic, gas and hiccups I think) and would give it to her when she would start "foaming at the mouth" from her reflux, it worked great, but check the ingredients to make sure you are comfortable with it. Also, I know it is work, but with the help of a lactation consultant or a La Leche League leader you could try to re-lactate, breastmilk would really help with all of the problems, including the ear infection. I know it's tough, we just wanted her to feel better! Eventually with all of thse things she did. And the other lady who responded is absolutely right, luckily they grow out of it!

Have you asked your doctor, if you child is allegic to the formula. Or have you tried soy milk. My nephew has the same problem and it cleared up once they switch to a soy milk formula.

Try Dr. Browns bottles - BPA free of course - they sell them at Babies R Us. They are specially designed to reduce gas. I have a friend that had a baby with refux and they would have him sit up for at least 30 min after feeding to help. good luck!

Try soy formula and try 2 oz feedings more often. They outgrow it eventually.
