Allergies - Centreville,VA

Until about a month ago my 5 year old was healthy with just a few seasonal allergies. Then, he began to break out in hives when eating fruit. I took him to an allergist and they determined that he had severe tree and grass allergies, but no allergies to fruits. He told me my son had Oral Allergy Syndrome. Some fruits have similar proteins to trees, so when my son eats fruit his body thinks he is eating tree pollen. I don't understand why this is happening now, he has never had trouble before. Also, he ate apples last week at McDonalds, but got hives when I gave him two slices of apples at home. Now I am nervous anytime he eats fruit (his favorite food group) because I never know what will cause a reaction. I also have to carry an Epipen and Benadryl all the time in case he has a reaction. Has anyone else ever dealt with this type of allergy?

What can I do next?

Hi! I have this too. If you eat the fruit cooked it will cause no reaction. I had the reaction with apples, plums, kiwis and carrots. It changed after a few years and now I'm totally OK with raw apples and plums, but not kiwis and carrots. It seemed to improve once I got my severe pollen allergies under control with an antihistimine and nasal spray. Look up what "family" the offending fruits are in and if they're his favorites, give them to him cooked. Also, just because he has a reaction with some fruits in the "family" doesn't mean he'll have a reaction to all- it just means he might. So you can give him a little piece to rub on his lips or a little bite to see if he feels itchy to test. I also take Zyrtec daily, and am now a happy apple eater! In the meantime, applesauce is great!
Good luck,
L.

You need to be very careful now with vaccines as they can trigger even more allergies if your son is this reactive especially.

I would look into NAET treatments. The layman explanation is that they open up the 'energy' fields and pathways in the body - there is blockage that creates these reactions. All I know is it has worked for many people that I know, including my daughter and me.

BTW - stay away from McDonalds foods. I know it is enticing and 'fun' but not worth the junk that you would be putting into your body. The chicken nuggets - look on the internet for what they truly are - if I had only known :o)

Did the allergist suggest allergy shots to build up some immunity to tree pollen and or grass? It is a very long process that could take years but it might help.

I haven't dealt with this myself but I have heard how some fruits and nuts have tree proteins and this can happen (read something about it a few months ago). The problem you explain regarding the apples could be the type of apples or it could be that at home the skin was still on the apple slices but those at McDonalds are peeled. It could be they weren't washed. Hard to know for sure.

Good luck.

From what I understand it can be associated with where the apple is grown too. So your McDonalds apple could have been grown in Chile for all you know. So maybe look into this aspect....can he eat fruits from different parts of the world? This can probably be found through online research or from a GOOD allergist (not all are). you should also look into the tropical fruits such as mangoe, banana, pineapple, etc. And maybe strawberries/blueberries.
Allergies can happen at any time in a person's life. I know many adults who have recently got them-I think myself included.

Allergies are crazy this time of year. You can try to control them with natural products. When my youngest son was a baby he was sick all the time; every single month. He had ear and throat infections, allergies and if there was anything he could get he would. We were at the doctor every single month. When he was one we put him on daily suppelements; within 2 months he no longer was getting infections but he still had allergies on occassion. He still takes daily supplements but we added NutriFeron to his daily regimen and he no longer has allergies.
This may be something that you consider for your child. The products suugested to use for a five year old would be Incredivites and NutriFeron.
You can find the products at the website below. if you have infants and toddlers we also have a powder supplement for them. That is where I begin my youngest son and my older son on the incredivites.

Anyway the website is: http://choice-wellness.myshaklee.com

I hope this is helpful and if you would like any other stories of what these products have done for others I will share some with you. Blessings!

I have OAS and very severe seasonal allergies as well. Here in VA they routinely check for 42 common allergies... I am allergic to 38 of them. UGH!

OAS is tricky and really depends on what is out at the time. Google it and you can find the list of what tree/grass/weed pollens are like what fruit proteins and you can start to learn what to avoid and when based on his specific allergies. For example, peaches and birch are similar in protein structure so I react to peaches when birch pollen is high. Where the fruit is grown can make a difference, too. A locally grown apple will have the pollen from the local flora on it, so he may be reacting to the pollen on the fruit and not the fruit itself.

You also need to be sure to keep a list of what fruits he is reacting to, when, and how often. I say how often meaning "does he react every time he eats it or just some times". If it is all the time, it may be a true allergy to the food and not just OAS. Take this list with you to the allergist so they can blood test for the specific antigen and you will know if he is actually allergic to the food or if it is just OAS. I used this method and found out I am actually allergic to apples, grapes and all melon (I ended up in the hospital after two bites of watermelon at a picnic!)

Another holistic thing you can try (I have not done any of the ones from other answers) is local honey. One tablespoon per day... it will have all the local pollens in it and your body will start to build up an immunity to them. I don't have time for allergy shots, but the honey has really helped me to lessen the severity of my allergies to the point that I can now enjoy the outdoors in the spring and fall instead of being holed up in my house all day.

Good luck!

Jamie D is right on target. NAET will clear the allergies. The hives could be all sorts of things. Pesticides can trigger symptoms and so can other food sensitivities.
I have seen NAET work on all sorts of allergies. Skin allergy testing is the least effective way to diagnose allergies. Blood testing is the best.
Saying that, please consider non medicated, wholistic therapies. Especially since your son is so young. There are 2 practitioners in Northern Va.
