Bath Time for 5 Month Old!

I have a 5 month old son. He is VERY active, curious and always wanting to sit up. He cannot sit up by himself, although he tries very hard. I have a small tub I put him in for bath time with a reclining seat. He is able to use his tummy muscles to sit himself up and then bathing him is impossible! Any affordable ideas for a 'supported sitter' in the bathtub??

What can I do next?

They make little bath seats. They stick to the tub and he will be supported in the seat with his legs straight out..

I had a bath ring for my kids. It has a flat bottom with suction cups, columns and a ring that sits on top. Kind of hard to explain. I loved it! You still have to be diligent during the bath. The baby sits in the center of the ring and is supported on all sides. Look one up and see what you think good luck!

I too discovered the bath ring (but not until after my son was too big for it). My friend used it for both her boys & it worked great. The only problem is that if your bathtub has texture (non-slip) on the bottom the suction cups might not stick very well. I'm saving my bath ring for baby #2 and can't wait to use it. Good luck!

Hi L.,

We loved the Munchkin brand inflatable rubber duckie bathtub at this stage: http://www.munchkin.com/products/detail.html?pID=168

It doesn't offer support, but it has inflated sides that surround baby. He can lean against the side or sit with your help. If he tips over, he'll just bounce on the side-no hard edges. It also allows space for him to scoot around, explore and play. There's a suction cup to allow it to hang on the tub wall to dry. And you can easily reach his bottom half for washing. It only cost us around $10 a two years ago.

Best wishes

We had an inflatable duck bath tub for my kids - bought at Target - it was great for that age (and through the time that they were ready to be in the big tub). I believe Munchkin makes it. We also have laid our kids down in the tub (on a padded bathtub mat) for quick baths - if your little guy can't quite sit up by himself, this might work for you.

They used to have a "bath ring" that was made for sitting kids up and it suctioned to the bottom of the tub. I am not sure they make it any more but its worth looking into. When my son was little and still needed support to sit I would put him in it then put towels around him and then he was able to sit and play in the tub!! As he got older it was great too cause they were not slipping around in the tub! Good luck, hope this helps!!

Try one of those blow-up bathtubs (there's a cute one in the shape of a duck at Babies R Us or Target, I'm sure). They are small enough that he won't fall in and you can put it in the larger tub and he can lean against the side to sit up. But by the time you get it, he'll probably be sitting on his own, though!
