After the birth of my daughter I started taking the depo shot. I had my last shot in March of 2005. I have not been suggestful in getting pregnant. The nurse who talked me into going on it said that it would take a year to get pregnant after getting off the shot. We would really like another child.. Has anyone else taken the shot? How long did it take you to get pregnant?

What can I do next?

hi i am 21 and have been on the shot since i was 16. I absolutely love it. I don't have to worry about a period and remembering to take a pill. It only took me about 4 months after stopping mine to get pregnant. I think it all has to do with hormone levels. They told me it could take up to a year but it didn't for me. good luck and I would consider getting your hormone levels checked.

When I first got on the depo shot my doctor told me it could take about 18 mo. to conceive after your last shot. When I got off the shot my cycle regulated itself in a few months then it took about 6 mo. after my cycle returned to normal. Has your cycle been normal for awhile?
Everyone is a little different. Try to relax and it will happen.
Just a note, your don't have to let nurses or doctors talk you into anything you do not want to do.

The DEPO shot is something I believe should be taken off the market. I took a similar drug but it was in the little tubes they put in your arm. It took me about a year and a half to get pregnant. My mil took the DEPO shot and it REALLY messed her up too. She didn't want to get pregnant, of course, but they gave it to her to stop her continous period (Which I think is CRAZY). She had a hysterectomy within 3 months.
That said, if you are wanting to get pregnant, check when you are fertile (temps and all that) and then plan accordingly. If you don't get pregnant after 3 more months of this, I would go back to the doctor and be checked.

I took the depo shot starting in August of 2004 after my daughter was born. It was the worst thing I could have done. They said I might experience "slight weight gain", which in my case translated into I didn't lose any of the weight that I put on during pregnancy. The shot increased the frequency of my migraines and enhanced my mood swings. A few people thought I was manic. I went off of it in March 2006 and became pregnant in October. Mine was an ectopic pregnancy, and although I was told that there were no causes, I have read a couple of medical articles that say the Depo shot, as well as other independent factors, may cause ectopic pregnancies. My advice is to just be incredibly careful and start prenatal checkups as soon as you find out you are pregnant, when and if it happens. I wish you the best of luck!

I have been a very big fan of the depo shot. I have taken it all throughout college and it has helped me strategically plan when I would have another baby. Yes, of course there are side effects with every birth control you take but weight gain is not that big of a deal because if you have proper exercise and diet you will lose when you are finished having your baby. I just lost 30 pounds after my son and I am currently back on the depo. When I decide to have a baby I get off of the depo and start making sure I am taking my vitamins and eating healthier. I give up alcohol and it usually takes 6 months for me to conceive. The nurse was just being cautious by saying it could take up to a year. You might be having trouble concieving due to other reasons. You might be stressing out too much over the situation that your body is not ready to have another baby. You and your husband must be stress free. It will happen in due time. You might want to check and see if there are other factors that are contributing to you not having a child. Maybe get your husband checked out as well to be on the safe side. It might not be you.
I don't agree that the depo is the worst birth control out there. It is very effective. There are other birth controls that have gotten lost inside women like IUD and there are some that cause strokes heart attacts and blood clots. The pills are a hassle to take every day but some are very good and disciplined at doing that. My point is if you decide to keep taking depo after you are finished having your next baby to be then make sure you supplement your diet with calcium to offset the risk of osteroperosis.
Good Luck and take care.

I was on the depo shot for almost 2 years. When I stopped getting them it took me a 1 1/2 years to finally have a period again. After that it took another 3 or 4 months to get pregnant. I won't be going back on the shot again. It really had my body messed up.

I'm not familur with the shot, but something that helped increase my hormone levels was the Chasteberry herb. You can get it from GNC's website. It's in Fertility Blend for women. http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2134276&am... It contains the chasteberry & several other vitamins & herbs. Good luck!

Hi L.,

I know nothing of birth control because I have never been on any kind. I just wanted to give you encouragement to not give up. My husband and I went a whole year trying to conceive before we finally did and like I said, I never was on birth control. My cousin had her first baby almost 4 years ago and it was another 3 years before she was able to conceive again. As you can see from your other responses every woman reacts differently with birth control. I guess what I am trying to say is when or if it is time for you to have another child, you will. Stress doesn't help the matter either. I don't want to minimize your desire to have another child, I understand that urge and need. I would just suggest stay busy with your two children, enjoy every moment, and if you are blessed with another child, what a wonderful blessing. If you never have another child, you still have two wonderful blessings.

Saying a prayer for you...

Beth

Don't give up hope yet. I had the nora plant in my arm and it took my husband I 4 years to have our first child after I had it removed. Have your considered getting an ovulation kit? They are virtually inexpensive and it will let you know within 24-36 hours when you are most fertile. That's how we ended up pregnant with our first and second child. Give it a try!! Good luck.

I am sorry to hear that. The depo shot is the worst birth control on the market today. I took in when my son was born in 1997. I have still not been able to get pregnant.

Hi there! After I got off the Depo shot, I was put on the pill for a few months. This helped my system get back to normal, since I did not have any periods with the shot. I got pregnant fairly quickly, I just stopped the pill after about two months and we were pregnant that fast. Good luck!!!!
