ok I know a TON of you have said that taking your kids to a chiropractor has healed them of acid reflux but my Ped. is very firm about me NOT taking my 5 mo old. and yes I kjnow a lot of you are going to tell me that it is a money thing and all that but I really do trust my ped. so that is why I am having a really hard time deciding if I want to take my daughter. I really can't imagine it being any worse than what she is going through now. SHe is on prescribed special formula, she is on full does of zantac AND previcit and she still has serious problems. So my question is do you know ANYONE that has ever had a child be worse off or have something bad happen after taking them to the Chiropractor? Everytime I mention reflux every single person tells me to take her to the CHiropractor. I can't help but think that it might actually work. Really could use some more feedback on this.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

sounds like everyone has their own oppinion. I think I am going to stick it out with the gastro. since she is slowly growing out of this. My new gastro. is going to start cutting down on the meds that the other gastro. prescribed her. I think sometimes I just feel like it is never going to end but the truth is that she is near the end. My mom used to take me to a chiro. when I was a child and now I have EXTREMELY bad joints. I was throwing my back out at the age of 17 and now my hips are really messed up. Mysister STILL goes ALL the time and I constantly hear her complain about how much pain she is in. THis is why I am so skeptic about taking her. THank you for all the advise and I think I am going to trust my Ped. on this one.

I never took my child to a chiropracter because I went to one and ended up in worse pain than before. And I don't see how cracking her spine is going to help her digestion.

It's pretty common for doctors to be skeptical of Chiropractors. The choice is yours. Honestly, if you are seeking some sort of other treatment then you must not be happy with the treatment you are getting now.

Medical doctors assume that when you adjust an infant it will be with the same force as an adult, this is not true. My husband used to adjust my daughter with two fingers. It's very gentle. I would recommend finding a chiro that specializes in pediatrics though, they go through additional schooling and learn more about the development of children.

Hi M.---First, I'd like to suggest that if all these adult meds are not helping your little one, maybe reflux is NOT the issue. Docs know a lot but they don't know everything and frankly, putting little babies on meds for (supposed) reflux scares the stuffing out of me.

I am a wellness coach and I've been reading research that suggests that too little stomach acid is the problem, not too much. Adequate stomach acid is necessary for proper digestion, which is essential for proper nutrient absorption. I'm afraid we're setting up a generation of people who are going to suffer from more degenerative disease because of 'malnutrition'. Anyway, that's another subject. Is her special formula predigested? A ped I work with says that is essential. Do you nurse her at all? You can do an elimination diet and keep a food diary to see if that is bothering her.

That being said, I think chiropractic is a wonderful way to help maintain optimal health. Will it 'cure' your daughter's reflux? Only time will tell. Even if it doesn't, you can be sure that it has done some good for her overall health outside of the reflux. I see a doc who practices upper cervical...no snapping and cracking of the bones. Bottom line, it can't hurt and I recommend chiropractic care. It won't be wasted $. If I can be of any additional help, please feel free to contact me. Good luck. D.

For those who aren't aware of how chiropractic care can help with bone/nerve pain or digestive issues... here is a visual.

Your spine... it is meant to be a certain way, it is the core of your internal structure. When it is out of alignment, the muscles/ligaments/etc attached to the bony processes pull at different leverages than they should... this in turn moves your digestive, nervous and cardiac systems out of it's prior alignment.

When the spine is re-aligned... your internal organs and nerve tracks also go back into alignment (most times, sometimes if you wait too long and too much damage occurs, nothing will help).

When my infant goes in for his adjustments (which is not the same alignments adults get) he has a massive poop within 2 hours. His main issue is colic/gas and reflux. When I miss an adjustment, I absolutely feel it!!

WHY does the doctor say no?

It's SUUUUPER gentle. My son has been going since he was born. He's 4.5 now and asked today "can we go see Dr. Don this week?" He giggles during his adjustments and has never had an ear ache and has never had any tummy issues. In fact adjustments HELP babies stay regular.

Just think about this. Your body goes thru MAJOR stress during the birthing process. Think about what the BABY has to literally go thru. Babies get pretty swished around during the process and a chiro can REALLY help get the baby back in alingement.

RUN don't walk. You will thank the chiro a million times for years to come.

Sorry, I know how you moms feel about Chiros, but I don't trust them, I even once received a private message from a wife of a pediatric surgeon, telling me how many cases her husband gets from children being messed up by Chiros....I'm not saying all of them are quacks, but I just don't buy it and yes I have been to a bunch, and yes I have come out once crying ,hardly able to move.I would never bring a child to one EVER!

My first born had the severe acid reflux, so I totally understand what you're going through. After she had her upper GI at only 13 days old and we saw the severity of the reflux on the screen right there in front of our eyes, she was sent to a gastroenerologist at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. That Dr. was able to heal her completely raw esophagus with a combination of meds and also put her on a very gentle formula with one TABLESPOON per ounce rice cereal mixed in................yes, an entire tablespoon of rice cereal PER ounce. It was super thick and she showed us how to fix the nipples, so she could drink it. She also said the reflux would peak at 6mths of age and then get better and better until it ultimately disappeared. She said once she began the transition to spoon feeding cereals and then baby food.....that the reflux would lessen. Sure enough, it was like clockwork. After her esophagus healed, she would no longer scream when she would spit up. That alone was my saving grace. I could deal with the tons and tons and tons of spit up as long as my baby smiled after she did it. I'm sure you understand exactly what I'm saying. The pain is what did us in. And sure enough, we started spoon feeding her cereal at 5mths old and then introduced baby food at 6mths old. The reflux was non-existent before her 1st bday. That Dr. knew exactly what she was doing, which is why she is at Vanderbilt, I guess. ;0) I too heard about the chiropractor and I can tell you that if my baby was still in pain w/ that reflux, I would've eventually taken her. But, your baby is 5mths old.........meaning she is very close to starting the transition to solids. I bet the reflux will diminish for you as well once that happens. I don't have an answer for you about the chiropractor..........that is totally up to you. I just wanted you to know that you are very very close to the light at the end of the tunnel as far as the loads of spit up and millions of changes of clothes for the both of you per day! LOL Once she is spoon feeding and eating more and more solids, that reflux will get better. I bet you'll stop the meds soon after as well. =0) Good luck with your decision!

I would listen to the ped. They know what they are talking about. MY daughter had reflux and our ped told me it was colic. I told her I do not believe in colic, that she had to be hurting and we put her on reflux med and she was better!

Go! My kids have been adjusted since birth. Medical doctors don't learn about vertebral subluxation, just as chiros don't learn about medications. Plain and simple, most forms of natural/alternative health are just not familiar to mds! Adults hurt worse after starting chiropractic because the subluxation has gone uncorrected for so long that it requires retraining. It works because the nervous system is inside the spinal cord, and controls all bodily function. Like cutting a telephone wire, interference doesn't allow the body to get the brains messages on how to work properly.

In my opinion the reason you hear regular chiropractic patients complain about pain is because they're aware and in tune with their bodies and fix what's wrong rather than ignore it or hope it goes away before it causes further damage..just my observation!
