Developed Asthma Due to Pregnancy

I also developed asthma in my third trimester with my first child. She's now thirteen and I still have the asthma. I remember my Dr's telling me then, that it was possible for it to go away after she was born, but in my case it didn't. I wouldn't be too concerned about any effects on your baby, there are so many medications out there with little or no effect on your baby. I was on several with my second child and there wasn't any problems. Talk to your doctor about your worries and congrats. Hope this helps.

In my last 2 or 3 pregnancies, I had bronchitis. This last one sent me to the ER with something like an asthma attack...I was wheezing and struggling to breathe. The ER doctor was surprised to hear that I did not have a history of asthma but did say that pregnancies can bring this on for some reason. He gave me a breathing treatment and sent me home with an inhaler and small amount of steroid. I do tend to get bronchitis now in the winter...but my girls have both been fine.

I always had minor asthma- In the past and now my inhalor maybe once or twice a year. When I was pregnant I had to use it once a week. It was so hard to breathe sometimes.

I've had asthma since I was 12 and with both of my pregnancies it has gotten worse during pregnancy. I'd gone 4 years without using my albuterol inhaler (didn't even have one on hand!) before I got pregnant with my daughter. I ended up using it almost every day through my first trimester with her. The docs said to be aware, take meds as needed an not be concerned about that, and it shouldn't affect the pregnancy if you keep it in control. My daughter has never had any lung issues to date - she is very healthy. I'm pregnant with my second and while my asthma has been much mroe under control this time (different seasons, I think), I've still had to take meds occasionally.

I really wouldn't worry about effects on your child, as long as you keep yourself healthy and under control.

YEP. I happend to me. I never did either but as soon as I was pregnant my youngest, I had pregnancy induced asthsma. It did not get better in my case. I have to carry an inhaler with me. I don't use it unless it gets bad. But, it isn't really that horrible accept in the winter time. Sorry I couldn't give you more reassurance.

Me too. I was diagnosed about a month ago and luckily have only had a few bad attacks where I have had to use the inhaler. I was diagnosed at about 8 weeks and am 12 weeks along now.

My dr. equated it to being like exercise-induced asthma. I guess it has something to do with your body working harder and pumping more blood (you get 50% more blood when pregnant!) They didn't tell me if it would go away or not, but told me the Albuterol inhaler and Singulair would not harm the baby.

Sorry this is happening. It is really awful, I know :(

You may have had mild asthma and just never knew it. Usually once it comes on fully though, it doesn't go away. That is what my pulmonary doc said. I developed asthma a couple years ago when plumbing was fixed in my house. The sealant they used triggered it. Actually it burned my lungs! Nice, eh? Anyways, my last pregnancy I had to use a nebulizer it got so bad! I had my daughter last August. Springtime is the worst for asthmatics! All I can say is hang in there and stay inside this summer. It may get worse! Utilize A/C! LOL None of the medication will harm the baby either! Good luck and don't stress. That could make it worse to!

I have terrible allergies and asthma as well. I have never heard of asthma induced by pregnancy. Odd. I felt like I had smoked for 30 years when I was pregnant and at first thought it was my asthma acting up. Many become short of breath due to bambino pushing up on your lungs. Is should have no bearing on the health of your baby but it will be something that you'll want to keep a look out for in your child as both get older. Take care.

I developed terrible allergy induced asthma issues while pregnant with my second child. I saw an allergist at Dr. Ozog and Assoc. and she said that it is not uncommon that this happen during pregnancy. After my son was born...the symptoms subsided.
