Hi,

We are going to be going out of town for a few days in a couple weeks. Normally, I have a friend keep our golden retriever but it won't work out this time. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good, afforable dog kennel? Some place where the dogs can run around a lot. He is VERY high energy and loves to play with other dogs (people too for that matter). We haven't boarded him since he was a puppy and it wasn't a good experience. We live about 104th and Federal, anything nearby would be great! Thanks!!

What can I do next?

I second Cottonwood Kennels. A bit far but well worth it. You even get a dozen fresh farm eggs when you pick up!

Camp Bow Wow is great I have used them a couple of times. My dog trainer also does boarding and they get great personal care and socialization. Her website is www.baddogswelcome.com, her name is Rita. She has done a great job training our dogs and I trust her with all my kids - with and without fur!

try all brick kennels....we used them over the summer and our dog seemed happy. They charged us $12.50 per day (we have a 50lb austrailian shepard mix). I beleive they are located in Northglenn.

Cottonwood kennels in the Boulder area -- a little of a drive, but the dogs get amazing care and you can bring in your own food and treats! But you don't have to and they do give everyone a treat at night. Depending on the weather, they take the dogs outside to play with other dogs 2 or 3 times a day and give them exercise. My dog hates going to the kennel, but doesn't seem to mind this place. They are pretty reasonably priced for what they offer.

They do have a website.

You may want to check out Pete & Mac's on about 112th and Washington in Northglenn. We thought it was comparable in price and a great little resort for the dogs. You can go and they give you a tour of the whole facility too.

Try Colorado Dog Academy at 120 and Sheridan. It is noisy there which is my main problem with the, all these dogs barking like mad all night. There are vets that do it too if you have a vet close by you use. Camp Bow Wow on 287 does it as well. He will have to have a kennel cough shot and has to be done a few weeks prior to boarding too, for his protection! :) My favorite all time boarding was Cottonwood Kennels but it is a ways a way.

Playful Pooch is on Holly/40th right off of 70 across from the District 2 police station. Our dog always liked it there!

I use Pete and Mac's around 114th and Washington and have heard that there is a Petsmart in the area which provided great boarding facilities. You can opt to have your pup in daycare all day at extra expense and he will be too tired to worry about where you are.
Another option might be a house sitter. They cost about the same as a kennel but your friend is in his familiar surroundings. They will walk him often but he spends most of the day home alone. However, this can sometimes be a better alternative for a pup who has never stayed in a noisy, busy, kennel which doesn't have a homey atmosphere.
Also, if and when you do choose a kennel, you might consider leaving your boy there for a day of daycare before you leave him for an extended stay. That way he can get used to the surroundings and make new friends, yet still see you that night. It makes for a better transition. We always recommended that approach for our new visitors at the kennel I used to work at.
And finally, be sure to go to the kennel(s) you have picked out and get a tour of the facilities (without your buddy). If they don't give tours, DON'T USE THEM! Any reputable kennel should allow a tour AT ANY TIME so that you can see how clean their facilities are, etc.

Good luck and have a great trip!

I know it might be drive for you. My sister works at Club Pet in Parker. She has a ton of experience with Goldens and is a great groomer as well. Give her a call ###-###-#### to make a reservation. They are located 4 miles east of Parker Road on Main Street. Her name is Roz Lamont. Hope this helps. M.
