Dry Scalp

Hi All! I'm a new member and have never posted a question before, but
thought maybe someone out there could help.

My 4 1/2 yr old daughter just recovered from a case of cellulitis (skin
infection caused by a bacterial infection in the blood). It caused
her scalp and forhead to swell and become VERY red. After the IV
antibiotics were over and the swelling went down, her forhead became very dry
and peely. I put lotion for very dry skin on it, and it cleared up.

So here's my question... her scalp is now really dry and flaky. I
already put a detangler on it when I wash it so I can get a comb through,
and that tends to make her hair look greasy faster. I can't slather her
head with lotion, and I'm afraid of putting on heavy-duty conditioner
because it's her head that's effected, not her hair. Should I just let
it take its course? Any home remedies? Any suggestions would be
great!! Thanks!! -- E.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

To my new friends - Thank you so much for all your suggestions and advice!! I had no idea you all were "out there"!

We visted my daughter's PCP today as a follow-up to her hospital stay. She told us that because Emma's dry scalp was caused by cellulitis (skin infection), we just had to let the flakiness run its course. It's probably going to take a week or 2 before it clears up. I told her about all of your suggestions, and she said that they sounded great for "regular dry scalp", but wouldn't have the same effect on Emma at this time.

Thank you, again, for being there for me! I love that I'm not alone!!!! :-)

My daughter has had this problem since infancy and she's now 7. We have prescription shampoo but most recommended is good ol' Selson Blue. Also recommend putting on some baby oil and comb out with fine tooth comb to loosten up the scales and then wash out. It takes a few washings to get the oil out but her scalp will look good as new.

My daughter was having a very hard time with dry scalp. The girl who cuts her hair told us to get a Heads and Shoulders...so I bought her the 2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner. I have her put it on at the beginning of her shower and rub it in her scalp real good and leave it on until she is done washing her body and everything else. It has not totall gone away but has made a drastic difference!

Maybe try rubbing baby oil in her hair to moisten the skin then use a fine comb and brush it out. Then just wash her hair with regular shampoo and conditioner. I tried it when my daughter had cradle cap and it worked great.

Tea Tree oil shampoo and conditioner work well for dandruff and the like, it can be found at most health food stores... A question, does it look like cradle cap or dandruff. Cradle cap, says my childrens hair dresser... is actually a oil buildup though it looks kindof scabby... She suggested dawn dish soap and it worked with a fine tooth comb to pull it out. ps, my son didn't get the "cradle cap" until 2 or 3 years old. hope you find some help. R.

I have a business with skin care products (Arbonne), and I would recommend 2 of our products.

1. Arbonne's Baby Care Body Oil. You can apply a small amount to her scalp and let her sleep with it in, then wash it in the morning if it looks oily. Several Pediatricians have used this for cradle cap on babies.

2. Intelligence Skin Conditioning Oil. I use this for my dry cuticles, but clients of mine use it as a hot oil treatment for their hair. Again, apply a small amount to her scalp. It absorbs into the skin.

Please email me at ____@____.com if I can be of help.

tea tree shammpoo and conditioner....I have MANY friends in the hair nail industry and this is what they all say! Like all hair products...IF you get them in your eyes they do irriatate!!!!!!!, even Johnsons baby shampoo has bothered me and my girls.Use a washcloth to cover her eyes while you shampoo or rinse. Regular conditioners are not designed to aid in scalp issues.

Hello, E.! Welcome! I am fairly new myself!

Here's a home remedy I just learned about.....banana peel. Supposedly it helps with severe dryness. Eat a banana and rub the inside of the peel over affected area. I hear it works wonders, bur I have not tried it. My stepdad said it relieves excema (sp?) in as little as three days. Hope that helps!!

I think the olive oil solution sounds the best... two votes for it.

You might also talk with the Dr. about using a hydrocortizone cream like Aveeno makes. We love it for skin irritations on my 2yr son with allergies. (and I use it post-facial waxing)

Hope you find a solution that works for you!

You might want to treat it like you would cradle cap. Put some mineral or baby oil on her scalp and rub it in before bath time. Then you might have to shampoo a couple of times. My son has what looks like cradle cap and he is 8. This is just something we have to do every few months.

When my daughter gets a dry and flaky scalp I usually put some baby oil on her scalp at night and the next day wash her hair. It does make her hair very oily but seems to do the trick for us; plus I also use Suave kids conditioner everytime i wash her hair and let it set for a few minutes which helps her scalp a little too. The Suave kids is tear free so you don't have to worry about getting it in her eyes like the tea tree products someone recommended to you-I have used and it will irriate your eyes badly.

Hi E.

I'm an esthetician and it sounds like she has severe dermetitis. There is a product that you can get at a hair salon called instacure by matrix. It has a protein in it that is good for dry hair, but it also helps with dry scalp. I use it when I need it in the winter. You might check with a hair stylist first to make sure it's ok on childrens heads, but it has worked for me and many other people I have recommended it for. You spray it all over the head and massage it in to the scalp. Hope this helps!!

Try using a shampoo with Zinc in it. My dermitologist rec. it to me for my son and it's great! Just make sure that you keep it out of the eyes since it's not a Johnson's or tear free.

Try Redkin's dandruff/dry scalp formula shampoo and conditioner. You can pick it up at any Beauty Brands store. It is a white bottle shaped like a half circle with black or gray writing on it. It has zinc in it. Good luck!

I have been told to use vinegar after washing your hair to put it in let it soak, but my son who is 4 may not approve so I use lot's of conditioner and let him play in tub for a while while it soaks in it helps, also Olive oil too,it doesn't have to be expensive use as a conditioner then wrap the head with a towel for a while then rinse in the shower. With either method you choose be sure to penatrate the scalp not just the hair.

This is what they tell you to try on infants with very dry scalps so maybe it will help your daughter as well. When she is in the tub, take a baby hair brush (one with very soft bristles) and put a few drops of babyoil on it. Gently massage the baby oil over her scalp with the brush for a few minutes. You may also want to stick with baby shampoo and conditioner right now as they are the least harshest.

Hi E.. I recently visited with a beautician friend concerning my nephew who has dry scalp issues. Her suggestion was to use an old toothbrush with baby oil. I tried it on him when he stayed with us and it did moisten the scalp, as well as massage the area. As a boy, he has very short hair, so this might not work for you, but I thought I'd pass along the info. Best of luck! N.

You can use a small amount of anti-dandruff shampoo on her head. It should clear it right up. You can also put some baby oil on it. It obviously will make her hair really greasy, but it will stop her scalp from being dry.

E.,

I had cellulitis also. Horrible thing to have. Hopefully she wasn't in too much pain. Poor baby!!

Aveda sells a product that goes on the scalp. You can go into any place that sells it and tell them that you want the stuff for the scalp. Sorry, I don't remember the name. It is in a brown glass bottle that is about medium size. I put it on before I take a shower or at night. Not too greasy. I know people can put it on the scalp and let it dry and then style. I think it is about $10 - $12.

Eventually, it will go away, it just takes time. I hope she feels better.

Hi E.! I'm so sorry to hear your daughter has been having such a hard time. When my daughter was little she had a horrible case of cradle cap, which is probably somewhat similar to what you are dealing with. At first I thought the answer was to moisturize, but later found out from others that it was better to remove the dead skin. I used a shampoo called California Baby on her and it loosened up all of that dead/dry skin really quickly. I purchased it at a health store, but I've also seen it at Target. It's a little pricey (about $10 a bottle) but I found it well worth it.

Hello E., straight beer has helped several people with dry scalps, my sister in law swears by a beer shampoo she buys, which I don't know the name of. It does not make her stink like beer, on the contrary, her hair smells wonderful. I was helped by a commercial tar shampoo and also by a coconut shampoo from The Body Shop. Later was diagnosed with psoriasis, got medication for it for my scalp, it later occured in my ears and I have been helped by the Renew lotion from The Melaleuca company. If your daughter's symptoms occur other places on her body and seem to bother her a lot, consider taking her to naturopathic doctor, dermatologist or even a hairdresser. I was wrongly diagnosed by the doctor and it was my hairdresser who said that it was psoriasis, and she was right. In general , go natural to the extent that you can, perfumed stuff can irritate more. Linn

You can try sulfer 8 OR pink oil moist. You can usually find them at any drug store, dollar store or beauty supply. I know we have a extra emollient cream (Mary Kay) that works VERY good on dry skin, it might not hurt to try it on the head but I can call our dermotologist at Mary Kay & see what they think or if they may rec something else. Let me know if your interested or you can try those other two I listed first, just make sure you oil & massage her scalp & NOT grease her hair. Keep me posted goodluck & God Bless!
