Ducts: Clean or Replace?

Anyone out there ever had all their ductwork replaced? We recently had ducts "cleaned" (dusted) and they recommended having them thoroughly cleaned to get all the gunk (including mold) out of ducts and the estimate was almost $3000 with a 10 year guarantee. This is a 20 year old house that we plan on staying in for many many years. It made me wonder how much it would cost to replace the ductwork instead of cleaning it all. Does anyone have even a ballpark idea?
Additional info: we had the initial "cleaning" because two of the kids and I had started getting a horrible cough, which I still have, and has turned into bronchitis and pneumonia. So yes, this is important to me as it is a health issue. The company that did the dusting took pictures and explained very thoroughly so it's not that I think they're scamming me. I do intend to get a second, possibly third estimate. Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The company is paradise air. I will be getting several second opinions on the cleaning. Thanks.

Hi,
May I suggest you get a second opinion? Or at least check this business with your Attorney General's Office for complaints. You could even Google them. There are duct cleaning scams. Consumer Reports suggests that most folks never even need their ducts cleaned.
All my best.

I would get another estimate on the cleaning. When we got a new furnace, they did it for free. It really did clean them out good.

We had our ducts cleaned a few years ago by a very reputable BBB company and it cost us upwards of $2,500. We did it because our children were continually getting sick and so was I. Once we had them cleaned, the sicknesses ceased.
I would venture that replacing all ductwork would cost far more then a cleaning. Think of all the work involved in removing the ducts and then the cost of replacing...well over $10 grand would be my guess. Think about when people get central air put in a home that doesn't already have it...usually costs about $20,000 or so.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised if replacing the duct was completely affordable. And also I bet it is much more insulated than it was years ago so I would think the air would come out cooler/warmer. So you might save on your electric bill since the unit would run less.
I love my AC guy, always pleasant and affordable.
It is Sykora's Air Conditioning ###-###-####

We had a lot replaced ( revamped) when we ripped out and upgraded our overall heating and air system and furnaces. We spent in the $20,000 range for all the upgrades and it was worth it as far as utility bills and our allergies.

We opted for gas logs vs wood burning due to allergies... Love it

We also take the Costco ( Kirkland) brand of the 24 hr Zyrtec for over a year faithfully and since we've done that. NO sinus infections, colds, rtc

Good luck

Hey A.!

Would you mind sharing the company name who gave you the estimate? I've been concerned about mold in our ductwork. At the end of the summer, our AC smells so musty...

God's Grace to You,

Lisa :)
