Hi,
My son was seen for an ear ache on Tuesday. Diagnosed with an ear infection.Started antibiotics Tuesday night, still complaining of ear pain and loss of hearing as of today. Last night he had a little bit of BRIGHT YELLOW DISCHARGE coming out of that ear when laying down. I called the Dr yesterday and told him my son did not seem any better and he has had 4 doeses of the medicine as of mid day yesterday. I was told to give it until Monday. I have always seen improvement after about three does of antibiotics and I have never seen dicharge coming from the ears either especially after starting the medication. Any moms experience this before??
My son can push on the front of the ear and you can hear the swuishing sound from the fluid in the ear. (Another note)
Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Call them and tell them you believe he has a ruptured ear drum. I had one as a kid and, to be honest, it felt better as there wasn't as much pressure, however there's an open spot for even more infection to get in.....he needs some drops asap to help it heal.

With the discharge, you have to let the doctor know. If he won't take you then call another pediatrician and keep calling them until one will take your son to treat him today.

Did you mention the drainage to the doctor?

He needs to be seen again. Clear drainage is usually an indication of rupture.

I had drainage with a recent infection and it turns out I had a perforated eardrum.

Poor baby!

The goo has to go somewhere momma. If it wasn't coming out his ears it would be coming out his nose or down his throat.

I would just keep him on the antibiotics until Monday OR if you trust yourself take him to the ER or an Urgent Care clinic.

There are some antibiotics that just do not work for me. I can take a Z-pac and then go back to the doc the next week and ask them for a real antibiotic. That's supposed to be one of the best ones out there but it's like taking nothing for me.

I can take some other kind and within a few hours I am feeling so much better.

Agree with the others -- if you are seeing discharge there is a bigger issue -- probably a perforated eardrum. My son had many ear infections before he got tubes in his ears. No discharge before the tubes. WIth the tubes, I can definitely see discharge at the start of an infection.

I would call the doc back and tell her about the drainage. If she can't get back to you, head to urgent care so they can take a peek.

Good luck!

Discharge indicates ear drum rupture, which is where the pain is coming from. I've had ruptures before with ear infections, and it does cause hearing loss and lots of pain. They should have given him ear drops for the pain. Call them and see if they will call in ear drops, if not, use warm compresses on his ear, it will really help. Give the antibiotics a couple more days to work, just manage the pain until then. Poor guy!
