Good Lip Balms?

My kindergartener has horribly chapped lips as well as the area all around his mouth. We have been putting Avon kids stuff on him, but I think he likes the flavor and licks at it, totally defeating the purpose. I was wondering what brands of lip balm or other treatment you Moms would recommend. His face looks so sore!

What can I do next?

Avon intensive therapy lip balm. Works the best and not as tasty as the cherry and other delicious flavors.
It is kind of plain but works wonderfully!

I use aquaphor for my daughter and I for chapped lips and really dry skin. You can go to the travel size isle and get it in a small tube to try. It says it is for dry chapped skin. It is a white tube with a blue top. I love it and bought a big one because I use it so much. Hope that helps!

Hi E....
The flavored chapsticks and lip glosses are designed to do that for everyone to keep buying them because they taste so good. My girls are constantly wanting chapsticks. Because I don't see no point in having to pay for them because they just get used up so fast...was I searched online how to make your own...and I found out the best thing is to use was:......Tada......Vaseline!! Did you know that's all chapstick is made of?? Than you just add your own flavoring if you want...add a little bit of peppermint extract with a dab of cocoa baking chocolate...mix and you have hot chocolate with a candycane! If you don't want him licking his lips,I'd just leave it plain jane! It works and its cheap..you probably only have to buy it once a year if that's all you use it on. My girls are complaining of dry skin...and lotion either burns their skin or just ain't working...we rub vaseline on their face, hands, arms and legs...take a washcloth...and rub in like a deep rub...a few days later..skin ain't dry as bad and don't hurt...so than you can start using lotion once again. Dry cracked feet...rub vaseline on them until it isn't greasy any longer...put socks on..and your all taken care of. Good Luck!

The best thing I have ever used for severly chapped lips is a product by Mary Kay called Extra Emollient Night Cream. It's pink and very emollient which means it sort of sticks to the skin better. Also, it's very safe so if he does lick it off, it won't hurt him. It's best to apply it right after a bath or shower...just blot dry his mouth area and apply the cream. Rub it in and it will sort of seal in the moisture.

I do sell Mary Kay if you need some. I have tried other over the counter stuff and it just doesn't work. Hope this helps!!!

Burt's Bees lip balm is great. Our whole family uses it. It doesn't have much of a flavor, which may prevent your son from licking it off. The ingredients are all natural, and the peppermint oil used in it is very soothing. For summer time, they have a sunscreen variety that also works, but for the winter months, we always just use the standard variety.

Carmex. My sons lip was completely cracked and bleeding and the carmex healed it within 2 days. They make a stick version of it now so that it's easier and a lot less messy to apply. It's cherry flavored so you may still have the same issue, but it really worked.

My mother gave him a stick and told him to only use it when he needed it (he's 6 years old). She told him to keep it in his pocket and to not let anyone else use it that it was only his. It worked like a charm until his 3 year old sister got to it and lost the cap.

Good luck

Hi E.~

I have been dealing with the same issue with my 8 year old. All of a sudden his lips got REALLY bad, all around. I work with a wellness company from home and used one of their products since Saturday and his lips are almost completely healed. It's amazing. My website is www.KidsNeedMomHome.com if you'd like to log on and fill out the "get info" form (it will only send your info directly to me). I can then contact you and let you know how you can shop with this company AND work from home (if you want). NO LARGE INVESTMENT! PROMISE! I know there are scams....found plenty myself before finding this company. I've been working from home with them now for almost 2 years.

I'm a mom of 4 and love being home!

I absolutely love BeautiControl products and their lip balm is a great product for the whole family. It is rich in Vitamin C and wheat germ oil which can be very healing. Many lip products contain alcohol and petroleum which actualy dry your lips out so you have to keep using them. Let me know if interested in trying the product and I'll connect you with the consultant.

My family and friends swear by the Arbonne Lip Balm. The reason that the others don't work is the ingredient petrolatum. The more you use it, the more you need it, the more you buy it, the more they make money! Petroleum products are equal to putting cellophane on your skin. Your skin can't breathe or take in any moisture. Also, any animial by-products do the same harm. They are in most everything because they are inexpensive and readily available. Shoot me an email and I'll get you a link to get it online at wholesale. ____@____.com. Blessings! I know how painful those chapped lip stings can be for you and your kids. It breaks my heart to hear them cry in pain!

A&D or Aquaphor are the 2 things I use when my kids get chapped. It isn't flavored so they aren't keeping it irritated by licking it off, and if they really fight you with it you can always sneak in and put it on them after they fall asleep. This year I have caught them at the door before they go to the bus stop and do an assembly line of rubbing it around there mouths. It seems to be an extremely dry year, but seems to clear it up faster than chapsticks. Plus if their lips are cracking it relieves that and doesn't burn.

The best lip balm I have found (did a lot of research last winter) is Aveeno intense relief medicated therapy. The key ingredient, petrolatum, is what the pharmacist told me will clear up chapped lips. It burns slightly when you put it on, but I have used it on myself and my 7 year old son with great results. Lately, I've only been able to find it at Drug Mart.

Regular chapstick may work, or you can try Blistex. As sore as his mouth is I would used the stick and not the kind that is in a squeeze tube because when your lips are chapped real bad the kind in the tube burns like crazy. It is medicated that is why it burns. The stick type doesn't burn like that. Also, there is a roll on type of Blistex that works good and doesn't burn either.

Blistex is the best. I have suffered all my life and now my kids do. I've tried everything OTC and this is the best. At night when it is bad I put a 1% cortizone cream around the mouth but not on the lips and tell him not to lick(I'm sure he accidently has). This works the best and I will add a little Benadryl when it is real bad (he has chapped around mouth and on mouth). I think some of it is caused by allergies so that is why I add that but only hwne it is real bad. I even will use a little VICKS vapor rub and put it on my own lips when they feel tender and it always soothes my lips.

I use Mary Kay's "extra emollient night cream"....I've had it for years...use it for everything from open sores, chapped lips, dry skin on knees and elbows, etc.

It's fairly cheap and will last forever......

I stay away from products with menthol or anything else like that in them (blistex, etc.) they dry out lips too.

If that doesn't work, take him to pediatrician who can prescribed something.

We use Johnson & Johnson's Soothing Naturals. Its usually in the baby products section (its in a wide tube in a pale green color) of the store and is also wonderful for chapped cheeks or other skin that is wind or sunburned. It is tasteless and is not waxy or tingling for babies and small children to be annoyed by the feel. I even put it on the tops of my own hands when they are really dry.

You want to use a lip balm without the parabens in it. Arbonne has a great botanically based lip balm and a lip ointment. We use both in our house. Regular lip balms just work temporarily & cause you to keep using them, never really getting any relief.

Hi! My 6 year old always is having dry chapped lips and sometimes cracks in the corners of his mouth. ouch. (i suspect eczema (sp?) could be to blame.) Anyway, his favorite (it has a very lite fragrance that he likes) and mine is the Johnson's Soothing Naturals that a previous poster mentioned in the lite green dispenser. I found it in Target in the baby section.

Second favorite is the Chap Stick that says cocoa butter in the name. Sorry our one stick has gone missing this morning so I can't tell you the actual name! It has staying power, isn't waxey, and doesn't burn his lips like some others when they are really chapped.

Hope that helps! Oh, and I ALWAYS apply one of the above right before bed so those lippys have some healing time during the nite! :)

My first grader was having the same problem...we went with Burt's Bees - the honey one. She doesn't like mint. It doesn't have a lot of flavor so it doesn't encourage licking and it stays on well.
