Great Potty Training Weekend--- Now Having Trouble with School

We used the Julie Fellom's diaper free toddlers method (also called the “Potty Training in Three Days or less method) last weekend and it was fantastic!! What a great method and completely effective and easy to do.

My problem is that day care won’t cooperate with the “no underwear” part of the method. I completely buy into the concept that he needs to be in just loose fitting shorts for several weeks so that nothing feels like a diaper, but the school does not. Has anyone else used this method and had trouble getting their child care provider to comply with the follow-through? Has anyone tried using boxers under pants/shorts with this method?

So annoyed that we had a great, successful, empowering “Potty Long Weekend” and are now being set back by school.

PS--- he hasn’t had a SINGLE accident since we took the diaper off on Friday.

What can I do next?

Assuming your daycare has multiple kids to keep track of, I can understand they would be reluctant to face the possibility of multiple accidents during the day. A plan like this would best be discussed with the preschool ahead of time, instead of expecting them to "comply" with a plan that they had no say in determining.

I do know (now and in the past) at least a few families who proceeded with various potty-training strategies just on evenings and weekends. The kids seemed to do pretty well with it. As the new habits took hold, their motivation grew, and they were able to translate their successes to the daycare schedule.

Sorry, but there's no way you should be expecting the school to go along with the no underwear part of the method. Just put him in loose-fitting underwear or boxers under his shorts and pants, neither feels like diapers.

I don't understand why the daycare won't go along with it, we used a very similar method and our daycare had no problem at all. I don't see what the difference would be if you use boxers, so that sounds like a good plan to me. Congrats on a successful weekend!

My daycare went completely opposite me in potty training and insisted I put a pull up on my son for months, and lied about him having accidents. I would put loose fitting boxers on him so it is like he is in doubled up loose fitting shorts.

Would boxer shorts work? I don't see why daycare should care if they wear briefs or boxers. I also don't see why they should care if he wears underwear or not. Our daycare was thrilled with the kids who trained quickly and early at home. It seemed like a lot more work for them to teach the threes in diapers to potty than to just take the group of trained kids to the bathroom.

I don't think underwear would set him back if he understands and has had no accidents since the weekend. We trained all ours at 2 1/2 and used real underwear instead of pull ups because they hate going in the real underwear and it worked great. The boxer idea is worth a try. I wouldn't expect the school to deal with no underwear.
