It is normal to lose hair after giving birth or when you finish breastfeeding, but if you feel it is excessive, you can see a dermatologist, that's they type of doctor who deals with hair loss.

Hi R.,
Postpartum hairless is totally normal and I'm sure that's all this is. If it continues, thought, you should go and see a dermatologist because there is a lot you can do.

I wanted to write to you about my own hair loss, also, because even though our cases are totally different, I have pound a way to look beyond the hair and find happiness.

I have Androgenetic Alopecia (basically, male-type balding) and have gone through the intense stress and self-esteem crash that comes with losing hair. Please read about my take on it - I really believe it will help you through this from a psychological standpoint.

It is postpartum hair loss. It is completely normal and common. It starts around 3-4 months after having a baby and is at its worst for another 3-4 months. Then the hair loss will slow down and your hair will start growing back in.

When you child is one year old, your hair will have stopped falling out and you will notice the new growth.

Mine was really terrible with all three of my kids. I got kind of male pattern baldness around my hairline, as well as my hair thinning all over in general. But it grew back each time. It got pretty thin and I had to cut it short after each baby, but I never went bald. You won't go bald.
Don't worry.

Post partum hair loss is common, but:

"If the hair loss doesn't seem to be slowing and you're still losing lots of hair six or so months after delivery, check in with a dermatologist or your healthcare provider. It may be a sign that you're low on iron, which is not entirely uncommon for new moms."

Hi R..

I would definitely talk to your doctor. I had a similar issue after having my kids and it turned out that I was having some problems with my thyroid. It would be worth talking to your doc to find out what they can do to help.

Good luck...

Yup, my hair did this with my first and is doing it again with my second. It's one of those things they don't warn you about when you have a baby. It's actually kind of common. It will come back, it may be a little thinner then it was before baby, but it will grow back.

Also how often do you manage to wash your hairr? I know with a new baby I get to shower/wash my hair very rarely. I usually only do a quick "bird bath" with a wash cloth during the week and wash my hair on the weekends. I find that going so far between hair washes can make the loose hair "build up" so when I do wash it's a lot more then if I were washing every other day like I used to. If you wash your hair often and are still loosing a good bit each time I would suggest seeing someone. But if you're like me and manage to wash the hair only on weekends, then brushing in between can lessen the amount you loose in the shower. It's less frightening to have brushed the loose hairs out through out the week then to have them "collect" and have a handful when I finally wash my hair.

Good luck.

I had this problem due to stress. I bought Inositol (sp) from GNC. Within 30 days I began to see hair growth. It's about 10.00/bottle and I have a girfriend at church who is using it now. The sales lady tried to sell me something else to go along with it but it wasn't necessary for me. Inositol worked fast and alone. I never bought a second bottle.

Referring to Michelle L. I also was diagnosed with the autoimmune alopecia. I had a spot go completely bald. Thankfully steroid shots helped, but I did read on the Alopecia.org website that this can also occur after having a baby. More than postpardum hair loss.
talk to your doctor, and even a dermatologist to rule out any other issues.

R.:
So sorry to hear of your hair loss. Please google alopecia (not sure of the spelling) it is an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss. After reading about it, talk to your doctor about it and see if it could be that. Good luck and prayers for you.

I had it for a long time connected to thyroid issues as well as post partum, and I freaked out too. I reversed it without using hormones but by using safe supplementation formulated by scientists with a background in making the premier infant formulas - so they know about the higher standards used in infant nutrition than are required in adult nutrition. Safe for pregnancy moms and nursing moms, safe for babies. I rarely clean my brush or my shower drain now and my hairdresser says my hair is more abundant than ever.
