I am 8 weeks pregnant and am extremely nauseous most of the time. It's affecting my whole day. Does anyone have anything that really worked for them? Also, indigestion and constipation?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your support. Since I am not puking, I can't go on Zofran, but I have learned to manage it. Sonic ice is my best friend with rootbeer or caff free coke. I can't stand tums, but sometimes it's necessary. Caff free tea with lime seems to help too or just the lime dependent on the mood.

12 weeks and counting and we go in for tests today. We should know the sex by the end of the day. We are so excited. Again, thank you all for your support and advice.

Anything with ginger in it helped with my son. I drank ginger-ale, used ginger lotions, and had snacks and such with ginger. It helped. Good luck :)

I never really had morning sickness but if I was ever sick to my stomach I was told to suck on a lemon. I don't know if it was a coincedence or if the lemon really works but I seemed to start feeling better after I tried the lemon.

Congratulations on the baby. I am also pregnant and am expecting to deliver sometime in the next 3 weeks. Good Luck!!

I am in the same boat as you right now with my second child! I agree with the ideas about keeping something in your stomach all the time. That has helped me, little snacks here and there. Someone mentioned to me the other day trying ginger snap cookies, b/c of the ginger and it was something solid to eat (haven't made it to the store to try it yet but I will!) I also heard to not drink plain water if you are hungry or nauseous b/c it will make your tummy more upset...drink your water with the food or after. I love tums (ate them every night with first kid...the one that gave me no sickness I might add!) For constipation, fruit works best for me (apples, applesauce, prunes). I am not much of a medicine taker so I haven't tried the Zofran yet, but I do have an emergency prescription ready to fill if it gets too bad! Good luck, you're not alone!

I also reccommend Zofran. I began getting morning sickness at 8 weeks too. It didn't end for about 12 more weeks. My prescription was NOT as expensive as some of the others. Mine was probable 30 bucks or so, and I tried not to take it unless I really had to. Good luck! Believe it or not, it does get better.

With my first pregnancy I was able to stop the vomitting by taking Zofran tablets by mouth. The nausea was still prevalent; however, I was able to stop the vomitting. With my second pregnancy the Zofran tablets were not enough and my insurance company only allowed enough for three days each month. By my seventh week of pregnancy I was severely dehydrated and my ketone level was measuring an astonishing 3+. My doctor contacted a home health agency (Matria) and a Zofran IV pump was started. I wore an IV pump in my legs for ten weeks and was still often unable to keep food down or fluids in for the majority of the first trimester. Dehydration and weight loss were the doctor's main concern. A nurse once explained to me that water floats on your stomach and will usually be the first thing to come up when nauseas; drink heavy drinks like Slurpees or Sonic slushes. Avoid anything carbonated and don't drink through a straw; air may cause more sickness and indigestion. Also, try a cracker or two and some cheese or peanut butter. Just remember that cheese will contribute to constipation but is good protein. Hang in there. Normally the nausea lessens by the second trimester.

Phinergan worked with both my prenancies. More with the second than with the first. Sprite, saltines, ginger, etc. didn't work for me. Make sure you are getting enough to eat. The baby can't live off anything you have already stored.

Hi Jodi
Sounds like you had difficulty becoming pregnant and now being pregnant. Hang in there.

I was sick from the beginning of my pregnancy all the way to the day I had my twins. I'm talking nauseated, vomiting and yes constipation. Because of the nausea I was not able to eat very much so I didn't have indigestion. I tried every remedy out there for the nausea with no success. FINALLY, I was prescribed Zofran and I had relief! I used the dissolving tablets for most of my pregnancy up to the day of birth.

HTH and I hope you get some help.

I was nauseous for the first part of my pregnancy. So I sucked on peppermints all day. It took my nausea away. When I didn't have peppermints and would have the first sign of nausea I would smell (ok this is going to sound strange, but it worked) Lemon juice. I actually bought some Lemon Juice and would pour myself a small bit in a glass right before I would go to bed. First thing in the morning I would go to the bathroom and then smell the lemon each time I felt like the nausea was coming on. However the peppermints were my first choice of easing the nausea.

I took pepcid chewable for the indigestion; however the peppermints also helped that.

The constipation is something you need to get under control now. I had such a bad experience that I actually had to go to the doctor so that she could help me remove it. Not fun at all. I suggest that you start eating allot of fiber products. My OB said it was ok to take Fibercon every day. (Fiber: lettuce, grapes, apples)

I took vitamin B6 and it seemed to help. I believe I took 100mg twice a day, but you could probably check with your doctor or look on the internet for exact dosing. Congratulations on the pregnancy!

I just wanted to second the Zofran idea!! Do not let them send you home with phenergen (sp??) It is cheaper, and they say it works the same, but they lie :) I was sooooo sick, I empathize with you, but the Zofran really helps make it tolerable. Also, eat what you think sounds good immediately! I cant tell you how many Taco Bell burritos (without onion) I ate last pregnancy. It was different with each one, but there always seemed to be one thing that did it with each of my 3 babies. Yes, I am sad to say, I was very sick with all 3 and can you believe it, we are trying again! Also, abig must is popsicles and ice from sonic, both will help keep you hydtrated. If your dr suggests going to get some IV meds, do it, I fought it at first, but once I got something in me I felt tons better. Good luck

I got these suckers that are called Preggy pops. They worked like a charm you can get them at motherhood or somewhere like that. Sometimes small drug stores have them but your best bet is somewhere along the lines of motherhood type places.

are you nauseous or vomiting? 8 weeks was actually the MOST nausea for both of my pregnancies. Try to munch on something all day (lots of snacks rather than big meals) and drink plenty of water. Constipation is likely from the iron in your prenatal vitamin. Get a regular over the counter multivitamin without iron for a while. You won't really need the iron til the third trimester anyway.
The only other thing is to wait. It should all be better in a couple weeks!
Congrats!

If all else fails and you can afford it, get Zofran. It worked well for me. I had a friend who even had to get a zofran pump b/c she lost so much fluid. Mine wasn't that bad, thank good ness!

Zantac has worked well for me (OTC) this pg and last. But I know some people need prescription stuff. I also need the 150 for it to work-the 75 doesn't do the trick!

Hi - hang in there. It does get better. I had horrible heartburn/indigestion - try grapefruit juice (pink is what I used). I know it sounds weird but it worked. Make sure you keep food in your stomach at all times - crackers, cheese, whatever...just eat what you can. Don't get out of bed without eating a cracker. I kept them on my nightstand and ate them even during the night.
Congrats and good luck with the nausea.

I was sick enough to take off work a few days, and was late several times. Then, I found SEA-BANDS. I just knew they wouldn't work, but for me they did. No medicine involved. They are wristbands with little buttons that press into a pressure point in your wrists. I bought them at CVS for about $10. They didn't get rid of all the nausea but they did make it where I could function and reduced the # of times I vomited by at least half.

Hi Jodi,
First of all, congrats. I did a few things to get through...
1. had to eat foods with fat in it...no being good during the first trimester for me. I only gained 34 pounds with both pregnancies so it did not make me gain too much.
2. peppermints, the candy, tea, breath mints, gum whatever you have...keep on hand at all times.
3. Ensures. I did not have the patience for crackers and ginger ale, especially in the middle of the night, so I drank an ensure. I would definitely drink one during a bathroom break in the middle of the night so that when I woke for the day I had something on my tummy. It took two minutes and I was back out to sleep. My nausea was due to not eating enough (however that is possible) because if I kept a full tummy I felt better.

Good luck and just know that this will pass...hopefully sooner than later for your sake.

The thing that helped me the most with nausea was crushed ice.
I am not sure why it helped but it did. It helped with the amount of water you have to take while your PG too.

Try Sonic or QT crushed ice, and you can even get it by the bag if you like. At Sonic you just ask fo rit and they bring it out, QT you have to ask the cashier a bag for crushed ice and they will get you one, and its the same cost as regular ice.

I was throwing up the whole 9 months! I was given a couple of prescriptions, but the only thing that actually worked was Zofran. It is made for chemotherapy kids originally. It is expensive... 10 pills for $75 and that is with insurance! I cut them in half and only took them when I truly needed them (which was every morning on days I went to school or work!)With constipation... eat a lot of fruits and veggies, and drink water pretty much all day long! Also, don't put off eating even if you have the mentality that "I'll just throw it up anyway!!!" that will only make your nauseousness worse. Eat small meals/snacks all day, have a jar of peanut butter and a bag of crackers and a giant water on your bedside table so when you wake up, you can immediatly put something in your system.

I was nauseous a lot during my first trimester. Pepperments worked well until I dicovered 'Preggie Pops' They are suckers (or losenges) you get at a specialty kids store or online. (I've never seen them in stores or a CVS or any of the such) Preggie Pops are amazing and I took them EVERYWHERE. Also, indigestion, never had it in my life, until pregnancy. I lived off of Rolaids/Tums. My DR said it was ok that I ate them like candy b/c they were a good source of calcium, so eat up!! Constipation...Take Fish oil capsules, it softens your stool and is also good for brain development for the baby. Good Luck.

My doctor recommended caffine free regular coke. I thought it was silly, but man did it work! I also always had bread and crackers on hand to help settle my stomach. I know the coke has a lot of sugar, but it was a lifesaver.

The other ideas are good ones- let me add sucking on peppermint candies! That halped me. Celstial Seasonings makes a Tummy Mint tea that is good too, it kind of depends on what YOU want.
For constipation, along w/ the water eat pleanty of fresh fruits and veggies or try dried apricots :-)
Congratulations!

If you've ever had any problems with reflux pre-pregnancy then it could be that because it makes it impossible to control just by watching what you eat and drink. I tried over the over the counter meds for reflux and it helps some but then my dr. prescribed nexium and boy was that a miracle for me! I was so sick both times but 1st time around it wasn't approved for during pregnancy and 2nd time it was so I took it and new it very quickly if I missed a dose. It stopped the heart burn, nausea and the throwing up! Also, eat all the time! Good luck!

Hello Jodi. Congrats on the pregnancy! The thing that worked the best for me during my pregnancies (I have a daughter that is nearly 15, a son who passed away that would have been 8 and a newborn son who is 3 months old today) is something called Emetrol. You can find it at the pharmacy or in the section of the grocery store that has the medicines. It is basically fructose syrup which is the syrup they use in Coke so it coats the stomach very well and keeps the acid down. I only used the cherry flavor b/c the lemon flavor made me even more sick. Another thing I have heard several times from my patients (I work on a post-partum floor at an Arl. hospital) is that peppermint works very well. You can just suck on them or buy the tea, whichever you prefer. Another thing that helps is that you really need to try to eat small meals or just a little snack frequently, even if it's a piece or two of bread, a few crackers a sandwhich, etc.. As for the constipation, that is very normal in pregnancy. Drinking lots of fluids, esp. water, is one way to keep this to a minimum. You can also use an over the counter stool softener like Senokot. Lastly, for the indigestion, you should avoid spicy and greasy foods and soda. If it continues then the thing that worked best for me was the Rolaids Chewables. The cherry flavor is wonderful. Also, crackers and bread work really well if you have reflux b/c they absorb the acid. Some people may tell you to drink milk but don't. They have found that it helps to create more acid. If any of these problems get severe the best thing to do is discuss them with your OB. When do you have your first appointment?

For the M/s ginger ale (or ginger altoids)....I got to the point where I had to have something perscribed (zofran) but I was traveling alot and it was so bad that I couldn't keep anything down. For the indigestion, you can take tums, maalox, zantac (my Dr told me pretty much anything).....and for the constipation, just drink a ton of water and if it gets bad enough, ask if you can take a stool softener. Also, I have no clue why this worked for me, but when it got really bad, the combination of coffee, pankakes w/ syrup and OJ ALWAYS did the trick (I think it was the sugar?). Sounds weird, but it worked!
