My husbands nephew is going to be 14 in January and he is having a terrible time reading. He was recently diagnosed with dyslexia. I have no idea how it took this long to figure that out but I wanted to get him something to help him. I was thinking of Hooked on Phonics but i am not sure because I looked online and it really only goes up to eight. Just looking for some suggestions.

What can I do next?

Kaia,
I am a tutor for students who have learning disabilities. Many of my students have dyslexia. Hooked on Phonics was the first thing many of my parents bought only to find that it was not effective. I would not recommend the series. I use the Orton Gillingham Approach or Wilson Reading Method to help them learn. I agree with the other response about purchasing the book "The Gift of Dyslexia". I would recommend visiting the International Dyslexia Association's Website, UMBIDA (Upper Midwest Branch of the International Dyslexia Association), or The Orton Gillingham of Minnesota's website for additional resources that they would recommend. If you would like further info please contact me directly.
Best Wishes,
J.

Check out the scholastic website. They have some great reading books and other skills on there. I use a lot of these resources with my students in middle school. Books on tape that come with the book are another good resource for him. Although he is not reading them himself he can hear and see how the word sounds and looks. Good luck with it. It is a hard age for him to find out. Rest assured that often times kids that have reading difficulties find ways to hide it VERY well!
One of my favorite students did not find out what he had until he went to take his college exam. He had just struggled through and stated that he would avoid being called on for reading out loud and when he did claimed he was not following along. Good luck, now that your nephew has a title, he will receive help!

Hi Kaia,
Did you know that the word "cat" can be read 62 different ways by a dyslexic thinker? My husband and 8 year old are both dyslexic and AD/HD. My 7 year old daughter is a very good reader but has a very difficult time writing and mixes up her letters often. The book, "The Gift of Dyslexia" is the best book out there and very helpful understanding how to teach these amazing people. Available at Barnes & Noble. I look at it as a teaching disability. Your nephew is a picture thinker and it's the little words that are probably messing him up. Words like the, if, and it etc. don't have picture value therefore he stumbles when reading. He is probably a very bright boy and extremly frustrated. My husband learned how to read after taking a speed reading class. The class teaches you to skip over the little words. Anyway, the book is an invaluable source of information. Save your money on the hooks on phonics. Best of luck, L. B

It was not until I was in 10th grade when they found out that I was dyslexic I have more problems with numbers then I do with letters so it is not late to find it. I don't like hooked on Phonics it didn't help me. What I used was the Dick and Jane books at home so my friends would not know then I worked my way up. Good luck hope this helps.
