So my last period or actually miscarriage was July 17. I took a pregnancy test August 9 and got two positive pregnancy test :) So today is Sept. 15 I went to the doc. who for the first visit just has you see the nurse to get all the lab work done and so I didn't see him. And the nurse tells me I'm only 5 weeks? I told her no that can't be right. And that I got a positive test back on the 9th of Aug. so I had to be what at least 3 1/2 to 4 weeks along in order to get a positive test result right? Anyways we debated about it for a while and she said lets just say i'm 6 weeks and the doctor will see me in another 6 weeks for my first visit with him. So was she just off or what? or am I not thinking right? How far along am I? This is my third baby and with the others my due date was always based on my last period right?
I'd say you're about 8.5 weeks now, based on the pregnancy test. They are very sensitive and can frequently detect pregnancies 7 days past ovulation. So to be conservative, estimate that you ovulated on August 1 - that would have put you at 2 weeks on August 1 and 8.5 weeks today. I would definitely request a dating ultrasound.
According to pregnancy expert Glade B. Curtis MD in "What to Expect When you are Expecting", the beginning of pregnancy is actually figured from the first date of your last period (you use this to calculate your 40 week pregnancy). That means. for your doctor's computational purposes, you are 2 weeks pregnant before you even conceive.
If you had a miscarriage, it could mess the timing up a bit. Once they are really able to do an ultrasound and measure the baby and fundus, a better idea of how far along you are will be available.
They aren't going to count from the date of your miscarriage...that isn't a period, and short of using ovulation tests, there isn't a good way to tell exactly when you conceived.
In a "normal" situation, you aren't actually pregnant the first 10-14 days of your pregnancy. They count from the day of your last period because that is a KNOWN day--women's cycles are all different and we all ovulate at a different point.
You've only had to have conceived two weeks or so to get a positive pregnancy test...the day of your missed period is only 10-14 days after ovulation and conception (assuming a 28 day cycle).
They are going to take HCG levels, the date of your positive pregnancy test, and the date of your miscarriage to calculate an approximate due date--add in ultrsound results later. You'll be able to tell more as you get a little further along.
Given that normal human gestation is 38-42 weeks...you've got some time to figure it out and it will still probably be wrong.
In my experience, the nurses just sort of do what they're used to doing and a special case like yours doesn't get the special consideration you need. Part of it is that nurses aren't allowed to diagnose anything. Or set your due date. So they just do their best without putting too much time or effort into it. I've also found that while women are obsessed with their due dates (it's a HUGE deal to us, right?) the nurses get tired of squabbling about due dates with the hundreds of women they see every week. It's not personal to them, so they just say something to end the discussion and make you wait for the doctor to give you the final word.
Because you didn't have a regular period between a miscarriage and conception, I am guessing that there's absolutely no way you can know when conception occurred. Your ovulation wasn't regular, so how do you know when it happened? The good news is that you'll likely get an ultrasound at your first visit with the doctor, to determine your due date. My periods were all screwed up for some reason right before I got pregnant with my third. They were two weeks apart! So I had no idea what was going on, and told my doctor that. He said, "well, then let's get an ultrasound and find out." They can tell very accurately how far along you are with an early ultrasound.

You need to get an ultrasound. Call the doctor's office and request an earlier appointment. Express that you got pregnant right after a miscarriage and don't know how far along you are so you need an ultrasound at the first appointment.
For my third I was at 2 1/2 weeks when I took the test and got a positive result, it actually drove me crazy that I found out so early, felt like the pregnancy took forever. For the record it was also after a miscarriage.
That being said, if your last period was actually a miscarriage, you would not be able to count that period to gauge a pregnancy. You also could have easily gotten a positive test result when only a week or two pregnant. Which would put you at 6 weeks or so. It's not typical but it does happen.
Did your nurse base her decision off of an ultrasound? I am not sure how she came to the number since you had a miscarriage and not a true period. I would just figure that you are 6 to 7 weeks along and when you see the doc ask for an ultrasound if one hasn't been done. He can measure it and give you an exact number.

You will have to wait until your first ultrasound to find out if the due date. Her date seems off, its from your positive test. Your cycle could of been off or missed due to the miscarriage. It should of been about at least two weeks before the positive test. That still puts you two weeks future along.
you can actually get a positive pregnancy test as early as two weeks...i thought you could get a positive test until you had missed a period but i asked a handful of doctors and they said no you can get one as early as two weeks.. the whole thing i swear is a guessing game heck sometimes during you pregnancy they can change your due date a number of times i dont think they really ever know for sure until they do a sono
They typically go by your last period and after a miscarriage you can get a false positive. Don't worry, anything within a two week either way window and most won't change your expected due date anyway. Wait til you see the doctor and have your first ultra sound (that is usually the best estimate anyway because it is based on development.
Sounds like you are about 8 1/2 weeks along. But since you had a miscarriage, you might not be that far along since your cycles are messed up.
Just my two cents, but I'd rather take being 5 weeks over 8 weeks. That makes a big difference in your due date and when they start to get anxious for you to have your baby. Right now, if you would rather be 8 weeks than 5 weeks, that will make a lot of difference in the end, meaning, the dr would try and induce you 3 weeks earlier!!! I would take all the time you can get so you can avoid an induction and let the baby come on it's own.....The ultra sound will help, but that can even be a week off.
If your last period was a miscarriage, that was not really a period. So you can't look at it like that. You might have gotten pregnant that very first time you ovulated after your miscarriage and thus you would have not had another period.
And when you took the test you could be only 14 days into your pregnancy. Those new tests are able to pick up things very early on.
So there is a chance you were only 2 weeks in.
Just wait for you next visit when they do an ultrasound and they will measure the baby and adjust the dates then.
Just request an ultrasound.......... They are most accurate in detecting dates during the 1st trimester. They should do one since you don't know a date for sure.
