How Much Solid Food for a 7-8 Month Old?

I am just wondering how much solid food is "normal" for a 7 1/2 month old baby to eat? Should I be feeding her solids 3 times a day or just 2? She is in the 97th percentile for her height and weight and growing steadily.

What can I do next?

You can feed 3 meals. Your baby is getting close to the age where she will be able to eat some table foods and start to feed herself. She can eat until she refuses it, but turning her head or not opening her fouth.

If she can tolerate 3 times a day then that is fine. Go with what she can tolerate.

Our son was born June 17, 2008 and he is also a big baby. He is in the 99th percentile for weight and 88th for height. He has a meal consisting of step 2 baby food, three tablespoons rice cereal and a four ounce bottle at noon and five. He also has a snack at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. He has an 8 ounce bottle when he wakes up and with his snacks. Hope this helps!

My son is 10.5 months now. I was wondering the same thing when he was 7-8 months, i found that no one had a real set plan for a baby that age just how much they want whenever they want it. My son has eaten 3 main meals a day since 6 months. He eats a lot. every meal he was taking in 4 oz veggies, 4 oz fruit, and 3-4 tbsp cereal mixed with breast milk on top of nursing on demand through out the day adn 2 snacks (mid morning and mid afternoon. By 9 months he started eating more of what we were eating at dinner and in edition to his usual had added meat to the lunch and dinner meals, as well has a slice of whole wheat bread (lunch and dinner) and he started eating 3 tbsp of plain yogurt at breakfast. He is not a chubby boy,but eats like crazy. He is about 21 lbs and 30 inches tall. I know some moms that have babies that eat only 2 "real" meals a day. you have to judge what your little one wants to take in. From what i have heard my son is abnormal for how much he eats. As long as your baby is growing well you kind of have to let them drive the food train :)

At that age, my son was getting solids throughout the day. He was eating 3 "meals" and 1 or 2 "snacks". (I put "meals" and "snacks" in quotes because we really let him be the guide as to when and how much he ate--he wasn't on much of a schedule.) At that point, he was getting oatmeal and pureed fruits and veggies.

Like the others said, let her lead you - babies are not like adults with all our hang-ups mentally about food. They know when they are hungry and full...go ahead and try 3 meals of solids, and just stop when she does - don't coax her to eat one more bite, etc.(that stuff - one more bite, cleanyou plate, etc. - is why we adults have all these hang-ups about foods) Just make sure she is still getting enough breastmilk or formula for her age, since that is where the most of her actual nutrition still comes from.

dont worry about how much specifically.

trust your daughters cues - when she is hungry feed her, when she is full, stop. it doesnt matter as much how much food she eats, as long as she eats, and most of her diet should be formula/breastmilk anyway. solids are NOT nutritionally needed until AFTER a year old, so chances are any solids she gets is more for the learning textures and etc than actual nutrition.
and especially as long as shes growing, it doesnt matter how much shes eating.
she is doing fine. :D

This is what I fed my girls when they were the same age:

Breakfast(7am) - cereal + fruit
Lunch(11am) - cereal + veggie
Dinner(4pm) - cereal, fruit + veggie

They also had formula or breastmilk at each meal plus a bottle before bed (8pm) At that age I would say they ate about half a container of the food at each meal. Once they were a little bit older they ate a full thing of veggie and a good amount of cereal with fruit mixed in. They'll stop eating when they're full :) when they don't want anymore they will certainly let you know!

I followed the book Babywise II by Gary Ezzo. It was full of great tips and meal ideas and when to start table foods. It was so helpful, I would have been lost without it!!
