Hello,
I have hypothyroid (actually hashimoto's) and have known about it for about 12 years. From Jan 2009 until Dec 2009 I lost 65 lbs, without any problems. I've been floating around the same weight since then, but it's due to emotional stuff and food issues, I've lost more, but I keep gaining it back. I was at 250 at the time, so that probably made it a little easier having a lot to lose. I was also training to walk a half marathon at the time so I was walking 20+ miles a week. I read that you've had your levels checked, but there isn't one magic number, maybe you will react better with your numbers a little higher or a little lower. I don't feel good unless my TSH is in the .0's, rather then the "normal" 2 range.
Last January I started seeing a...um...I'm going to say holistic dr, but he prescribes normal thyroid medication (I'm on cytomel and levoxel). I guess he "thinks outside the box" kind of dr. He's written books on thyroids and is very well known in the field. He has two offices, one in Cotati and the other in San Rafael, he may be wroth the trip up here for you. He may be able to help you find a better balance for your body or be able to answer some questions. His name is Dr. Shames, he's a little wacky, but I haven't felt this good since I was in my teen's. Here's his web page http://www.thyroidpower.com/
Best of luck. I can understand how disappointing it is to try to lose weight and not be successful. Just keep in mind that regardless of your weight, eating healthy and exercising is good for your body, regardless of your weight. Keep up the good work.

i would also suggest you have some follow up labwork to ensure that your meds are at the right level. once your meds are dosed properly, weight loss/gain should occur as if you didn't have a thyroid problem. if your levels check out correctly, you are complaint with your meds, etc. - you should look into some further testing as to the reason you are having difficulty losing weight - good luck!

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism a few years after having my son. I finally started taking medicine for it, Armour Thyroid, just before getting pregnant again so I can't speak about weight loss ;-) My hypothyroidism contributed to two miscarriages that I had after my son and I had no clue. I just wanted to share that it's super important to keep on top of this condition because it can affect so many things.

Make sure your levels are okay. You should not have that much difficulty in loosing the weight when your meds are at the right level. It took about a year for my meds to get regulated. I have started to loose weight. Just keep up the exercise and eating sensibly. Also, what meds are you taking? I'm on synthroid. I can't take the generic brand, doesn't work! I still have a lot of weight to loose but one pound is one pound less.

There is no magic pill. Sorry, but there is a program that actually works. I chose to go the route of education and not medication 5 years ago.

I have been on Synthroid for over 4 years now and have a VERY hard time losing weight! I hope someone gives you a good answer on here cause I'd like to know a good trick too! :o)
I asked my endocronologist and he said he could put me on something, basically speed I think, but I don't want to do that.
Good luck!

i have hypothyroidism as part of PCOS. My dermatologist actually recommended that I take metformin to prevent going full-blown with diabetes (borderline now). He also said that the drug would aid in weight loss. I'm thinking h*** o* that right now.....I prefer not to take drugs as much as possible. We'll see what my primary says.....

Yes, I am hypothyroid and the weight SUCKS! I was extremly skinny growing up. I was only 110 when I got married 9 years ago. After I had my kids and found out about it, I am stuck at 143 and a size 9/10. I do work out and eat very healthy, and I can not loose the weight. I have recently started going to a homeopathic dr. and she got me off of synthroid and onto nature throid. Much better. I have so much more energy and feel a ton better. I am also taking herbs for my adrenals. Make sure you get that checked also. If your adrenals aren't working right, then there is no way your thyroid can be working. Even if you have "normal" levels, they might not be normal. My old dr. always told me I was in the normal range, but my new dr. tested also my FREE T3 hormone, that one was way off. So, just have your dr. check everything.
The weight thing, I have decided that that's just the way it's going to be now. I can't really do anything about it. I am doomed to be fat forever now because of my stupid thyroid.

You may want to see about switching the medication brand. I have always read that different brands can have a different effect. Name vs. generic

I have Hashimoto's and when I first went on the meds I lost 70 pounds. But over the years I gained it all back. I did nothing different. I wasn't even on a diet when I lost all the weight. I really don't have an answer for you. I have learned to deal with it. After I gained back some of the weight I did go on Herbal Life. I started to loose the weight but started to slack and gained back the weight. If you can afford it try Herbal Life. I used to sell it but got out of it cause when ppl heard the price they backed off. It really does work. Best of luck to you!

My husband has hypothyroidism and he had gained A LOT of weight since we first met. He is on the highest dose of thyroid medicine that is available and still has problems losing weight. The only thing that helps him lose weight is to take the pill at the same time everyday, exercise, get enough sleep, and eat very little. He seems to gain weight more when he isn't sleeping enough or taking his pills at the same time every day.

I have been on Synthroid for years for hypothyroidism and when I set my mind to it I can lose weight. If you can afford it try a diet like Jenny Craig or NutriSystem and see what happens. Personally I like Jenny Craig best and lost about 54 pounds last year. My problem has always been I love to eat certain types of food so keeping it off (if I'm not in an exercise program) is tough.

Good luck!!
