does anyone know about the tag reading system from leapfrog? i am thinking about getting it for my son, but wanted to know if it's good, does it really work? i had bought him a leappad a few years ago and he just never seemed interested in it. i was kinda a waste of money and i don't want to make the same mistake twice.
Funny, I got a Tag reader for my now 4 1/2 year old and thought she was too young for it. I wished I had gotten a Leapster instead. If I were you, I'd go for the Leapster.

We bought the Leapster game for our son and he loves it. We also got him the Leap Tag system and my daughter the Tag Junior system as well. They both like it. It's great for reading! The books have the characters voices and more than just the words. There are other things going on in the book that they can put the pen on and get sounds from.
If your child is a reader. loves books, then I would get it. If you want him to read, get it. It really helps!
If he likes video games and you want him to be educated at the same time, get the Leapster game.

I don't know about the tag reading system, but my daughter has a leapster hand held gaming system and she has gotten a lot of use out of it. It's great to take in the car or to somewhere where I know we will be sitting and waiting for a while, and all the games are educational, so it's not like she's playing some mindless video game. The only downside is that it EATS batteries, so I would either get rechargable batteries or get an ac adapter for it for when he's using it at home. My daughter is six also and she has had it for a couple of years now, it's easy enough for a small kid to handle and it can take being dropped on the floor.

I think this is what my dad got my daughter a few years back. One of the frustrating things is that there were several versions, one that was the book, one with the book + writing, and one was a junior addition. the problem was that not all the cartridges worked on all the systems. My daughter like many of the characters available on the junior addition, which didn't work on her writing addition (we found out the hard way) and the ones available for her addition didn't really interest her. I think at 6, he will be beyond the tag system, it seems more directed towards the preschool set. I would say get him the leapster, or just skip into Nintendo DS (my 6 yo really wants one for Christmas, but I won't do it since she got the leapster game system just last year and doesn't play much with it--my supervisor said that her daughter didn't play much with the leapster but plays with the Nintendo all the time).
He may be a little to old for the reading system now , you may want to look into a Leapster? My 6 & 4 yr old both love it and you can buy many learning games that teach age appropriate math , spelling etc.

My 5 year old really likes it. I think it is really cool as well. It is good for car trips. There are a lot of books for it now. We didn't use the Leap pad very much either. You might consider a Leapster as well. My 6 year old nephew really likes his and he might play with it longer than the Tag reader.
