Insurance for My Newborn

Does anyone know where I can find insurance for my newborn? A lot of companies are telling they don't insure until baby is 1 years old. I am due in early Nov and starting to freak out. Through my work I currently pay $12 a month for myself if I added the baby it would be almost $500 a month, thats would be just about 2 weeks worth of pay and I can't afford that. Please help!! I've filled out paperwork for that All Kids insurance but it seems like they are taking forever to get back to me on it, so in the mean time I would like to get some quotes.

What can I do next?

Hi S., I believe that your new baby will be covered by YOUR current insurance for that onee year after the birth. Its just part of the followup of birth.

I'm not sure if you are seeking health insurance or medical, but I'm sure which ever you were seeking you have found it. But, if not check into Atena for medical they have really good quotes, and they seem to be the only company that had "child only" policies.

I assume you mean medical insurance. You may want to check with the insurance you use to see if your baby is covered under your policy when you give birth, and for how long. This is how it has been each time I had kids. =)

As a rule, insurance companies do not cover JUST a child, and you would have to be covered on the policy as well. To get quotes, you could try www.insurance.com and click the tab at the top for Health/Medical Insurance.

You should also talk with your benefits adminstrator at work and find out WHY the cost would be so much higher, because that is ridiculous. Send an email, if possible, because then you will have the amount in writing. An increase of over 300% in cost just to add one dependent just doesn't sound right. Most companies over Associate + Dependent coverage as well as Family coverage. Associate + Dependent is a lot cheaper.

If you have any problems with All Kids, email me. I looked into processing times and they are only taking around 10-15 days, so my guess is that the caseworkers are holding yours because your baby is not born yet. Similar to other insurance, you can't apply until the baby is born. But for All Kids in the case of newborns, coverage can get backdated to the date of birth. I work for the Governor in healthcare and would be very happy to help. Any problems at all, do not hestitate to contact me.

I suggest you call the All Kids Hotline at 1-866-ALL KIDS and ask them about the application. It may be that they are holding it, or that they need some piece of missing information.

All Kids is available irrespective of your income and irrespective of any medical problems your child might have. The premium varies with your family income starting at $0. If for instance your a family of 4 with around $40k per year, then the premium is $40 per month. info is available at www.allkids.com

One thing to watch is your baby will qualify immediately for All Kids as a newborn but if your baby had insurance, then he or she would only qualify by being uninsured for a year unless you lose your job and with it your insurance or a few more rather limited circumstances.

The All Kids program takes at least 45 days until you get an answer. You won't find health insurance for a newborn at a reasonable price. Depending on when you filled out your All Kids application, the best thing I can say is go with what your works offers. Any private insurance you get will have very high deductables and your going to be taking that newborn in a lot the first few months. And that is assuming he/she is healthy. If you get approved from All Kids, depending on your financial status, they may pay any previous medical bills. You will have to talk to them about that. You should also look for a pediatrician that takes All Kids and is accepting new patients. I don't know if the state will give you list of doctors if you've not been approved yet, but call them and ask. I hope that helps.

i am using the all kids program , it took like 60 days after i filled out the application for the insurance stuff to come to me , but i pay 35$ a month for my 3 kids so its a good deal , have you contacted them to check the status of your application , also if you have a dr for your baby that will work with you and just bill you for the appointments and shots than you can submit all the medical bills you accumulate and they should pay for it , thats what they are doing for me .
hope that helps:)

Keep calling AllKids. It is too good to pass on.

My husband's former job had insurance rates like yours. His company almost completely paid for his coverage, but contributed nothing towards dependants. Not all companies contribute towards dependant coverage, which explains the radical difference between prices. When there is a less steep increase, it means the company is kicking in towards the rest of the family. It is nice, but by no means are they required to do it.

I agree! All Kids is great and I would just check with it. How long ago did you fill out your app and send it in?

Also, I have never heard of an insurance, especially through work say they do not insure till the baby is at least 1. Wow. What kind of insurance is it? I have never heard of that. Good luck and I have the info upstairs for All Kids so you can call them, so if you need it and do not have it yet, let me know and i will get you the info.

Not sure where you live but we are on an independent (self-pay) plan through Unicare (unicare.com) We only pay $219 per month for my husband, myself and our 9month old (who has been covered since birth) with a $3,000 deductable. They don't offer maternity coverage in our state, but still cover doc visit and discount any service they don't cover in the maternity realm. Feel free to email me directly if you have any further quesions (____@____.com).
Good luck!

I work for a licensed insurance agent in Naperville, IL. His name is TOm Kenney. We sell Blue Cross, Humana, Unicare insurance among others. I am sure that you can get insurance for your baby before one, but I do believe you have to wait until after the first check up at 2 weeks. I promise, if you call Tom, he will be able to help you. The number is ###-###-####.

We currently have all kids for our 8 month old and while it DID take close to 2 months to get it all done an dover with the policy itself is retroactive for 90 days prior to APPLYING, so rest assured if you are eligible (which EVERYONE is because it is not low income based), then your policy will be retroactive to cover the past bills.

I agree. Call their office and find out who your caseworker is. You might at least get an ETA on when your paperwork will be done. It does take some time for them to process everything, but once you're done that little slip of paper is like gold when it comes to peace of mind knowing your kids are covered. In our case my husband's company didn't offer insurance at all (small company) so the whole family is on it for now. The husband and I have "spend-downs" which means they only cover so much (based on my husband's income), but the kids are totally covered. It is SUCH a relief. They covered my pregnancy and delivery too, so if your insurance tries to back out of paying on anything, you might be able to get help from the program for that.

Good luck!

Hi S.,
When I was pregnant with my daughter and I went down to the local Department Of Human Services. I got the medical card thru there, they will give you a temp one if needed. I know that my sister has the All Kids thru there and because her job offers her insurance but it cost her $450 a month for her son she didn't take it but kept the insurance on her. She went to the DHS and got all kids and pays some type of co-pay. I know that she said that they just passed a law stating that if you have your child on an insurance plan and then switch you have to wait a year. So I would check into it before you put the child on your insurance. If you are around the Woodstock area I think the phone # is ###-###-####. If you go in person you get it a lot quicker than if you have them mail you an application. What's the worst they can say is no they won't help. I would call or go there. Good Luck and Congratulations on the baby!

Hi S.,

Go on-line and get the number for All Kids and call them back. That was the point of the gov.'s push for "no child in Illinois will be without insurance." You may be bounced from one person to another (it is a government department) but stick it out even if you're on the phone for an hour (the open very early so call early!). If you don't have that kind of time, call your hospital insurance department and have them give you a number to call. They should be very helpful considering they need you to have insurance just as much as you do!

Good Luck,
L.
