Hi, I have a six year old daughter in first grade. She loves science , math, robots, and animals, and is not at all interested in the things that the other girls in school like. I love her unique personality and I couldn't be more proud of her. I have no problem that she doesn't like princesses or Barbies. However, I was wondering if anyone knew of activities where she may meet like-minded girls to play with? Most of the activities she likes have a lot of boys and although she doesn't mind playing with them, they are just getting to the age where boys like to hang out with other boys. I would like for her to meet some girls that also would rather do science experiments than play dress up. Thanks, S.

What can I do next?

How about a visit to Sci Tech museum in downtown Aurora? It's all hands on science stuff, although she might be too old for it. What about activities through your park district? I know our park district has lots of activities like that. You probably know about the Dupage Children's Museum, but did you know that there are other museums in the same network that she might enjoy also? I know there is a big one in Chicago. I would also check with your library and get some books about doing science projects at home. Good luck!

I was also going to suggest sci-tech. I have not been there, but heard it is good. Also, in the summertime, Aurora University used to have "young scholars" programs. It was a variety of different classes for kids to attend. they had a lot of different science-type programs. My older son attended summer programs there for 4 or 5 years.(he is now 21). He totally enjoyed them.
Also, Illinois Math and Science Academy (IMSA) does summer classes as well. you might check their website or make a few calls.

There is a really great book called Picture Perfect Science Lessons, as well as a sequel, that shows you how to use picture books to teach various science lessons. I used them in my classroom and loved them. They are sort of expensive, but maybe you can find them used. You can buy them at the NSTA website http://www.nsta.org/store/product_detail.aspx?id=10.2505/...
It is so great that you are fostering her love of science! Keep it going.

My daughter was like that too, still is pretty much. But her interest is bugs. I enrolled her in library classes that she liked and yes they were all boys except her. You may be surprised but girl scouts has some boy aspects to it, especially the summer camps. Look at the local community college and library for programs she would like, don't worry if it's all boys in there with her, she really won't care.
