My son just turned 1 and I'm still trying to lose the last 10-15 pounds I gained while I was pregnant. I'm 19 years old 5'5 and about 138 pounds. I haven't really worked out much or eaten a strict diet but I'm SO OVER having love handles and a gut. That's where all my extra weight is, it's not in my arms legs or butt. Just my mid section. I want to know what are some good tips, workouts, diets that work??? Thank you in advance for the answers and god bless !!

What can I do next?

For losing weight, diet is 80% and exercise is 20%. Eat lots of dark green leafy veggies, some whole grains (cous-cous, quinoa, brown rice), some fruit, and lean meats. Cut out sodas and drink lots of water. Guarantee you'll lose weight, and feel and look great too. Worked for me. If you have more questions feel free to let me know. :)

This was quick, easy and painless for me. Switch to whole bread, try to buy a brand that has 3 gms. or more of fiber per slice. Also try whole wheat bread rolls, available in the freezer section the pre-baked frozen type are my favorite. Whole wheat english muffins are very tasty. Although, I did continue to use real butter as my favorite spread for my breads.
I discovered whole wheat spaghetti & lasagna noodles, and learned they taste great. If you are reluctant to try them, mix white & whole wheat noodles and you won't notice a difference. Or make 2 batches one white and one whole wheat.
After 3 months I lost 15 lbs. The whole wheat breads & pasta's satisfied my appetite for longer periods throughout the day, so I ate less, but didn't feel starved. Good news, after adding the whole wheat to my diet, I have eliminated nearly all my previous bouts of heartburn & intestinal upsets.
My excess weight was mostly in my mid section. My muffin (top) roll is much leaner and clothes actually fit me well at my current weight.
I've kept the weight off for 16 months, I haven't had to struggle to maintain my weight. A pleasant side effect was that my cholesterol levels (which were hight) dropped 60 points, which made me & my Doctor happy.
If you drink soda, you may want to consider giving up soda pop, even if you drink diet soda. Some people feel that diet soda makes them hungry! Yikes!!
I hope this helps! I wish you well.

140 pds is the ideal body weight for someone your age and height. but then again I know from personal experience that number isnt acurant for everyone (I was a size four before I had my baby and yet 145pds at 5ft2) I think the elliptical machine provides a great workout (your can burn twice as much than on the treadmill) and it is well worth the money invested in it. also dancing...get some dance workout dvds and turn them on on a regular basis. its fun and works out your whole body.

Weight watchers is great if you are looking for help making a lifestyle change. Some quick, easy things to start though include cutting out processed foods, high fructose corn syrup, MSG, soda, artificial everything (as much as possible). Butter over margarine, just in small amounts; sugar over sugar-free; whole grain over white flour; etc.... The whole wheat trick is great. I have also found that adding veggies to EVERYTHING is great. You can eat more for fewer calories that way. Taebo is great, so the eliptical, I also do Gillian Michaels "Trouble Zone" workout and her other cardio workout. I also suggest getting a pedometer and trying to increase your number of steps. In two years I have gone from 7,000 steps per day to 15,000 on average. It really makes you aware of how much or how little you are moving. Good luck, it is tough to lose that middle once it's there and it only gets harder. The trick really is to burn more calories than you take in. Your tummy can be as tight as tight can be but no one knows if there is a layer of fat over the top. One more thing that I have found really works for me, I do my best to cut out sugar and to ensure that I include some type of protein with every meal - peanut butter & apples is my new favorite. I was at a plateau weight wise and have lost 6 more pounds just by making those two adjustments.

Tae Bo! lol no seriously, its a work out and a half. I had it free on demand after I had my first baby, it was really hard to do it along with the video without feeling silly but I did, and I was down to pre baby before I hit the 3 month mark,I bought it with my second and I felt comfortable in a bikini after the 4 month mark, lol with the last I procrasitinated and it was the 6 month mark before I hit prebaby weight (I'm 5'7 and 135) I bought the Tae Bo Extreme that came with the Free Tae Bo Abs (the abs one is the one I use the most) Of course watching what you eat helps too. I try to keep the daytime food to fresh fruit or veggies but we go all out for dinner, steak potatos and all.

Don't listen to people who tell you that because you had a baby you will never look the same again. It's just not true.....if you work at it. With both my babies i nursed and dieted in order to shed all my baby weight and then some. For me i did weight watchers the first time and slim fast after my second baby. Really it boils down to calorie intake. You have to record how many you are eating so you can makes sure you eat the right amount in order to drop those lbs. Like for you......probably around 1500 to 1800 calories a day. If you stayed right around there everyday you would start to lose weight. It can be hard but if you stick with it you could do it.

Our bodies do change from having a baby. It's a major trauma, and it may never go back to what it was before you had your son.

However, the chances of YOUR body going back at 19 are a lot greater than mine doing the same thing in my mid 30's.

If there were an easy answer, we'd all be there, and there wouldn't be billions of dollars spent each year on weight loss products.

It's not as easy as calories in vs. calories out. It's not as easy as changing from white bread to wheat bread. But, my guess is that if you increase your exercise levels and monitor what you're eating each day, you'll have a better chance of getting back to where you want to be.

If you can afford a trainer, get into a gym and target the specific areas you're not happy with. I'd also recommend something like Weight Watchers online that makes you input all your food each day. You may be getting more calories than you know, and this will help you set and reach a target much more safely than trying different diets.

One thing I'd really encourage against is using diet pills (unless prescribed by a physician).
Good luck!

Hi Alice,

You said something that is very common these days...your L. handles and gut but no extra weight anywhere else. This is abnormal for the human body. Weight gain in a healthy individual evenly disperses over the body. Your young so you probably haven't noticed this as much as some of the older moms on this site but when you go to the mall even the skinny girls have L. handles and a gut. This is not eating too much food, this is eating the wrong food.

I said that to say this, when weight is around the middle it is a build up of toxicities from added chemicals in your food. Fast food and processed foods contain pesticides, preservatives, hormones, antibiotics, etc. You don't need to necessarily eat less, you need to eat differently.

A good fiber supplement to clean yourself out (detox) and an absorbable multivitamin/mineral complex should do the trick fairly quickly. I can recommend one if you like or I can give you more detailed information on nutrition. My husband was never an over-eater or a couch potato but had that large middle section. He lost 110 pound just by supplementing his eating with an absorbable multivitamin. The nutrition actually cleaned out the added weight and he has kept it off for 5 years now.

Hope this helped!

Regards,

M.

Try to relax, first of all, because you are at a healthy weight. Your body changes through pregnancy in ways that is cannot go back from--I carry weight in deposits that were never there before, even though I weigh less and wear a smaller size than before having children. If you haven't worked out or eaten a strict diet, then do so. Do you work better with peer support or on your own? Try finding a local Curves, Weight Watchers, or group of moms who like to go walking in the morning. Write down what you are eating and make sure that you are meeting your bodies basic needs (the FDA website has a lot of good information on food groups, meal ideas, etc. if you check out www.mypyramid.gov). Add in at least 30 minutes of exercise every day, even if it is just a DVD in your living room. If you eat or drink junk, stop (cut out soda, sweets, chips, anything like that). Sometimes it is easier to fix your diet if you write out what it is first rather than trying to switch to something different. I never follow a diet but try to eat at least 5 fruits and veggies, a few servings of protein, I drink a LOT of milk, and try to keep my grains whole and limited to 5-8 servings per day. I also need to eat enough to keep up with my kids. I drink between 80 and 100 ounces of water and try to at least walk for 20 minutes on my lunch breaks if I can't squeeze in a harder workout. That, combined with breastfeeding for a year, took off my baby weight plus 18 pounds. Good luck.
