Hi,
At 9 months my daughter's blood prick came back a little low so we really concentrated on iron foods hoping to fix with diet since it was just a little low. We went back 3 weeks later and it was a little lower than the first test. So then they did a blood test (poor baby as they had a very hard time finding a vein in her little arm) and whatever they checked for came back ok so we continued to focus on iron supplements (the drops) and iron fortified food. We just had her 1 year appt and the blood prick came back lower yet again! She definitely does not look or act anemic and seems like a very healthy baby. So we need to go to a lab for more blood work. I asked my dr what possibly could be causing this. She says she could just be pooping the iron out. ??? Anyone have a similar thing happen? I like to be prepared...what things could be causing this? Thanks everyone!

What can I do next?

I suggest that you're borrowing trouble. Your doctor says she's OK. Trust your doctor. You can get a list of possible causes for low iron but they won't apply to your baby. You could scare yourself and for what good?

Because you are worried, I urge you to call her doctor and discuss this some more. Tell him you're frightened and want to know why he accepts her level as acceptable. I assume he told you to continue with the iron supplements and iron enriched foods.

This happened with my daughter as well at 15 months. We were actually seeing an hemotologist for another reason and the mentioned the low iron. We did the same thing with drops and high iron food, didn't really change anything. Didn't really do anything else, and she was then and is now at 4 perfectly fine. The doctor told me to watch her milk levels as that can cause the iron to be low. He told me 15-18 ounces was more than enough at that age.

My sister's baby, who jus turned one, has also been low on iron for a few months. They said bc she was breastfed and they are giving her vitamins. They are not concerned, but keep checking and told her to keep up w the vitamins and iron rich food.

Iron is a mineral that can easily be 'washed' out of the system. A fast metabolism, or growth-spurt can both use up the iron.

You don't mention if your daughter is breastfed or formula fed. If she is breastfed, you should get your iron levels checked also. It is possible that you are slightly anemic.

If she is formula fed, is she on Soy or Regular. Does it have added iron?
My son had low iron from birth - 6m. I had to supplement formula with breastfeeding. I eventually switched to just formula because he seemed happier after a bottle.

You also don't mention what type of meals she eats. Does she eat meat and greens or does she eat mostly carbs like pasta and bread.

It has been many years but the same thing happened with my daughter. She tested low for close to a year. She was adopted and her birth mother had a tough time with iron in prenatal vitamins. As mentioned before you may want to be checked also. Anyway, she is now a healthy and happy 13 year old. If your daughter is acting fine and the doctor is not concerned, I would relax. Stay on top of it, but this may just be one of those phases.

My son's iron level was low for a few months starting at about 12 months. He loved yogurt and was eating a lot of it and had switched over to cows milk. It ended up that he was getting a bit too much calcium which causes the body to NOT absorb the iron.

My son always had issues with low hemoglobin levels ( iron supplements help build the hemoglobin and hematicrit on the red blood cell). When he was a baby I had to give him supplements. He seemed healthy otherwise. The doctors came up with all kinds of reasons for the low hemoglobin levels.

Throughout his childhood his levels were low. When he was 14 he was diagnosed with Celiac disease and it was determined that his hemoglobin levels were low due to the condition - it causes malabsorption of many vitamins and minerals, including iron which is an important component in building the red blood cell (hemoglobin).

I am guessing that what your pedi means when he says your daughter is just pooping it out, is that she is not absorbing iron from her food.

Hemoglobin is a portion of the red blood cell, you don't just poop it out!
