I need some good grandma gift ideas for my mom and mother-in-law for mother's day. My 10 month old son is the first grandbaby on both sides, so this is the first mother's day as a grandma for both sides as well. Both moms are active in my son's life and my mother-in-law watches my son 2 afternoons a week so I can work part time. I want to do something special for mother's day, but I don't have any good ideas. Help please!!

What can I do next?

Hi A.,
I make framed family trees and a very unique style of mother's bracelets and grandma's birthstone jewelry. You can see examples of what I do on my website: www.sugarbeandesigns.com It is very affordable and I could have it done in no time. These make awesome mother's day gifts! Let me know if I can help. Thanks!

I've used the Crayola Magic modeling clay to do both my boys' little footprints. It's mess-free, unlike plaster-of-paris, and comes in great colors, you can paint it, plus it's not as fragile and is pretty light-weight, too. You can add a hook to the back and make a wall hanging for a very sweet gift.

One awesome grandma idea is to make a calendar from their photos...esp photos of them spending time with Grandma and Grandpa. You can have these done online, at Wal Mart, Kinkos, Target, etc. She will adore it. Another idea is to get clay pots and put their hand or foot prints and plant beautiful plants in them. Most of the time grandparents appreciate gifts to show off their precious babies. If she doesn't have a digital photo frame I highly recommend one of those. They are like a photo album for your counter top and I always get lots of compliments on mine. You can also give a gift certificate with a little pamper to go with too. Have a happy mother's day...:)

You can make them a photo book. You can use Walgreens, Walmart or I use My Publisher.com. This is done completely on line, you just upload your pictures to these sites and then you create the book. I like these because I think they are really personal. It is almost like scrap booking but a whole easier and less time consuming. Also My Publisher has a special right now to buy one get one free, the coupon code is mom241.

i think a perfect gift would be to do handprints or footprints, at this perfect little age. i know there's kits at hobby lobby and such. but you could do it yourself, too. that's so cool you have "grammas" for your baby!they're so important. God bless you and yours!

Hi A.. Same here! For our first joint mother's day, we had 18x20" Sepia portraits of our daughter and son made and framed for each grandma. They both loved this. We also got cards and smaller gifts, and took them to dinner. It was really nice.

Good luck!

I was thinking of one of those footprint casts. I got a few of them while I was in Hawaii and they were not of plaster, but like a playdo material so if it didn't take right the first time, you could roll it back out and redo and it wasn't as messy. Also you could do a picture album with pictures of your little one through the months and doing new things.

This is my first mother's day as well and the only grandbaby for my mother. I am going to make her a yearly scrapbook page for Mother's day--which will eliminate me having to worry about every year! I am going to put his handprint (maybe his footprint this year b/c of his age) and a photo of him on it. I will then also list some of his favorites. So far, I have come up with favorite color, song, food, and activity. To wrap it all up, I will say I love my grandma because ____________. I figure it will be really special as he gets older and can do it himself. I am sure when he's 12-18, he won't like as much, but he'll love his Grandma so much he'll grin and bear it.

I think I gave a Necklace with a Birthstone Charm, they have the boy/girl charms that way when or "if" you have more kids it can be easily added to. You could also do a charm bracelet and add special moments to it. Manicure/Pedicure's are nice or massage. Handprints and Footprint homemade card always puts a smile on their faces.

I'm sure what ever you come up with the will Love it....

Hi, A.,

You didn't mention how old the new grandmas are, but I've always had good luck in purchasing a gift card for a manicure, pedicure, facial, or massage for Mother's Day gifts. It makes them feel pampered and in my mil's case, things that she would never purchase for herself. It's usually unexpected as well, instead of the candy, flowers, clothing that is often given.

It may be a little late to try this. There wouldn't be much time for planning the photos and story and get it printed up. My daughter gave me a book, that she had made of my granddaughter. A scrapbook type, that started with an announcement page with all the details of her arrival and such. It then has photos printed throughout with captions, or titles. This was very special to me since she was my first and only granddaughter so far. I am not sure what company she preferred, since she had it done twice and tried two different companies. Mine was done by http://www.Shutterfly.com

Hi A.,
My five month old son has FOUR grandma's, two by blood and two by marriage, to celebrate this Mother's Day.

Here are my best three ideas for gifts:
#1: homemade card with your son's footprint or handprint
#2: go online to JC Penney, Target or Portrait Innovations and get their coupons and take your son in for some very special photos
#3: take digital photos yourself and upload them to www.snapfish.com and make a custom photo album for each wonderful woman in your life. (i think for $6 you can have a 25 image album done.)

I am thinking about doing a photo album for Christmas and Mom's Day each year, which would cover about six months of my son's life...that way the grandmas all get albums that cover all the fun stages of my son's life.

Do they have one of those little albums to carry around and show him off. Put one of those together for them.

Maybe pay to have a family photograph taken with each one of them in it. (Seperate photo for each side)

Hi A.,
I know I'm not a grandma, I'm only 24 :), but what is always really cute and puts a smile on my face is seeing hand/feet prints. Maybe do that for them both and frame it? I'm more than sure they'd love it, as a little something from the grand-kiddo! I know there are more ideas out there, but that one just popped right into my head. Good luck!

I framed a pretty piece of scrapbook paper with my daughters footprints on it, a photo of my daughter and grandma together and the poem "I like to walk with Grandma" in a 12x12 frame. My mom loved it and has it displayed in their home. It was a nice way to remember our first Mother's day.

We bought a clay hand print kit from Michaels last year. You just make an imprint of your childs hand and then bake the clay. We wrote her name on it and the date. It also came with a frame so we could add a picture.

We have a tough time buying for the mothers in our family and this week we went to Baked Goods on tesson Ferry and made them platters with the handprints of the grandkids. They ranged from $25-$30. But they also have other items like vases and mugs, etc. They are very helpful. You will need to go soon because it does take a week for them to finish the product, but I'm very excited to see our platters next week. We had taken our Cub Scouts the week before and those turned out great.

I gave a christmas gift to my parents that could be used for just the grandmother. I booked a photo shoot with a photographer and included all the grandkids. There are so many people who will come to you or go to a park or special place to take shots. Then I bought the pics they liked and added a frame for them. They really enjoyed the gift and memories.

Happy Mother's Day to you too, I know it will be a special day for you as well.

Ok...here's an idea. I did this for my husband on his first father's day and he loved it. I'm sure you have pictures with you little guy and grandma. Find a frame that has matting around it. Then when you little one is sleeping slip out his feet. Use black craft paint to paint the bottoms of his feet then make his footprints on a piece of paper. Once the footprints have dried cut them out and paste them into the corner of the matte. Using a black crayon and your left hand write "Love you Grandma" on the top of the matte and the year at the bottom in the opposite corner of the footprints. Put in your picture of grandma and your little guy. It's simply but, I think it's so special. I look at the picture I made for my hubby in 2004 and am amazed at how tiny my little girls feet were. Another couple of ideas is to make a plaster molding of your son's feet or hands. You can buy kits at Toys R Us. Or using the same idea with the paint on his feet but put the footprints and a picture on a sweatshirt with "Grandma's little Angel". Footprints are a lot easier than handprints when working with small children. Another thought is at Hallmark they have grandma books. This book lets the grandparents share stories and write down memories of their lives. Then later they can pass it down to your grandson. For the grandma who babysitts you might add a litte something extra, just because she is probably watching him for free and you want her to know you appreciate it. Hope these ideas help. Anything you do will be special because it's the first Mommy's Day. I think the fact that you want to make this day so special for the grandparents shows how much you appreciate them and what they add to your son's life. Enjoy your special day. Write down a few memories so you'll remember them later.

Anything that stores or displays photos is something most grandmothers would appreciate. If you have photos of your son and his grandmother together in your computer, you can print them onto something with a sticky back, like a blank bumper sticker (find them at an office supply store) or large lables. Then you can pick up one of those photo file boxes and stick the picture(s) on it. You might want to print another lable that says something like, "Whatch Me Grow".

My son is now 22 and both grandmothers have passed. I'm hoping to be the grandma, in time. One thing I wish we had done is to send my son and his grandmother to have a protrate made of just the two of them. You could get gift certificates from a local photographer for both Grandma and Grandpa and then Father's Day won't be an issue either.

There are also specially designed journals at some book stores that encourage grandparents and/or parents to record their biography. These journals are full of pages that ask specific questions and then provide blank lines for them to write. I think they also leave places to place photos. For many people it is a gift just to let them know you really want them to tell their stories. You might want to put in a photo of the first time Grandma held your son, or you (or your husband).

What I love about these ideas is that they are a wonderful gifts for the Grandparents that will some day come back to be cherished by your son. Grandparents like to know their legacy and memory will be cherished. It is more than finding them something pretty or useful. It celebrates the role they play in your lives. These gifts can create joy for years to come.

As far as finding a gift to give your own mother, my son seems to be quite talented at surprising me with the most delightful gifts. He notices those unique and personal things. He has presented me with some very nice things, but the one that touched my heart the most cost him less than $5. He noticed that I often repeated lines from the movie Steal Magnolias. There are so many great quotable lines in it. He found a little paperback copy of the play script, so I could look them up if I forgot one. I still cry when I think of that gift. It told me that he hears more than I thought and honored something he knew made me happy. He teaches me so much every day! He taught me that when I want to choose a gift for someone, I should not think about what they might like to have. I should think about the things about them that delight me the most and find something that celebrates that part of them.

Good luck and happy first Mother's Day to you!

A framed picture of your son with them would be a nice (affordable) gift. I sent my MIL a thank you card written from my son's perspective ("thank you for coming over and playing with me, I'm so lucky to have a grandma like you.") and it was really well recieved :). I have always been a big fan of the Willow Tree Angels at Hallmark and they have a grandmother one playing with a child. Hope this helps :)!

Hi A.,
Do they like necklaces or jewelry (earrings, bracelets?) Once I made a custom necklace for a special dress that I knew she was needing and she still has it and loves it! I do make jewelry so it is easier for me I know, but you can probably do it too, you can personalize it or just use coordinating colors with a favorite shirt or dress! Good luck!

Hi A.. I am the mother of two boys who are 18 and 22 years old. I think a great Mothers Day gift would be to purchase a tree for each one of them and plant it in their yard. You didn't say if they have a home with a yard or not. But the trees could be sapplings and you don't have to spend a lot of money. I bet you could find them at Lowes or Home Depot or anywhere little trees are sold. That way every time they look out in their yard they will see that special tree and know that their little grandson is growing up just like that tree. I'm crying as I type this because I wished that I had a tree for each of my sons from when they were little. Anyway, Happy Mothers Day to you and I'm sure whatever you decide will be the perfect choice. Have a GREAT DAY. K. P.

A., I have a home based business where I take photos and engrave them onto pendants for necklaces, key chains, or charm bracelets. Mother's Day is a popular time for my business because you can take your favorite photo and have it engraved on the front of the pendant and engrave a special message on the back for your mother and mother-in-law. And the best part is they can wear it and show off their precious grandbaby. Just thought you might like to check it out. My website is www.kyleyscreations.com
