Hello everyone,
I am pregnant with #2, I am 6 weeks along and my nausea is getting worse and worse.
My first pregnancy I was really sick, and don't have the time to get that sick again.
I was wondering if any of you moms have good suggestions on elevating or avoiding nausea.
thank you!

Hi1
I bought a bag of mini peppermint patties and would eat one every so often. It was solid enough to keep something in my stomach and the peppermint helped.
I also found white foods helped: mashed potatoes, rice, rice krispies, etc.
Good luck. The nausea is no fun, especially with a toddler to take care of as well.

I am 10 weeks pregnant with my second and have had horrible nausea this time. It was very mild with my firt pregnancy. I was getting sick all day long, didn't want to eat or drink anything and was trying all the recommended tips such as ginger, sea bands, eating small meals, etc. Then my husband did some research and told me that a lot of women found relief by taking Dramamine. I started taking it once a day (the non-drowsy forumla) and that has been the only thing that has helped. It is safe to take and my doctor also suggested Benadrly or any other histamine blocker such as Claratin, etc. The Dramamine has worked for me and I am finally eating again.

Hi J.,

I had bad nausea with both my pregnancies, so I know how difficult it is. My OB/GYN prescribed Zofran, which really helped me.

Hope that helps,
take care,

Hi J.,
Congratulations! What helped me was peppermint (sometimes) like Altoids and amazingly enough, licking on a tablespoon of peanut butter. Have no idea why that helped but it did. Make sure to have a carb and protein with each snack and meal. I eventually had to take medicine but these things helped.
Hope you feel better soon!

I am certain you will receive abundant advice and tips that will bless you, I just wanted to say how sorry I am for you! I know what it is like to feel helpless and sick and want to take good care of the little one and be the fun mommy again, not sick mom! Take care, this will pass eventually. Try some of the great advice you will be getting and bravo to you for asking. Ask grandma or someone to come take little one for an hour or so to the park and you can get some rest. People around you are willing to help and give her a little extra attention, even hiring a teen to come into your house while you are there just to play with her will help you feel better knowing she's getting some fun time and you get a little rest. Take care & I hope this pregnancy sickness ends soon and you are back to full energy in no time.

Hi J.,

What worked for me was peppermint Altoids (the peppermint calms the stomach) and ginger snaps (ginger does the same thing). I was sick through my entire second pregnancy, unlike my first when at 3 months to almost the day it was over. So, I would carry the altoids and snack on ginger snaps to calm my stomach. Also, I only took my prenatal after I ate some saltines or oyster crackers (not made with oysters, shaped like them), because the pills made the sickness worse.

What worked for my mother was taking a big glass of water and throwing up first thing in the morning, then she was fine all day.

Also, my doctor recommended taking Dramamine or Bonine, both are motion sickness medications. I would check with your doctor, but those may be ok. (I never did take them because they make me sleepy.)

I know what you are going through, I hope you find something that works soon.

I, too, have been much more ill with this pregnancy than with my first (but there's hope! I have only three weeks to go).
Anyway, ginger is a natural remedy, as many people have said here, but I can't stomach the flavor even when I'm not pregnant.
My nausea got so bad my doctor had to put me on a motion sickness prescription that is totally OK for the baby. You might have to use that as a last resort. It has worked wonders for me and allowed me to continue working a part-time job throughout my pregnancy.
Good luck!

You might want to try vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine) 25mg three or four times a day (up to 100mg per day). It is safe and effective for treatment of nausea during pregnancy. Ginger supplements might also help. But their use is controversial because of concerns about their safety during pregnancy.

Hi J.,
Well, I have had 4 pregnancies, and they all were just horrible. I remember delivering my first and trying to decide if I should throw up again first or just push. Ridiculous! To be honest, there never was anything that helped except medication. Ask your OB about Zofran. It is an anti-nausea med that is used for chemo patients. It worked the best out of anything I tried, and it is safe for baby. It doesn't take everything away, but it makes it manageable. I got so tired of people telling me, "you should be feeling better any day now". They meant well, but I could just punch them! I was sick from beginning to end with all 4 of my girls. In fact, with the last 2, I actually had to go on disability for most of the pregnancy period because I physically couldn't work from being so sick, exhausted and weak. I had more IV fluid than you can shake a stick at! One thing more I'll say and then I'm done. You said you don't have time to be sick again. Well, sometimes our bodies make us find the time! You are a SAHM with a 13 month old, so I hear you. Again, ask about the Zofran, try to stay hydrated because being dehydrated makes you more nauseated, and take your time getting things done around the house. Believe me, the dirty laundry will still be there tomorrow, too! God bless and good luck!

Most foods made me feel really sick. I lived on Ginger Ale til the last part of my second trimester. Don't take tonic water because of the quinine even though it helps with nausea.
I loved eating ginger candy too, I think you can buy them from amazon. They're made by The Ginger People.
Dried Cheerios helped in the morning, but I ate them really slowly.
Just make sure you drink water, carry a toothbrush and toothpaste around with you and try to hit anyone that suggest crackers to you......LOL

All the best, hope the nausea gets better very soon.

Hylands brand, I swear by they have a Motion Sickness tab and one called Carbo Veg(my favorite of the 2) for nausea. They dissolve under the tongue instantly and your nausea is gone in a matter of seconds literally. I used them with both my children and still do, I always have a bottle in my purse. Good Luck!

I lived on Saltine Crackers and Genger Ale for quite a while with my second pregancy. I also had to make sure I had enough snacks throughout the day. I was not diabetic but, I noticed that if I ate smaller meals throughout the day my blood sugar kept steady and this also seemed to help.

I also found relief in Pregg Pops. I found them at Mother Hood Maternity.

I had horrible nausea with my second pregnancy too. The one thing I found that really helped were Papaya enzyme tablets. There are different brands, and I like the flavor of the American Health brand. I'm pretty sure you can get them at Safeway or Raleys, otherwise a healthfood store would definatly have them. I would take two or three as soon as I started feeling bad and I would start feeling better within a couple minutes. I actually like the taste of them and they are a natural alternative to nausea medications. Hope you find something that works for you and you start feeling better soon.

I had the same when pregnant with my second. I tried to eat small meals/ snacks regularly which helped a bit. I also tried a lot of natural remedies that didn't work. I talked to my OB and she recommended UNISOM. It's a sleeping aid, but it helps with the nausea. Since it makes one a bit drowsy, I'd take half a pill before bed and none during the day.
I'm really against medications, I even give birth without them, but my doctor assured me that Unisom was safe and had been used by pregnant women for years. Just talked to your doctor. If that doesn't work, there's also Zofran. Good luck!

I know it sounds really weird, but for me the thing that helped the most was eating baby dill pickles! I saw someone suggest it on a forum like this and it really worked for me!! Hubby would bring me one before I got out of bed and I'd be good to go! Supposedlyit helps neutralize the acid n your stomach.. I just knowit worked like magic! Also, eating little things all through the day- never letting my stomach get completely empty helped a ton! Good luck mama- and congrats! )

I'm sorry you are feeling so icky. I did too when I had my kids. I tried saltines but found they melted, or broke down to mush in my mouth too easy and made me gag and then vomit. I ended up trying Wheat Thins and something about them help so much better. I think it's the hard crunch or more to chew and swallow, Im not sure, but you might try a cracker with more to it than saltines. If I kept a bit of cracker going down, I felt less like something was going to come up..Hope you are feeling better soon. (o:

You may have already tried some of these but just in case you haven't

1. ginger (ginger ale- the home-made kind with real ginger not the artificial flavoured stuff)

2. eat, small snacks throughout day containing protein. Try eating a few mouthfuls of a healthy protein snack before bed and as soon as you wake up (even before getting out of bed)

3. try those motion sickness prevention wrist bands (available at drug stores)

If all the above does not help much you could try acupuncture. That is both effective and safe in pregnancy.

Sour hard candies helped me. Also, letting your stomach get totally empty can lead to bad nausea. Try to nibble some saltine--or something else that doesn't churn your stomach--with a little water on regular basis. Take advantage of those moments where you feel okay to put something in your stomach. I really hated the sickness, too and feel for you right now. Good luck and congrats on the pregnancy!

Try this:

B complex liquid- put the drops under the tounge 2 x a day.(follow bottle). B6 deficiency can cause the nausea and b3/b5 can cause the vomiting. Taking a b complex liquid is best- because these viamins rely on each other for uptake. For example b3 needs b2 to convert it. Excess b flushes out if I remember correctly.

Magnesium- prenatal vitamins are usually low in this mineral. The National Research Counsel recommends a minimum of 450 mg during pregnancy. I think that is low, I have read that 8 mgs per kilo of body weight were required, or 560 mgm for 155 lb adult (not pregnant). keep in mind that you might take in somewhat adequate ammounts from foods and still become deficient because, 1. cooking destroys it, 2.processing and pasturizing food destroys it, 3.phytic acid found in cereals binds it, 4. high carb diets deplete it, 5.malabsorption from vomiting or diahrrea depletes it, 6. stress, trauma, and pregnancy depletes it, 7. sugar and colas deplete it, 8. taking calcium, zinc or iron supplements without adding magnesium creates deficiency, (drinking to much dairy causes over-calcium/under magnesium issues because milk is 9 parts calcium to 1 part magnesium) 9. Antibiotics and a host of other prescriptions depletes it, 10. Exposure to florides and chlorine in water depletes it, 11. Soy in all forms and kinds reduces circulating magnesium in the blood. (Only 1% of our magnesium circulates in the blood as it is.) It is because of the estrogen affects of soy that this is so. So any other 'estrogenic' food or chemicals (like America's main fertilizer on crops) will deplete magnesium from the blood as well. Therefore high estrogen during pregnancy may be a reason some women get sickness and vomiting. Magnesium deficiency can cause nausea and vomiting symtoms.
Options are Magnesium malate pills,or the best is magnesium chloride. "nature calm" magnesium powder for drinking, or magnesium oil (magnesium chloride hexahydrate in water suspension)sprayed directly on the skin and let dry. Do one or two of these magnesiums options daily.Excess magnesium flushes out. No worries. If you get diahrrea cut back the dose a little.

Also you can try putting lemon on your water.

I would not turn to prescriptions like Zofran. It has lots of side effects, side effects that show it affects the central nervous system. Some of the side effects, like hiccups, tremors, numbness, and slow colonic transfer seem to show that it affects the magnesium levels of the body as well. You cannot afford to affect your magnesium stores when you are pregnant. They are VERY important to maintain, and they are hard enough to maintain an adequate level as it is. Studies show that women with depleted magnesium are prone to preeclampsia, high blood presure, gestational diabetes, and miscarriage.

Of course you should do your own research on these topics or consult a licenced MD.

Blessings, Gail

Hi J.,

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Sorry you are hit with the "morning" sickness.

I noticed no one has mentioned acupuncture. As a practicing holistic nutritionist, I have worked successfully with many women in pregnancy dealing with nausea. However, I have a friend who is now 19 weeks pregnant and NOTHING we tried worked...and boy, did we try a LOT! Finally, I referred her to see an acupuncturist (this was when she was about 12 weeks along) and she ended up going at 17 weeks, still sick as a dog, but after 1 or 2 sessions she is doing so GREAT!!! Now it has been 2 weeks of acupuncture and she has virtually no nausea. Many other women have also had great success with acupuncture. Please consider this option as it is very important for you AND the baby to be properly supplied with nutrients, energy, and low stress levels.

Good luck,

Nausea was the worst part of my pregnancies! It can be completely debilitating...

If the natural remedies don't do the trick, I highly recommend what the doctor's prescribe. My OB also mentioned a couple things you can by over the counter that contain the same ingredients... let me know if you want more info. Best of luck!

I used this pill called "Mommies Bliss" and I truly believe they worked for me. It takes 5-7 days yo start working...but they are SOOO worth a try. I also used "Pressure Bands" for nausea, not sure if they worked, maybe it was just a mind game : - ) Anyway, any health food store type place will carry this Mommies Bliss...they are the same people who make the Grip water for babies (which I don't care for) Good luck...!!

Good luck with this one. I have two daughters and with both pregnancies I was sick for the entire 1st trimester. I drank ginger ale, used sea sick wrist bands, drank peppermint tea and woke up to crackers and toast. I hope this works for you! Stay optimistic and know that you have only a few more weeks of your 1st trimester and with that the less nauseous side of pregnancy.
