My son was breastfed. He never gave me a problem with the avent bottles for supplementing. However, my cousin could not get her son to take a bottle for anything. Believe it or not, a lactation consultant and her doctor suggested working with a sippy cup instead. It took a little practice when they were little but it avoided nipple confusion also.

I have worked with several breastfed babies with the same problem. The nipple that worked best was the latex playtex drop-ins. The feel more like real skin and they are shaped like the breast. One little girl had to be "tricked" into taking the bottle:
Her mom would begin nursing her, while keeping her in the nursing position would pull her breast out and stick the bottle into her mouth. The baby would latch onto the bottle and start drinking. With the baby still drinking the mother would slowing turn her away from her body and pass her over to me. This ensured the little girl that she was still eating, but she learned she could get food from someone other than mom. After a couple times of doing it this way, I was able to get her to start a feeding from a bottle. I would swaddle her (which was something she loved and made her feel comfortable) then I would hold her in the nursing position and offer her the bottle the same as the breast would be offered (gently rubbing it on her lips to get her to open her mouth). Once she would begin drinking it I could roll her over and unwrap her if I wanted. The mom would then give her a little "dessert" nurse once she was finished with the bottle. (she didn't want her to associate the bottle meaning there would be no breast and end up with bottle refusal).
After about two weeks of this process, she was gladly feeding from both the bottle and the breast at any point throughout the day just fine and with anyone offering the bottle.
The biggest key to teaching a baby to take a bottle is be consistant and patient! Good luck!
I had the same problem with both of my children!! My son, we tried every nipple we could find. We tried my husband feeding him like suggested, we tried my husband feeding him with something of mine next to him (the scent). we tried all this with me anywhere nearby to me not even being home!! All like suggested... What it took was for me to actually give him the bottle and we ended up using the playtex disposable liner nurser bottles and nipples. The wider based nipples, but not the ugly colored ones... the clear ones! We figured out that he wanted something that was not like the breast at all.
My daughter... She was another story... we never found anything she liked... By the time she would take anything else I just put her right on a cup!! Why waste the time with the bottle?? But now that I'm trying cut back her nursing we are having some trouble! So be warned!!

From my experience kids who are solely breast fed (both my boys till they were 2) Either love a bottle nipple or absolutely hate it (which is my case). The reason being most nipples release too much milk at once, while the breast takes quite a bit of sucking before it begins to let down milk. So my boys would always get choked up with all the sudden milk when they werent' expecting it and then begin to cry and would never take the plastic over the real thing again. They have all kinds of products out there that they say resemble the real thing, but the truth is your daughter is probably too smart to get fooled. tough situation, couldn't really help but wish you the best!

Hi J., I had the same problem with my son. My problem was after I came home from the hospital. I never breastfed so I had given him the glass bottles with the throw away nipples from the hospital. I came home and tried to switch to a bottle and he would not take anything but that nipple. so i ended up going back to the hospital to get more of those until i could figure out what to do. If your baby takes a pacifer. they make soothie pacifiers you can get and they also make a bottle that the nipple is made from the same stuff that use to make the pacifer and that is the only bottle besides the hospital nipples i could ever get my sonj to drink from! Both my children loved the older Platex Nursers with the brown nipple for "Infants," they did not like the newer, clear nipples by Playtex. We also used the disposable plastic bags that helped reduce air intake and prevents gas. I think you can still buy the whole kit at Wal-Mart. Good luck!
Try orderng this from one step ahead. A mom on one of my moms boards was having the same problem and this worked for her. Good luck sweetie
I had the same problem - tried everything and finally the playtex drop in (the old fashioned ones (brown color with the flat nipple) worked - but even that took several weeks of her going for hours at day care without taking much - and stressing me out considerably! The pediatrician gave us the best advice - when she gets hungry enough - she will eat - and she did. I was able to breastfeed for a year giving her pumped milk at day care during the day - and work full time. Hang in there - it is hard but worth it if you can do it.
Moms I have worked with have had success with the playtex nurser. The brown latex original nipple. Not sure why. Be sure to have her try whatever nipple when she is calm, not too hungry, and you can try walking around at the same time. Distraction sometimes helps. You can also help her by pulling down on her chin and making sure her mouth is open, much in the same way to get a good latch on the breast. Be patient with yourself and baby, it will work eventually.
It took me 9 months to find a nipple for my daughter because she was "tongue-tied". Believe it or not, after all the money I spent on nipples, at the dollar store, I found big ugly brown rubber nipples that worked. Looked ugly, but thinned and elongated when she sucked like a mom. It was hell for my husband, because I worked night shift and she screamed till she learned to sleep thru. Good luck. W.
I am still breastfeeding a 10 month old. He was the same way. At that age, I finally gave up and just gave him a sippy cup. He took the Nuby brand sippy cup no problem, it has a silicone spout and they actually have to suck rather than just a free-flow nipple from a bottle. I know MANY other moms who have found this to work for them too! They are sold at CVS, Target, Kmart, Babies R Us.
