Need Pediatric Dermatologist And/or Ped. Allergist Recommendations

Hi moms,
My 2 1/2 year old son has been on Pulmicort for asthma since Sept. He recently was able to stop the nebulizer treatments. During the course of treatment, he sometimes had a slight rash around his face. Now that he no longer takes it, the rash has become worse and has extended to his cheeks and sometimes his forehead. We are thinking that he has been allergic to something this whole time but that the steroid suppressed it. The pediatrician has given us two prescription creams that have not worked. They have been so harsh and have made his face burn. It usually is at its worse right after he wakes up, whether it be from his nap or in the morning. Maybe it is the fact that he puts stuffed animals and blankets on his mouth? We have tried just using cotton blankets and removing all of the stuffed animals. He still has his lovey, which probably is the biggest culprit. I have stopped giving him any of the highly allergic foods (like peanut butter, eggs, strawberries, etc.). I do still give him milk and milk products, so eliminating this will be my next step. I would like to rule out contact dermatitis before I see an allergist. Does anyone have any recommendations for a great pediatric dermatologist or allergist? We live in Gilbert. I got some referrals from the pediatrician but I thought I would ask here too. Also, has anyone ever had experience with this? Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you so, so much! I hate to see his little face this way!

What can I do next?

My son's pediatrician referred us to Dr. English http://www.englishdermatology.com to treat his eczema. He prescribed Alclometasone, which treated the outbreak, but it was the Vanicream cream that prevented any future outbreaks. I highly highly recommend Vanicream. (I use it for myself as well.) I apply the Vanicream to my kids after each bath. I've noticed that the times I skipped that step a couple days in a row, my son's eczema would start to appear again. I hope your son's skin gets better soon!

We go to Dr. Wong too and I have to agree with the first response, he is fantastic! My son was never on Pulmocort but he gets rashes like that around his body and Dr wong gave us vanicream and it has worked like a charm. We found out my son is allergic to the feathers in his pillows and that was why he was getting the rash. I hope you can get everything worked out and your son gets better, good luck!

Hi L.,
I am so sorry your son is suffering so much. I know it's hard as a mom to see this and it's frustrating not knowing what is going on.
I use Essential Oils for many things for our health. Your son can use them, too. Since he is young he may not use every oil but there are oils to help him get rid of these allergies! There is hope. I have blends of oils that are gentle and can work on his situation. Lavender helps heal and revitalizes skin. Our Kid's Wellness blend of oils is excellent to help his little body get rid of bad bacteria. Chamomile is a great oil for children as well.
Let me know if you are interested and we can talk more.
Thanks,
C.

Hi L.,
My 2 year old just got off of Pulmicort (today). We go to a pediatric allergist named Dr. Darrell Wong (there are about 4 others in his practice) and they have several locations- we go to Higley at Baseline. Their number is ###-###-####. I've never had to wait too long for an appt. He is wonderful. We have a lovey, too, but haven't had the face rashes. He had a terrible diaper rash as an infant and we finally got that fixed after 5 pediatricians and countless "remedies". Also, just be careful if you get off cow's milk and go to soy. We still do cow's milk and he seems fine but after some research about soy products (my son likes tofu), we only go organic now on tofu because of the level of pesticides, etc. in soy products.

I highly recommend Vanicream products- they are least expensive at Walgreens. They have a heavy cream, light lotion, sunscreen and soaps that the entire family now uses. They have never irritated my son's skin.

I have confidence that Dr. Wong will be able to help you guys. He's truly great and I know how frustrating it can be to see your little angel suffering- especially with some kind of skin rash that the pediatricians seem to just throw topical agents at. Pediatricians are great but they are generally not skin specialists.

There is also a fabulous website my mom just found for me called allergykids.com. I highly recommend checking it out. That's where some of my soy research came from. Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi L.,

I am so sorry to hear this. Having had asthma myself, I know what it is like...miserable. After curing my asthma in adulthood and studying it (and other diseases) over time, it has become apparent that asthma is largely due to exposure to environmental toxins. Laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, your mattress and other furniture, carpeting, paint, adhesives and other toxins can all cause pulmonary distress and asthma.

Food can also cause problems, so it is great that you are eliminating some of the typical allergens. I would definitely recommend eliminating dairy and wheat.

Also, you may consider acupressure (or acupuncture) for him. Both are extremely effective in treating asthma and allergies. I have a resource center with a list of doctors at http://healthyhabits.ws/resources-az.htm

Best wishes to you and your son! :)

Warm Regards,

We've liked Dr. Wierzbicki at Allergy Associates & Lab., Ltd. ###-###-####. They have offices in Mesa, Tempe, Chandler and Phoenix. At 2 yrs. old, we found out our son is allergic to all nuts. He was allergic to eggs as well, but grew out of it.
Also, we tried the natural remedy Grape Seed OPC's (from Sprouts) in smoothies and his eczema really cleared up. We haven't battled it since. When his skin looks like it's getting dry again, I use calendula ointment or gel.
