Not as Far Along as I Thought--anyone Else Experience This?

I had my first ultrasound last week, and my OB told me that I'm not as far along as we first thought. She said the size of the baby looks more like 8 weeks instead of 10, and subsequently, my due date has changed to 2 weeks later. I'm quite agitated at this (of course, I'm agitated at a lot of things right now), because my morning sickness, which lasts all day, is really kicking my butt. Now I feel like I've suffered a setback, because it'll be even LONGER before I feel better. Has anyone else experienced something like this? Could the OB be wrong? I need a glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel.

What can I do next?

For my first daughter we had 3 different due dates and none of them ended up being right. She came 3 weeks earlier then any of the dates we were given. So who knows you may not have as long as you think. :)

I had my first ultrasound at 20 weeks... and the staff there told me that I was probably only 18 weeks along due to the size of the babies (twins). So they moved my due date two weeks out. It sucked! In the end, I have no idea if they were right or not. My girls were born at either 34 or 36 weeks... they seemed about as developed as 36 week olds, but small even for 34 week olds.

Hang in there!

I went to the OB thinking I was at least 6 weeks, only to have an ultrasound and leave being only 4 weeks. However, I had cycle issues, etc that made it hard to judge the timing on my part. It was a little unsettling, but I figured it was just what I had to deal with. Hopefully, your sickness will pass by week 12. I am at 17 weeks and now feeling fantastic after about 10 weeks of feeling horrible every night (my night sickness didn't kick in until about 6 weeks).

Aww. Try not to let it get you down. Think of all those women out there who are longing to be a week pregnant let alone 8. Trust me, you are blessed.

Early u/s are considered the most accurate.
That being said, according to my LMP my EDD was April 29. Had a early u/s to check viability, and moved EDD to May 5.
Guess who was born on April 29?! :)

Don't worry about it too much.

W/ my first, m/s ended at 13 weeks.
W/ my second it was more like 16 weeks and even then it came back off and on till the end, stinky boy. :P

Hang in there. Lay low while you feel crummy, eat whatever sounds good to you and enjoy your growing baby.
It all goes so fast!

It happened to me as well. I measured smaller with both of my kids but both came closer to what I thought was my due date so I would believe you are probably pretty clear when the blessed event took place. A due date is an estimate..not to worry at all. :) Good luck! And Congratulations on the new baby!

There's no actual deadline in terms of recovering from morning sickness. It's not like you magically at 12 weeks are better, but this is very common. You generally should go by the original date you thought unless you have a good reason to not. My cousin has a 2 week range, my friend had a week range. Babies vary in size and development and the further along you go the less accurate you can be in terms of exact date. You're not too far off. Just hang in there!

It happend with my second son. Going off cycle my dd was 9/28, off the ultrasound it was 10/14, my son came 10/01. At all of my appointments my son was growing at the rate of the 10/14 due date and just came early. So hopefully that will happen with your little one.

They can tell you a due date, and you can try to guess on your own, but the baby will come when the baby and your body are ready for it to come. Our daughter was 3 weeks early. She did not even have foot prints.

I had a great pregnancy, did have morning sickness all the way through even while in labor, I just learned to brush my teeth , vomit and brush them again. I gave up on trying to deal with it or keep it away.. Worked great for me.

That happened with my fourth child, I just smiled and said okay. I figured let it be the due date and instead of being late like the other three she will be early. As it is she was a week "early". The other three were a week late and he pushed my due date back two weeks. Do the math, she must have been sucking in her gut or something cause I was right. :)

Ok Mama I will give you a light at the end of the tunnel LOL
I am 14 weeks since yesterday and my morning sickness has finally began to subside THANK GOD.
I have been so sick since 6 weeks, all day long severe nausea, into the hospital twice to make sure the baby wasn't been affected.
The relief I feel is fantastic. Your time will come too.
So try to eat regularly, even if it just coming back up,try the acupunture sea sickness bands ( I couldn't use them, they is a small chance that some people are too sensitive to the pressure,my wrist started to pain and my arms swelled lol) ,7UP and hard candy helped.
Best of luck and keep focussing on that light.

try b6 for nausea and Preggie Pops for sickness too. You can get them at Motherhood Maternity. As for the dates, its possible that you could be measureing smaller or you really could be 8 weeks. You can always ask for a second opinion if you are really concerned. Congrats on your pregnancy!

It is what it is. Due dates are only estimates. Work at accepting this new information instead of focusing on what you wanted it to be. Your pregnancy will go much easier if you take it one day at a time and focus on being flexible in relationship to what is happening at the moment. How you feel during your pregnancy will change over time. Try to relax and deal with each day as it arrives.

You wont know for sure until your farther along anyways. I had 3 estimated different due dates, all within 2 1/2 weeks together... and the date I gave birth wasn't any of them. It's really just a guessing game.

And ask for Zofran for the morning sickness, I was sick like that all 9 months and it was the only thing that remotely helped.

You never know how it will go. I did not magically feel wonderful at 12 weeks. I did feel better but it wasn't a lightswitch. I would just hang in there and do the best you can with each day.

I just went through the same thing. I got a positive home test after only 4 days of being pregnant (nowhere CLOSE to the 5 days before missed period) based on that we both thought I was about 3 weeks farther, went to the OB and I was only 4 weeks vs 6-8, bummer! If your morning sickness is that bad ask for zofran. Its a miracle! Chances are the OB isn't wrong if they are going by an ultrasound.

Everytime I have been prego I have been atleast 2 weeks less than we though according to my period. When I went in for my first ultra sound with #1 I was only 4 weeks and we though 6 according to my period. Had him 2 days before my due date. #2 I was 5 weeks and we thought 7. I had him 10 days before my due date. I was 6 weeks and we though about 8. I had him 3.5 weeks early. The OB could be wrong though it had happened I am sure. Just relax this is not a setback. You are just miserable now. The sickness will pass.

It's all a guessing game, at least according to my OBGYN who actually doesn't give "due dates"- he gives a two week range. He mentioned that when you give someone a date, even if you say "around", it turns into an "absolute". Babies come when they're ready!

A girlfriend of mine just had her due date moved "up" by a month b/c the size of the baby and the rate of the baby's development indicate that she's actually a month "older" than they thought!

OK! So the OB moved your due date back another 2 weeks. Babies come when they are ready and not on the OB's schedule. I knew when I got pregnant all 3 times it happened although my OB never agreed with me. Guess what, my babies came early by the OB's guesstimate of my due date, but about when I expected them to arrive. If you know when you got pregnant, than look for the baby to arrive anywhere from 36-40 weeks from that time. If the baby is small, you may end up with an easier labor than if you had a larger one. Again, there are not absolutes when it comes to birth. My largest baby gave me my easiest labor and delivery experience. PS Most morning sickness ends (or at least eases) around the beginning of the 2nd trimester when you may also get a burst of more energy, too.

With my first pregnancy my first ultrasound also measured 2 weeks less than according to my lmp. My dr said it happens all the time and split the difference calling my due date in the middle of the 2. You'll have atleast one more ultrasound later in pregnancy as well as all the measurments ect. so don't be suprised if your due date changes at some point. Hand in there. It does get better and is sooo worth it in the end!

My OB said DS was measuring about 10 days younger than my LMP suggested, but knew exactly when we conceived (within a day) and so he didn't change my due date. DS was born at 8lb 6oz 2 days before the original due date..my body was right, ultrasound was not.

I had a similar problem but the reason the baby didn't measure correctly was that it was a looming miscarriage. That probably isn't your case but just remember that those horrible symptoms mean that your hormones are climbing which in turn means you aren't miscarrying. Embrace the uncomfortableness in exchange for a healthy baby :)

Babies are NOT library books! And yes, OB do NOT have all the answers. Ultrasound is often off track, as is other technology in birthing.
Your morning sickness should taper off soon. Try ginger chews or peppermint tea. Even better, acupuncture is incredibly effective in stopping the nausea of morning sickness and balancing your system. If you need a referral feel free to contact me.
Also, you might want to consider looking for a midwife in your area. They are much more woman centered and honor YOUR body and your thoughts, and feelings.

Although it feels like a big deal when you are in the midst of morning sickness, two weeks is not really that much of a difference. With my second daughter my ob/gyn kept telling me I was two weeks earlier than I thought but I got sick so early I was sure that I was correct with my dates. And guess what - went into labor within a couple of days of hitting the 40 week mark and she was a big healthy girl. They may adjust the date again further along in the pregnancy, perhaps around the 20 week point when they check baby's development.
Later in my pregnancy with number 2 the scans were showing I was right and she was wrong with my dates but she said they don't change them unless they are further off.
Wait and see if you start feeling better when you think you hit the 12 week point.
Good luck! :-)
