A.,
I can offer you a referral to a group of midwives who do the very same thing as an OB/Gyn; but with more care, and will take more time with you.
They are Midwifery Care Associates-###-###-####. They have their offices in Bethesda. They deliver only at Shady Grove Hospital now. They offer the full range of Gyn services as well as birth services. Their website is: http://www.midwiferycareassociates.com.
Hope that helps.

Hi A. and welcome to the area. I would recommend Capital Womens Care off of Shady Grove Road in Rockville. It's been a while since I have been there. But if you don't mind a short drive to the Damascus area I highly recommend Simmonds and Simmonds they are wonderful.

Do not go to Brendon Burke. 2 days after he did my annual breast exam I found a lump on my chest wall above my breast. I returned to his office the next day and he told me it was a lymph node. I said it was a tumor and he repeated it was a lymph node. I demanded that he change my order for a routine mammogram to a comprehensive mammogram(that includes and ultrasound). The radiologist found that the Lump was not a lymph node nor a cyst. She said she did not know what it was.
I am a nurse practitioner and demanded a biopsy the very next morning.
The results were in 3 days later. It was infiltrating ductal carcinoman Grade III high grade invasive and HER2 equivocal which meant it had to be sent out or special testing . When the results for that test came in 4 weeks later it was Her2 positive the second most invasive breast cancer you can have.
While I was waiting for the results of the HER2 test, I ran to the best surgeon I know and had a mastectomy done immediately with sentinel node biopsy. The nodes were negative and my tumor was 1.8 cms. If I had waited or believed Dr. Burke that it was a lymph node I would be dead today.
This type of cancer almost doubles every month and that is why so many women die of this type of cancer.
His attitide was arrogant when he called me with the first test result and never called me with the results of the positive Herceptin. He sent those results to my internist because I am sure he was , at least I hope so, too ashamed to face me..
So, ladies take your health care into your own hands. If I had not been an aggressive Nurse Practitioner I would be dead today. I was treated with mastectomy, 6 rounds of chemo including Carpoplatin, taxoter, taxol when the taxoter had an unusual side effect on me and rendered me in a wheelchair for 6 months. and Herceptin for one year. This therapy was given to me every 3 weeks for 1 year. I have less than a 10% chance that I will have a recurrence.
My oncologist was the best, Dr. Fred Smith.
So when you go for your breast exams make sure your Dr. examines all of your chest wall not just your protruding mammary tissue as most health practitioner do now because a complete breast exam is so time consuming.
I saved my own life by being very assertive and aggressive. Don"t be afraid to confront. This is your life.

Hi, I know this isn't super-close to you, but I go to Brendan Burke in Chevy Chase. He is wonderful and consistently rated well by Checkbook and Washingtonian. He's not in a group practice, which I like because I know I will get the same doctor every time. He handled my daughter's delivery (4 weeks early, with the cord around her neck) so well -- totally calm and in control. We moved to Virginia last year, and I still drive in to Chevy Chase to see him (now every two weeks with #2 due soon), even though he's not in-network on my insurance anymore. Totally worth it to have someone I trust.

I also really like Capital Women's Care - there are multiple locations though http://cwcare.net/map.asp
I go to the one here:
9850 Key West Avenue, Suite 320
Rockville, MD 20850
Phone: ###-###-####
Fax: ###-###-####
I saw all of the doctors in the practice before I had my son and I particularly like Dr. Laurin and Dr. Wei (both women - there are a couple of male doctors in the practice too).

Please be careful at Capital Women's Care. I heard from a friend who used to work that some CWC offices are using Mirenas and Paragards imported from other countries. This means they are not FDA approved. This puts patients at risk because coming from other countries, the product's identity, purity, source, handling, and storage cannot be verified. Using these overseas pharmacies can risk receiving unsafe and ineffective counterfeits, even if they appear the same. And the physician can save hundreds of dollars on the non-FDA approved product, but charges you and your insurance the same price as a US FDA-approved product. Please be careful and ask to see the box and insert with ENGLISH language only. If you think you had an unapproved IUD inserted in the past five years, go back and talk to your doctor about a fda-approved replacement at no charge. I love Dr. Robert Footer, he is located in Rockville and DC. He is in Washingtonian's best. He delivered my first and I was so nervous the whole time. Any time I had a question I could come in and see the baby and give me piece of mind on his sonogram machine. That to me was worth it -also at every appointment if you want to see the baby you can. He is great at putting you at ease and answering all of your questions. He is in a practice by himself so you have the same doctor all the time which I liked very much as well. I really don't know how he does it, but he is GREAT. His contact info is:
3301 New Mexico Ave NW #336
Washington, DC 20016
Phone: ###-###-####

6282 Montrose Rd
Rockville, MD 20852

I highly recommend Simmonds and Simmonds. The group has several locations depending on where you live in Rockville; they are in White Flint Mall, Montgomery Villge, and Damascus. They deliver at Shady Grove Hospital (in Rockville) if you are interested in the OB aspect. My friend who referred me to them is a labor and delivery nurse and Simmonds and Simmonds was her top group to work with in the hospital. My favorite is Dr. Shrout. She is excellent; she delivered my twins at 32 wks last year, and they are healthy without any problems. She is also great for regular gyn as well. I also have had a good experience with Drs Martin, Helmbrecht, and Simmonds, who were all very knowledgable with my high risk pregnancy. Their White Flint number is ###-###-####.
