i have a two and a half year old who is ready to start potty training. we didn't train my son til he was over three, so it is a different ball game. i was wondering if any of you out there have tried any of the cloth training pants? we were exclusively cloth diapered for the first six months of her life, and have recently gone to all disposables for travel and because she is a big wetter. neither she or i like pull-ups, and the gerber cloth and vinyl trainers that we used with my son are too bulky for her. she is a pretty big girl, so when we put them on her, her clothes don't fit. i have one pair of imse vimse that are ok, unless she really lets it go, and i have ordered one pair of snap-eze AIO's to try. any other ideas?
You can skip right from diapers to regular underwear if you use Toilet Training in Less Than a Day by Azrin and Foxx. I did use cloth training pants, but only for about a week with my daughter and about 2-3 days with my son. They were both in regular underwear within a few days of training -- at age 20 months.

I did not use pull ups on my daughter b/c I felt they were not different than the diapers. She was trained at the age of 2. She would wet the bed a few times after. We all including her had to get adjusted. I used the chart system and gave her treats at the end of the week if she used the so many times. I used cloth and regular panies. She liked Dora and Princesses so I bought her those kind of panties. She wanted to be a big girl and I told her that she had to go to the potty like a big girl. All these things helped with her. get her some big girl panties and get the mop and carpet cleaner ready.. start a reward system never give up and in no time you will have her going regularly.. good luck!!!!!!! i told my girls that dora does not like to get wet so we have to put pee pee in the potty...

We used nylon panty covers (not vinyl--yay!). They go over the thicker cotton absorbant panties. They are really thin, and they're also nice because you can take them off at home as she gets more advanced and slip them on on your way out without changing her panties. They seem a lot more comfortable and a lot less bulky than the traditional all-in-one vinyl pants, and again--no vinyl. They don't contain an accident quite as well as the regular Gerber vinyl-covered guys, so watch your furniture and floors, but they seem a lot more humane. ;-) You might consider a "piddle pad" for your car seat if you use these. We use cloth dipes in our house and I'm coming upon training my 2 year old son. I've given it a half hearted try with some cloth trainers I sewed and it seemed to me that he didn't care if he peed in them. He's used to feeling damp from CD's so having some underwear with some extra absorbancy doesn't seem to be the way I'm going to go after all. I think I'm just going to put him in real underwear. Then if he goes potty he will really notice and hopefully not like it too much. Please update us on what you decide and how it works, b/c I'll be looking for some encouragement to get started again in a few months.
We have 2 girls that both potty trained around 2 and 1/2. Our older daughter wore cloth diapers for the first 6 months. We never did it with the second. Anyway, in both cases, we went straight from diapers to the gerber training pants. We bought the plastic covers for our second daughter, but haven't really used them. In general, we just do a lot of laundry and do a lot of reminding about the potty. We've had to make potty part of our routine to help her be successful.
We use the pull-ups at night and on trips. We occassionally use them on days when we've had a lot of accidents.
Good luck. Either way, you're going to have pee pee to deal with until she's at least past 3. It's hard to be patient through it all.

In the past I used some cloth training pants I got from One Step Ahead (or whatever their baby catalog is called). They had velcro on the sides and were the cloth equivalent of Pull-Ups. This go around I am using training pants from Wal-Mart (Gerber brand) with vinyl covers. I also have some AIOs that are so old the tag is gone. The two-year olds are easier because you can still find cloth training pants to fit.
My five-year old though, who floods her bed every night is another story. The only ones I have found that would fit her at like $25 a piece! If anyone knows of a source for cloth training or nighttime pants for over 40 lbs please let me know.

With my girls, i just went straight to panties. They aren't too bulky and my third daughter potty trained in a couple of days. They don't like the feel when they wet or poop. It is not fun when you have wet or dirty clothes, but it helped them to learn when the urge came what to do. Hope this helps!

When I was training my 3 children, 2 girls and 1 boy all I ever used were cloth-training pants. When they were wet they immediately knew and did not like the feeling. It would also sometimes trickle down their leg! This helped to train them not to go in their underwear, but use the potty. My son actually was the easiest to potty train! They did not like the feeling of wet underwear. My children did not take very long to train - my girls maybe 3 months and my son was within 1 month! I personally do not like the pull-ups. They are too much like diapers and just as thick. I am in favor of the cloth training pants and the cloth diapers - I also used the cloth diapers. I did the disposables when we would visit or travel only.
