Pirate Costume Ideas?

My son is invited to a birthday party and the theme is pirates. Costumes are optional but I thought it would be fun for him to dress up as one. Should I buy a cheap pirate costume or can I do it myself by buying accessories and using clothes from home. I need ideas because it's in one week. Thanks ladies.

What can I do next?

The Dollar Tree dollar stores have some great pirate stuff, hats, hooks, eye patches, etc. All for $1.00. Even if you do the clothing yourself I would stop by there to get the hat and maybe some accessories. Make sure you go to Dollar Tree which is a true dollar store. They have tons of other great halloween stuff too.

We made a quick & easy pirate costume for my husband once. First we purchased a basic pirate accessory kit from the store (any Halloween shop or store such as Target, K-Mart, or Wal-Mar will sell these.) I believe it included an eye patch and a clip on hoop earing. I am sure you could find a pirate hat, fake sword, hook, etc. We went to a thrift store & purchased a white, plus-size ladies blouse with gold buttons. We tied a red scarf around the waist as a sash/belt We used a red bandanna on his head. Since my husband has facial hair...no problem there, but you could use eyeliner for a child. I believe my husband either wore jeans or black pants. He wore some sort of boots he happened to own. Really, the eye patch, hoop earring, the frilly shirt, and of course, saying "argh" all night did the trick.

I was at the dollar store and saw great things for a pirate's costume. Add some jeans and a black t-shirt and he would be all set. Plus, if he loses and/or breaks some it you won't care 'cuz you've spent a dollar! Good luck and have fun!

A pirate costume is super easy! Cut off a pair of black pants below the knees and cut zig zags at the bottom (you can get a cheap pair at the resale shop, have him wear a pair of black or white knee socks with black dress shoes, tie a red scarf or hankie around the waist, tie a bandanna on his head, draw a moustache on him and at the drug store buy an eye patch. Voila! Pirate.

If you want to make one start with a bandana for his head, a fake loop earring (if he wants), use eye liner to draw a mustach or beard, and an eye patch. A white top and black pants would be fine. Do a quick google search for homemade pirate costume for more ideas.
