Hello everyone:

I have a 10 month-old son who is an only child and we are the first of our friends to have kids so not a lot of other babies for him to interact with. We can't afford a Gymboree membership and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for free or inexpensive ways to get my 10 month-old out and interacting with other babies close to his age? Thank you!

What can I do next?

Hi M.,
Don't know if you have heard of Meetup.com but I am a member of mercer mums group on there a lot of the new members have young babies and there are meetups arranged locally by the organiser.
Good luck finding some playdates for you!

Sometimes churches have Mommy & Me groups. I don't know if there are any churches near you that have one, but it might not hurt to call around.

There is a Moms Club in Hamilton. There might be kids of a similar age there, but there will also be kids of varying ages attending activities. But you and your child can go together to almost everything, except for Mom's Night Out.

If you go on Yahoo's website, you can probably find a playgroup in your area there. Look under Yahoo groups. If you don't find one, just start a Yahoo group of your own for moms looking for an infant/toddler playgroup in Hamilton.

Is there a YMCA or a YWCA close to you? They might have a group as well. I know there is a YWCA in Trenton, but that's probably 15-20 minutes from you.

Good luck!

I am also in Hamilton. I am working mom and most of the events at Mommy and Me are in the day. I am around in the evening and weekend. My son is 4 months old. I would love to try to get something going at MErcer Park and get my son interacting with other children, as well as me with other mommies and try to loose weight while I am at it!!!

Hi M.
I too was in your boat a few years ago. If you can wait a few months, go to the twp library. They have library school once a week for about 6 weeks at a time in the fall and spring(nothing in the summer unfortunately!). Go there and find out now when to sign up and when the classes start and sign up quick!!! The room is small and it fills up within the first day usually!!! The classes are free and you can meet some parents and the best part -FREE!!!! Ages start at 12 months. You can probably get a Spring class in. The teacher is great she does a little music and reads a few books!!! I loved it!!!! In the summer my son would see his library friends at Vet's Park!!! I hope you do it - my 1st son was loving the class and I took him there until he was 2 1/2. Then we moved on to the CYO Mommy and Me class - Awesome as well!!! Make sure you go everywhere with him as much as you can - my son is going to kindergarten in Sept and it is crazy how fast the time flies!!!!
Good luck!!!!

Check to see if there is a MOMS Group in your area. You meet wonderful moms and there are usually children the same age as yours. The moms are SAHM like you and understand that $$ is tight and they plan wonderful inexpensive/free events and playdates. Check www.momsclub.com to one in your area. I belong to one and it was the BEST thing I ever did for me and my kids.

Check out the local libarary for free programs. They should have story time and sing along programs run by the Children's Librarian. I've been to both Ewing & Lawrence programs and they were great.
