Postpartum Round Ligament Pain

Hello to all. I am three months postpartum from having my second child, and I keep having pains that feel like round ligament pains (pain in my lower right abdomen). I'm wondering is this normal. Following the birth of my oldest child (just 21 months ago) I had very similar pains, and I chalked it up to my body getting back to normal after a very difficult delivery. After over 6 months of this I finally saw a doctor, and I had to have my gallbladder removed. So at least I know it's not that! I did call my doctor about a month ago to ask if it could still be round ligament pain and they advised that it could and to continue taking OTC pain meds if necessary. I'm just wandering if anyone else has had this issue. If it matters, I am still nursing the newest baby.

What can I do next?

I agree with Charolette...as long as there is no fever or UTI/PID symptoms, you are probably totin around a tired out-of-whack (haha official nursing diagnosis lol) pelvis! Find a good chiro and I bet that will help you! Best wishes for a speedy healing!

J.,
I have adopted children and have never experienced childbirth so I can't advise you from personal experience. I am however a massage therapist and have worked with many childbearing women over my 16 year career. There are techniques which can be done on the abdomen to help with reconnective tissue and ligament pain. The massage itself can be a little uncomfortable but has reportedly been very beneficial in the long run. I'd recommend finding a massage therapist in your area who has training with pregnancy and postpartum massage. The chiropractic adjustment would also be an indicated form of treatment. Dr. Tria McCirdy of Barton Creek Chiropractic works with pregnant women. Call me if I can help. Good luck!

I had that after the birth of my second daughter. I too had to have my gallbladder removed but the pains still come and go. To me they feel like really strong menstrual cramps but they come and go randomly and its just on the right side. I just try to take it easy on the days that I am uncomfortable. My doctor also told me that it was normal and that my body is just trying to work things out. My daughter is now 7 months old and I still have them on occasion. I stinks, but I don't think there is anything you can do about it.

Dear J.-

One possible reason for your pelvic pain is that you may have a misaligned pubic symphisis (the juncture of the pubic bone). Possibly this occured during your first birth and may have contributed to the difficult birth then was reawakened during this 2nd birth.
I have seen this happen in some of my moms with difficult births and have advised that they get the bone alignment corrected at their chiropractor, which will help with the muscle pain. If you don't have a chiro, the one at my office does this work.
