Potty Training - Evansville, IN

I have an 18-month-old that is potty training. He is doing a wonderful job. He pees and poops in the big toilet, and stays dry in his pull-up for more that two hours at a time. The only problem is when he pees, it goes either between the seat and the toilet or right over the seat! It is a very big mess and sometimes I even get peed on. Help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, everyone for all of your advice. Aidan hasn't peed in his pants for two weeks now and is now in underwear. What a big boy!

Hi! I have one of those cushioned potty seats that fit onto the toilet. You know those catchers that go on potty chairs to catch boys' pee? Well, if you can find one that comes out, they will actually fit into the crevices of the cushioned potty seat at the front where they can catch their pee. That's what I do. My boy now stands up, but for the longest time I would take him myself and stand behind him. I would put my legs against him to guide his body forward a little and then hold onto his shoulders with my hands so he didn't fall forward at all. Now, since he's used to that position, he goes by himself and leans forward while he stands at the toilet so that he's "aimed" at the water. I think it just takes learning the proper way to stand, so try doing the standing behind him to teach him the best way to do it. 18 months....you go girlie!

Hi there my sis in law told me that to help her lil man (he is 2) to get everything in the potty she would throw 2 or 3 cheerios in the potty and she would tell him to hit them and she sayes it works great and now he can do it without the cereal...

I found that just tucking it down doesn't always keep it from making a mess. Especially from it going between the actual toilet and the seat (I even had the little seat with pee guard to put over the big seat and it would still occassionally make a mess). My husband started taking a small wadded up piece of toilet paper and tucking it in there too, and it stopped that from happening. It helped absorb anything from going up or out and helped hold it down too. Then when the boys were done, they would push the paper down down and that meant they were done. BUT, have the paper in your hand and ready to tuck it in BEFORE you sit him on the potty otherwise while you have your attention on getting the paper ready, he may start pottying, and it never failed I was always the target then.

I have the same problem with my 2 year old son when he sits on his potty. But now I can try to tuck his pee pee more into the potty so it will have a chance to get in there, but it usually goes right over. So that's the only suggestion that people have told me is to try to tuck it down..good luck :)

I too trained my son early and it's wonderful freedom. That is, once the peeing through the seat situation is over. I finally put him on the toilet backwards facing the wall and he had more of the hole to aim into. That helped me. I wouldnt try to have him stand and aim since most public toilets are too high for him to reach on his own. Keep up the good work. You'll continue to have a few "surprises" but not having to buy diapers all the time sure helps during those times.

We used a combo of the previously mentioned suggestions. We would tell our son to lean forward and "tuck it in." He figured it out pretty quickly, but still makes a little mess sometimes when he's in a hurry or really tired.

How wonderful that your little one is doing so well potty training, how exciting!!
I used to work as a preschool teacher and I always found it easy to actually put something (that dissolves easily and is not so appelaing that the child wants to fish it out) in the bottom of the toilet bowl for boys so that way it helps them aim at something. I've used cheerios or really any cereal (again I would not recommend if your little one is crazy over them) or even little bits of the confetti soap (minimal pieces) from the dollar store. I think it helps to create a visual that might enable your son to better control where his "stream" goes.
I hope this helps at least a little bit.
On another note, you mentioned that you just started a home day care center. Not to sound too forward, but where are you located? I live in Bristol IN and am desperately looking for child care for my two year old daughter. Her grandmothers watch her right now, but I really want to help socialize her with other children (and it would really make it easier if I didn't have to feel so indebted all the time my mother and my husband's mother).
Thanks so much!!!

I was actually wondering how the home daycare is going? I am thinking about doing it myself and am really curious if it's going good for you. I'm a little nervous because I'm not real sure how to advertise for it.

The potty training news is great! I have custody of my twin grandchildren , just turned two. I have been working on potty training. We have the concept down pat and they tell us when they need to go, but mostly it is too late. But, what I was going to tell you is that, Corbin the little boy, holds his instrument down. I did not teach him that he just did it! Anyway is your daycare in Evansville? How many children do you have and what do you charge?

Great job!
