Potty Training Issues. How to Tell If It's a Health Issue

My almost 4 year old continues to have his ups and downs with Potty training. He can get caught up still in activities and still refuse to go from time to time.
I have rencently noticed that he can wet himself and seem not to notice until I question him if he's wet. It has happened so often, that I'm not sure that he has the control over it he should. I'm trying to get him into to see the doctor this week, but does anyone have advice on the signs if it's more than a "refusal to comply to going potty on the toliet"? He still only has a BM on the toilet when I tell him to go. I have a 16 month old as well, so I'm not sure if he's imitating the fact that she can go in a diaper, so that's his out.

What can I do next?

My daughter was 3 when my son was born, she was trained and went back to diapers. My ped says that being trained will come naturally by the time they enter school. My kids have sensory issues, im having the same problem with my son, he will be 4 in March. He will say he has to go sometimes but mostly he doesnt, he will nly tell me if he poops but not before he sits in it for awhle, i ususlly catch first wind of it though. Its hard to say if theres a biological cause for it. My 9 yr old wets the bed and he will get sudden urges when he cant wait to go, weve had blood, rines tests and other testing done and nothing showed up.

He probably knows he wets himself just doesnt want to inform you.I dont know how your reaction is to him,but if its anything but calm, comforting and reasurring he isn't going to comply well.Does he wear underware or are you still letting him wear something like a pullup? It is also possible that he is copying his sister, possibly even misses the attention he use to get before her and may be doing it to put the focus back on him.Try to encourage him a little more...like getting him a step stool and telling him you'll need his big boy help to show his sister how to do it when she is ready.Maybe if he feels important and needed he will make more of an effort to get to the potty. My son is almost 5 come march and he still has his accidents from holding it and waiting until it he damps his underware to decide to go.I plan on also having that looked at next time he see's his doctor.

dear A.
you might be right about your son imitating the baby since he does not have an older sibling. I suggest you keep encouraging him to go like dad because he is a big boy, you can still talk to the doctor, read potty books and videos are very helpful and your 16 m will benefit too. My son started to follow daddy to the potty by himself at 2 1/2 and is completely trained now at 3,he is the youngest I guess he just imitates everybody sometimes he runs to the bathroom with me and after me without even going he was cute and funny. it is true that they learn mostly from us. I hope things change for your family let us know

I had the same problem with my son. He got so caught up in what he was doing he would forget to go to the bathroom and then didnt want to tell me bc he didnt want to have to stop what he was doing to change. He thought he was going to miss something. I just started asking him about every 20-25 mins if he had to go and then would walk him to the bathroom and tell him he could go back to what he was doing as soon as he went potty. It took a couple of months but he learned and we havent had the problem since. Good luck and God bless.
