Pregnancy Gain Weight Question

In the first 24 weeks of my pregnancy I gained about 20 lbs and my doctor said it was not really ok, I should have gained less, but in the last 4 week I gained almost no weight. I was 137 lbs before getting pregnant and I have been 157-158 lbs for the past 4 weeks. I had a bad cold lasting for more than a week and I could not eat that much, but other than that I eat normally, maybe a bit less than in the first trimester when I used to eat salty crackers or chips to help alleviate my all day long morning sickness. Should I be concerned? I'll have an OB appointment shortly but just wondering whether any of you has experienced this? Thanks.

What can I do next?

Eat what you wanna eat. Pregnancy is the time to do so enough other things will get you down, don't add a diet to the mix.

20 lbs at 24 wks is only a tiny bit over "ideal" range and 20 lbs at 28 wks is great. I would not be worried at all, as long as u feel baby move, had a good ultrasound and passed diabetes test. Enjoy!!

I gained 50 lbs with my pregnancy, I was sick each and every day at least once, most of the time 2-3 times. I'd take the pill to help with the morning sickness and puke it up. I'd eat oatmeal for breakfast and puke it up. I would drink a Braums chocolate malt and puke it up.

My doc figured it was okay because I wasn't keeping much down. I did swell some but the doc didn't do anything about it.

As soon as I had the baby I weighed 30lbs less. The doc said he figured it was all in the uterus because I only gained weight in that area and not in my arms, legs, face, etc...

My ex MIL was 6'2" and was the tiniest bit overweight. She wore a size 14-16 pant. She would eat crackers and drink water in the evenings to fill her up but not give many calories. The doc told her that was very bad for her, crackers are full of salt even if the tops are not salted so they'll make you gain water weight and they are just not healthy. So try to find something else that is low sodium all the way.

I gained close to 70 pounds with my son. I had finally got back to my pre baby weight when BAM pregnant lol. I only gained 30 pounds that time, and considering my daughter was over 10 pounds. It only took a few months to lose the last bit.

The whole how much to gain during pregnancy is never ending. Everyone is different and everyone gains a different amount. As long as you and your baby are healthy there's nothing to worry about. Weight gain should be the last thing on your mind. I am 5.4 and was 138 when I got pregnant and gained 37lbs. I have friends who've gained 50-60lbs and are the same height as me and have been fine. Just make sure you are eating healthy, protein, fruits, and veggies and the occasional ice cream or treat doesn't matter. Never ever diet while pregnant! The whole 25-35 weight gain is more of a guide instead of a strict rule. You gain what you gain, and it's nothing to stress over.

The truth is that doctors are still debating what is and is not appropriate weight gain in pregnancy. It sounds to me like you are doing just fine. Woman who start out smaller tend to gain more than women who start their pregnancy at a higher than ideal weight. And although the pregnancy books may say you will gain X pounds per week or whatever, this is based on averages, everyone is different. Just try to relax about it, Don't even weigh yourself at home, just at doctor visits. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy, your precious baby will be here before you know it!

During my first pregnancy with triplets, I gained a total of 10 pound. I was supposed to gain anywhere from 35 to 50. They watched the baby growth. My second I gained 8 pounds, third, only 7. But all babies were born healthy. Just be sure to eat healthy when you can.

How tall are you? If you were tall then at 137 lbs, you need to gain about 30 lbs, possibly 35 lbs. I gained 25 lbs for my entire pregnancy and I was average weight. They told me I should gain 25 and that's how it worked out. If you are average or overweight, then start working out and eating better because even if you nurse, you will be full of stretch marks (I didnt get any) and it will be hard to lose the weight.

I think you are fine based on your pre-pregnancy weight. Just watch the empty carbs and juices and you should be fine.

Your doctor will want to monitor your weight gain. Make sure you are eating healthy food, getting fruits, veggies, protein and calcium. Keep the sugar down.

I did have trouble eating in my second pregnancy. I had only gained 20 pounds at week 27 and the doctor didn't like it. He wanted one pound a week. I just had a terrible time eating. I gained 5 pounds the last week, and thought he'd be happy, but it was water gain and he told me that I was water-logged. That's something you have to worry about because of pre-eclapsia. So I had to go in every day to get my blood pressure checked.

Make sure you are getting plenty of water. It's important for your blood pressure and for not going into early labor to not be dehydrated.

Glad you have an appointment coming up. Talk it through with your doctor.

Good luck!
Dawn
