I just took a pregnancy test and found out I am pregnant. My husband lost his job over a year ago and well decided cobra insurance was way to expensive and that we didn't need insurance right now........I didn't agree and was very furious but luckly we didn't need it until now. We have 2 year old twins and I know some of you are going to think we are crazy with no insurance.......my husband and I have had many fights over this! We do not qualify for any assitance because we have to many assets.......does anybody know of any insurance companies that I could get being that I am already pregnant. I am trying not to get to stressed out about this but it really worries me!

Thanks

no need to worry....with no job you can get mediacaid for you and it will cover you until after the baby is born. It will cover the baby too.

You need to apply for medicaid for your pregnancy. Your house and one car does not count against you for pregnancy medicaid. However, if you have a very expensive second car it might. My advice in that case would be to trade in the expensive one for something less, as your prenatal health and that of your baby is more important. Contact a local health and human services office and they expedite things for pregnancy. Also, if your income is low, contact your local WIC office for assistance with food necessities (eggs, milk, peanut butter, cheese, etc..)for yourself during pregnancy and your twins. They will also provide the services for you while you breastfeed or pay for the very expensive formula if you go that route. Best of luck to your family during this time!

You can get your kids on the CHIPS program. This would be for the children you already have so that they have some coverage. And get yourself on Medicaid so that you and your baby are covered during your pregnancy. Look into all the public assistance you can get so that you and your baby are healthy.

Talk to the hospital and to your doctor. The hospital will work out a payment plan for you. My friend did this and they started paying a little bit each month of the pregnancy and it was a lot cheaper than for me - who had insurance. They will work with you. But, go to them NOW. By the time they had the baby, it was pretty much paid off. They will work under the assumption that it will be a normal delivery. Then, if not, they will work with you on a payment plan for the difference.

Medicaid should be able to help you out. Money comes out of every paycheck to them, it is not fair you might not be able to use it. If you have too many assets then just don't mention them. Same with WIC. I never used my income to apply, I just used my husbands and told them I didn't work, or vice versa. You could be a single mom, they don't know. Just use your income. It's not fair that you pay for this stuff and then you have to qualify for it. I was also told Medicaid won't deny a pregnant woman but I don't know this for sure.
Don't feel bad you don't have insurance. There is nothing wrong with not having insurance. We pay almost $400 a month for the past 5 years and we all go to the doctor once a year in this family. We are not a sickly family, anyway can you imagaine how much money we have given them and just used a fraction of it? We are better off saving that money in our own account every month and just pay cash at the doctors. So that is what we do now.

L.,

Have you tried applying for Medicaid? Although you may normally not qualify for assitance, due to your circumstances, they may be able to help.

also another source you can go through is CARELINK through the University Health Care system.

A lot of people qualify for medicaid when pregnant or carelink when they thought they wouldn't.

Dial 211 for an application to be mailed to you for the pregnancy (the worst they can do is say no). Ask for the Carelink number and ask if 211 has any other resources available to you.

hope this helps

Hi L.,

Here is a little advice, but I just moved here from PA so you will have to double check before you jump on it. We were not elligible for assistance in PA, but when I got pregnant, myself and the baby were elligible, not the whole family. It may be the same down here for you guys. Also Blue Cross/Blue Shield offers some lower cost plans around $400/month for your family. I sold insurance while we lived in PA, but am not licensed in TX so I'm not positive about the plans down here.

You can also call an agent in the phone book who deals with multiple insurance companies. Your best bet may be to insure yourself and the baby on a different plan than the family that may be cheeper for you.

A word of caution, read the fine print on any plan you purchase, if you need help let me know. Some insurance plans only cover natural deliveries, so if you had major complications or any complications they wouldn't be covered.

You can also call the hospital and see if they have any recommendations. In PA we had a help line at the hospital that would direct you to agents and such that they recommended.

I hope this helps and if you have any questions, feel free to contact me. When we lost all of our insurance after I lost my job my husband went back on Active Duty with the military. This may not be an option for you, but I wanted to throw that in the park as well. We have been very happy with his decision and they paid for everything with my 3 month old. It was really nice and now he is getting the training he needs to get a higher paying job when he is done.

Good luck and congratulations,
R.

I have been in this situation, without the pregnancy issue. We still do not have traditional health coverage because we are now self-employed. Regarding coverage for your children try the Texas Chips program; it is based on your income not your assets. For yourself if you cannot find any insurance coverage try the University Health System - Care Link program. It is better than no coverage. Most important stay focus and know this is just a season and it to shall past.
