Hi Moms,

We just adopted our second dog and I need to put him on flea/tick meds... We've always used Frontline, but I keep hearing about Revolution because it's also a heartgard in it... Any input?

I've been using Trifexis for flea/heartworm. It has worked great, he had fleas when I got my dog and he didn't since right after the first treatment. I have heard they need to have a full belly though before they take it.

Revolution is great - but I use it for cats... if you can't find it, try advantix

According to my vet, Revolution is good for heartworms, but not very effective on fleas. He has stopped carrying it because so many clients complained about it.

I was going to ask this same question, LOL, but I also want to know where to buy it. I checked with some Vets around here and can't find one that sells it. So any Mpls/St. Paul mama's if you know of any, let me know.

My ex is a vet and that's what he uses and we use on our pets. It's been years since we used anything else, and I trust his judgement. We've never had a problem with fleas or ticks either. Some breeds of dogs can't be on it, so you'll need to ask your vet.

Yeah my vet stopped selling revolution too, I used it for years on my dogs and cats, but apparently they said it is not as effective as they once thought.
They gave me a new treat tasting pill which treats fleas ticks and heartworm, and it was much cheaper too. Can'r remember what it's called though!

ooh ooh - just read a post above - trifexis, that's the name lol

Revolution does not work on ticks if you have a problem with ticks. It does do heartworm disease, some vet's trust it for heartworm prevention and some do not. The may reason some do not is it has to be applied correctly and not washing the pet around application so that it is effective. It can be easier to give a pill for heartworm prevention that you know the pet got, but at the same time you still have to apply the flea and tick, so revolution is nice for two in one. I have know a few people who used it for dogs with no problems, but I have know it to be recommended a lot more and used a lot more in cats. Cats don't typically get heartworm prevention, so it is great for them since they should be one it too- you can't treat heartworms in a cat. Ask your vet for their recommendation to see which product they think gives the best results.

I just went out and looked at my box of revolution and it DOES work on the american dog tick - which is the most common tick that dogs and cats get. it also works on fleas, heartworms, ear mites, sarcoptic mange, and the forementioned tick. your vet will want to do a heartworm test before putting your dog on it. frontline stopped working for our dog and before we could switch the vet did a test and our dog had heartworm. we never would have known otherwise. they caught it early and she is fine now.
