I live in the Johnson County area and am looking for a really good dermatologist. I don't care how far I have to travel as long as they're good. The main reason I am looking to see one is to have some moles removed. If anyone has had any good experiences, please let me know. Thank you!!

What can I do next?

I highly recommend Dr. Amanda Tausher with Johnson county dermatology in Olathe or Elizabeth Spenceri she had an office near OP regional. Last year I had a mole removed that ended up being melanoma, Dr Tausher diagnosed it and Dr Spenceri removed it and I am very satisfied with the care I recieved and the scar that is left. Good Luck!

Hi S.,
I LOVE my dermatologist and have had several moles removed by him. David M. O'Connell at Dermatology Consultants Midwest, 5000 W. 95th Street, Suite 170, PV. ###-###-####. (It's basically 95th and Nall). He's very professional but also has a great sense of humor. For the most part, I have no scarring anywhere and have had 7 moles removed in a few different visits. Let me know if you have additional questions. They do accept several types of insurance or I'm sure would work with you if you are self-pay. Good luck!

Hello,

I know that my family goes to a Dr. Kaplan out in your area, my sister goes to him for mole removal. Another one that is very hard to get into is Dr. Mark McCune.....good luck

Dr. James San Filipo with Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center. I see him in the Lee's Summit office but they also have an office in Leawood. I just went to him a few months ago for a mole check.

I had malignant melanoma in 2000 and regularly get skin checks for suspicious moles. The doc I saw when I was diagnosed was Dr. Matthew Buxton, he used to be off Quivira Rd and 106th but I believe he left that practice and last I heard he was in Lawrence I think. He was a great doc too if you could track him down, I felt very comfortable with him too. Good luck!

I asked my OB/GYN the same question and she referred me to Angela Bosch, a Physician's Assistant (NOT a dermatologist) who is excellent. If your problem requires an MD, then you see one. I went to her to have her look at all the bumps, moles, freckles, etc, on my body to make sure none of them were cancerous or weird. She was clearly knowledgable and I was very satisfied. Her phone number is ###-###-####. The office is on the 2d floor at 11550 Granada, which is off of 115th & Roe.

I edited this response because someone mentioned Dr. McCune. I have been seeing Dr. McCune for cosmetic treatments (I admit it!) for a few months. You notice, when I had a medical issue, I looked elsewhere. I have very mixed feelings about Dr. McCune and in the interest of full information for S., here's my experience:

Dr. McCune is charming, smart and has great bedside manner. He is also methodical and precise with drug applications, and keeps excellent documentation, which is good because he sees so many patients he'd never be able to keep it straight from appointment to appointment otherwise.

That's the good. Here's the rest of it: Dr. McCune has too much patient traffic to EVER be on time, or for me to feel I have his full attention. The ONLY time I felt I had his full attention was our first visit, where he was answering my questions about a very expensive treatment called Fraxile, which is supposed to do something about the little pucker lines above your lip (my eye goes right to these every time I look in the mirror and I have long wanted them gone). I have often thought about his generousity of time when he was clinching the sale, compared to how rushed he seems the rest of the time.

I have never waited less than half an hour for my appointment, and I have occasionally been kept waiting an hour and a half. I have walked out of the office because I've waited so long that to stay would have cost me some other planned activity. I have had to wait a month to reschedule. I feel they should deduct gasoline.

When Dr. McCune finally sees you, you have the feeling he's got one foot out the door to the next appointment. In fact, sometimes he does. Here is an example. I wanted to ask him about retinol because I am starting to get small lines around my eyes. He literally shoved a three-page typed list of treatments and prices into my hands, and walked out, no discussion, no nothing. He did send in a product line sales girl to talk to me, but she was trained only on that particular product, and could not tell me anything about other products, nor could she answer my questions about the difference between Retin A, Renova and Tretinoin (not sure I got all the names right), etc.

I'm sure it's expensive for Dr. McCune to run his office - he offers all the latest cosmetic procedures like thermage, fraxile, and other laser treatments. All these require him to purchase very expensive equipment, and I'm guessing that's the reason he's not ready to share his income with another doc. But he would be well-served to bring someone into the office with him to help service his patients. I have never once been in the waiting area without overhearing the receptionist trying to calm or soothe a patient who had a bad experience due to trying to service too many patients.

So... there's the good and bad of it. I would not go to him for moles. But he happens to be the only doctor in town who offers the fraxile treatment, so... I put up with it. By the way, the fraxile treatment doesn't really deliver very well. I did get some minor result, but I'll end up putting up with the lines or filling them (an idea I hate because you have to redo it every few months at great expense)...
