Sinus Infection While Pregnant

I am currently 19 weeks pregnant and I have a horrible sinus infection. I used to be on prescription medicine and nose spray for my sinus problems but I had to stop taking those when I found out I was pregnant. My sinus infection is so bad that my nose is bleeding and I can't breathe or sleep at night. My sinuses are running down the back of my throat and causing me to have a sore throat and run a fever.
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions to safely deal with these sinus problems while I am pregnant. My doctor told me to put a hot air humidifier in my room and use some saline nose spray. None of that has helped so far.

What can I do next?

I am 20 weeks prego and just got over a sinus problem. My doctor has always said that sudafed (original recipe, not sure about the new PE stuff) and robitussin products are safe during pregnancy, as is Benadryl, but that may dry you out and make your nose bleed more. Keep on eye on that fever, if it gets high (like over 102) make sure you see your doc. I hope you feel better soon!

Hi A.,

I went thru a similar situation when I was pregnant. I agree with the other posters, plain Sudafed, Robitussin, and Benadryl were all on my safe lists of meds to take. Also, maybe try vicks, it always helps me. Good luck and I hope this helps!

Consult with your doctor. I have bad asthma and had to stay on my meds (they were a category C drug) because other meds didn't work and I got very sick. I also had a sinus infection or 2 and could take anti biotics while sick. You should check with your dr. or specialist about meds. If you are not breathing properly and getting enough oxygen neither is the little bundle inside and you need your rest so that baby can grow.

Are you sure it is a sinus infection and not allergies? I would consult my doctor.

I think you can take Sudafed, but I'm not 100% sure on that one. I know they discourage lots of medicines because of the ingredients. There are also medicines that are safe to take a different stages of your pregnancy. Look online and possibly call your doctor back. The saline and humidifier will help with the nose bleeds, but not much else. I think you can use Vick's Rub on your chest, but again, I'm not positive. Sitting in a warm shower or steamy room may help too. I had a terrible sinus thing the whole time I was pregnant, so I know how you feel. There was absolutely nothing I could do except tough it out. Hopefully you can get some relief soon!
