Sorry I'm Impatient...What Does Blood in Urine Mean?

I posted a question last night about a possible UTI/Kidney Infection. I filled in the rest of the story over there, but basically they gave me 2 scripts at urgent care today, sent my urine for culture, and said that I had blood in my urine.

I'm just wondering if any of you know if that could indicate anything serious? If so, I've had blood in my urine for somewhere around 2 months now. ...and my doctor is not doing anything about it. I love how chill he is being about my KIDNEYS. Am I over reacting? I mean, do I need to push him to do more or just go with what he's saying?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, everyone. I will just wait and see. I'm not going to yell at anyone. I am a big mouth sometimes, but I'm not rude :p I am the nicest big mouth you will ever meet. I didn't go sooner because I haven't had enough money for that. I needed them to bill me the last time I went, a few weeks ago, and I still haven't been able to pay the first bill. So, I didn't want to go again and have to ask them to bill me, again. It's embarrassing. I was just hoping and praying that it wasn't really anything, and I wasn't willing to spend the money unless I knew for a fact that it was really something.

Blood in the urine can be serious but it is most likely not as long as you get treatment. I urge you to ask your doctor about possible causes and about his treatment of it. It may be that the blood is caused by an infection and the doctor is treating it with antibiotics. What are the prescriptions? They may be treatment for the cause of the blood in your urine.

No need for a second opinion until you get all the information from the first doctor.

I went back and read your SWH from the other question. Yes, you're impatient. The doctor has to wait for the culture to come back so he has a better idea of what kind of an infection that you have. The Urgent Care doctor must've referred you to your own doctor who will take a look at the results and talk with you. No need to get anxious at this point. You've taken the first step. Now you just have to wait. Make an appointment to see your regular doctor to discuss this. No need to yell and scream at him. Ask questions and wait to get answers.

Stop trying to be your own doctor. You waited too long to see a doctor a couple of months ago and you waited a couple of weeks more after your antibiotics were completed and you still had symptoms. Your doctor cannot figure this out without your co-operation. When you wait to make an appointment he has the impression that your symptoms aren't as severe as the way you've described them here. Why would you wait 2 weeks if you really did have symptoms? Your infection must not be so serious or you would've called sooner. I suggest that is the way his mind may be working perhaps unconsciously. You are making it difficult for the doctor to stay on top of this.

And....you said you drank wine. Wine would be irritating to your urinary tract and cause pain when you already have an infection. As Julie K. said no alcohol, coffee, soda or tea. Stick with water and "real" cranberry juice.

I have a history of kidney stones, and I almost answered your other post. But then I noticed it had been 12 hours since you posted it, so I didn't.

Your symptoms sounded to me like a kidney stone - back pain and blood in your urine are common with a stone. That's probably why there was talk of images (x-rays). The fact that your urine was sent to be cultured makes probably means the ER doctor things it's a kidney infection and not a kidney stone. I think an infection can cause back pain, also.

Either way, unless the pain becomes unbearable, you're really ok waiting a couple of days. See what your doctor says. He/she might refer you to a urologist, just to be safe. This would be a good thing. You could even mention that to your doctor.

The good news about kidney stones and kidney infections is that they are very common and easily treatable.

Try not to worry. You will have answers soon.

ETA - I just read the posts that came after mine, and please do not worry. Your doctor isn't doing nothing. Your doctor gave you an antibiotic and pain meds and ordered a urine culture. If he was really concerned about something more serious than he would have ordered some other tests. He is doing something. Waiting is torturous, but at the moment that's all you can do. Hang in there!!!

Bladder infection, kidney infection, kidney stones... could be a number of things. Your Dr. is probably ordering tests to confirm or rule out underlying causes. Take the meds, wait for the tests and go from there. It could be a big deal or not one at all. Your Dr. seems to be doing the right thing so far.

ETA: After reading your other post, it does sound like a kidney infection. If untreated it can be serious, but it sounds like you're on antibiotics again and that should help. 5 days of antibiotics doesn't sound like long enough to me, and maybe it didn't get rid of it completely the first time and that's why you are noticing the same symptoms again.
Also, cranberry juice can be good for flushing kidneys, but only if it's real cranberry juice and not the Oceanspray stuff. It's loaded with sugar. Drink lots and lots of water. No alcohol, no coffee, soda or tea... water.
Good luck~

First thing I think of with blood in the urine is a bladder infection gone bad - and migrated up to the kidneys.

Next thing? Kidney stones.

If your doctor isn't doing anything about blood in your urine? I think you need to find a new doctor. I would PUSH. And push HARD.

Blood in urine means kidney infection. What kind of doctor ignores blood in urine? Yes, push him until you are treated.

But... your doctor isn't "doing nothing." What can he do if you're not going to the office for him to examine even if the reason is because you don't want to be billed?

You waited a full month having UTI/bladder infection symptoms before you brought yourself to the doctor at which point he gave you an antibiotic. It was probably a high dosage antibiotic like a Z-Pack if it was five days. Those are pretty powerful and they stay in your system for several days after you take them. It's typical to still feel symptoms when you finish a Z-Pack and have a doctor say, "Wait 3-5 days and see how you feel then."

When you finally did call the doctor back after two more weeks, he urged you to go to urgent care. That's not "being chill." But how did you want him to react? To sound worried and panicked? Because medical professionals are not supposed to let on when they're worried or anxious about a patient because a major part of their job is to keep the patient calm and not panic the patient. When you keep a cool head you're more likely to remember and do what the doctor requests of you. A doctor that's panicked and sounding worried is not going to be taken seriously. Right?

So you did what he prescribed... you went to urgent care and they gave you two prescriptions and sent your urine in for a culture test. They'll be able to do it much more quickly than if you had waited for your doctor to see you in the office today since you spoke with him at 4 AM. And by the way, he showed incredible concern by calling you at 4 AM.

He sounds like a great doctor. He's just working with what you've been giving him, so give the guy a break for now. I hope you feel better soon.

Not to freak you out but my MIL thought she had a bladder infection but never had a fever. She had blood in her urine but no bacteria so they sent her to a urologist who did a scan and found an ovarian mass (tumor). Don't wait and yes over react if your dr. isn't doing anything.
