Hello all, I have an almost 20mo. old girl that has a vocabulary of about 5 - 10 words . I'm not too concerned about it she seems fine with everything else. My dr. is recommending a hearing evaluation and some speech therapy. Does anyone have any recommendations in the near west suburbs? Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

Hi A.! I used to work at a wonderful agency called Helping Hand and they have a great Children's Services Program. The website is www.hhrehab.org/childservices. It's in Countryside on 55th and East Ave. (just east of LaGrange Rd.). They have great speech therapists and an Early Intervention Program and Pre-School Prep program that has a speech therapist, as well as a developmental therapist. They are wonderful people and it's very much worth the trip from the Oakbrook area - they get a lot of clients from that region. You can call Carol Boyke at ###-###-#### to ask about the program. I've seen so many children go for therapies at Helping Hand and leave the program with so much progress. Best of luck! ~A.

I would contact Early Intervention so that they can do an evaluation; however, the wait list for a Speech Therapist can be long. We got lucky when my children were evaluated and got started right away. Both of our Speech Therapists are from Oak Leyen and are very good. If your insurance covers it, you may want to contact them directly. Your pediatrician may have to write up a prescription for the services - that should help get it covered under your health insurance.

My son goes to Paulsen Pediatric rehab in Hinsdale. It's at York and Ogden. He sees a therapist named Maureen, I really like her. Another place I like is Milestones for Kids Sucess in Downers Grove. It's near Butterfield and Finley across from the Kohls. You could also have her tested through early intervention services which are free your pediatrician should be able to tell you more about that.

Best Wishes!

Ditto on what the two pp said. Your best bet is to refer is to have her evaluated through Early Intervention. The evaluation is paid for by the state(often insurance will not pay for evaluations or speech therapy for that matter). If you are in DuPage County the number is ###-###-####. Otherwise follow the link the poster gave you for your county(I forget which Oak Brook is in). The other upside is that the therapists will do the evaluation in your home.

I am an occupational therapist who has worked in that area...unless you want to use your insurance or pay privately, it is probably best to go through the early intervention system. Early intervention will bill your insurance first but if your insurance denies or won't pick up all of it the state picks up the rest through E.I. You would call provider connections...you can put that in a search to get the phone number, and they would set up an evaluation to see if your child needs speech therapy. Otherwise, if you want to pay privately or use your insurance, there is a great clinic called milestones for kids success..they are still manndated to tell you about early intervetion, but you can choose to elect out of it...it is a great clinic located at finly and 355. If your dr. is recommending that your child be evaluated, the dr. should also be able to put you in touch with the early intervention system.

You want to find an early intervention program. We used child and family connections out of Lombard. They came to our house twice per week. They are wonderful! Here's the link to the page with all of the numbers. Good luck. Email me if you need anything!

I took my son to Communication Clubhouse in Downer's Grove and they have some excellent speech therapists. They also have some group classes that will help with following directions, social skills, etc.

Hi Amy.
For children under 3 - you can seek evaluation thru Child and Family Connections of DuPage. This is a state driven program for early intervention. You are assigned a coordinator and all testing is done at the home. Yes, hearing test is a must. We did our son's test in Villa Park Easter Seals. My son failed every test (except for the hearing test) and received services at home 2x weekly for speech until his 3rd birthday. We contributed a monthly fee based on our income and size of family. I believe they are headquartered in Lombard.
Good luck!

After reading the other suggestions, I would contact Early Intervention. I have a now 3 year old boy who was in Early intervention since he was 10 weeks or so. Now he is in the preschool program for the school district. He doesn't talk much either. I did go to West Suburban Speech Clinic for a couple of session in July and August, until he started the preschool. It is a private therapy, but very good with him. Hope you get some help soon.

Hi! I am a speech-language pathologist. Unfortunately, I do not live or work in the oakbrook area. I agree with the suggestions that the previous mom's have stated. It would be the best to get your daughter evaluated for speech and language through the early intervention system. Especially since she currently has a vocabulary of 5-10 words. It seems like her understanding of language is great, which is wonderful.

If she qualifies through the early intervention system, then she would receive speech therapy once or twice a week for an hour at your house. The therapist can also give you and your family suggestions to work on your daughter's speech at home too. Speech therapy is either covered by insurance or the state. Below is the office that you would contact that services Oak Park, Illinois. I hope that this information is helpful. Best of luck with what you decide to do.

Contact Early Intervention. They will set you up with a speech therapist that will come to your home. I use this for my 2 year old son. The charge is based on your income.
