Star Wars for a 4 Year Old? Other Space Movies?

My husband and I disagree - should a four year old watch Star Wars (the original movie). He has been building "space ships" with his legos and knows the names of some Star Wars characters. I suggested that we find another space related movie that is age appropriate, and rated G. Any feelings on the original movie or suggestions for a space-y movie?

What can I do next?

I don't think that Star Wars (esp. the original) is that bad. My daughter watched it at about that age and she loved it. It's really up to you as to what you want your children watching. There is the movie "Muppets in Space" (if you're looking for a more kid-oriented movie,

No. It is not a children's film. Go to common sense media http://www.commonsensemedia.org/ to help you make a better choice.

My son has watched these since he was 3 and LOVES them. The same with my neighbor. My son even has some of the figures and 2 light sabers. The movies aren't really that bad. There's no fowl language. Other then the blowing each other up. But honestly, they have done studies on boys that show even in boys who are never given guns or shown what guns are about, they still turn sticks and things into swords and guns anyway. But read this. It is the parental guide from IMDB about the movie. And all the movies are the same as this.

He can hear and see worse then this watching the news.

My daughter is five and loves the Star Wars movies, she has watched all them new and old. The original Star Wars is the best one. Sit and watch it with him if you're worried he'll be scared or something There really isn't anything inappropriate for a four year old in it.

Try showing him Toy Story. Maybe he will like Buzz Lightyear. I think star wars is a little old for him. Darth Vader and the storm troopers used to give me nightmares when I was a kid. And the violence is not good to start with so early.
Take a look at this study done by the American Psychological Association. Scary to think about:

I was 7 and my little brother 3 when the original Star Wars came out. Well my little brother loved it. To this day he still loves Star Wars. I remember us as kids playing make believe and everyone wanting to be Luke and Han so they could rescue the princess.

I really don't think the original star wars movies are that bad....my older kids didn't watch them but they are now 9,7,and 6...so my little guys 4 and 2...do see them(not that the 2 year old cares about tv) and they make these cute little action figures for ages 3-8 of all the characters and all 5 of my boys love to play with them...is there a space muppet movie? and what about the toy story movies? the new Wall-E?(we never saw that)...although I would check out the library and the other ladies gave you websites...all in all I would let the husband win this one and hold out for something else and then you can say...I let you have star wars...now I get my way :)
