Ever since having my daughter I have had pain in my lower back and tail bone. It hurts to sit and it hurts to stand. It feels like my tailbone is broken. I told my OB about it and without looking in to it he said it was a pinched nerve and to do certain exercises. I did exactly as he said and it hasn't gotten any better it actually has gotten worse! When sitting I try to sit on my side but even that hurts now. It's hard to get active because of it, and now I have gain quite a bit of weight. My daughter has just turned nine months old. NINE MONTHS of this pain!!! Is there anyone out there that has had or has the same pain? If you need more detail about the pain let me know. I just wonder what is causing it, how long I'm gonna have it and what I could or should do to correct it. Thanks

What can I do next?

I would definatly go see a chiropractor. After I had my daughter I started to get pains so bad I couldn't walk, I went to the ER one night because of the pain, and they did nothing. My stepdad took me to his chiropractor and he fixed it up with that one visit, he did tell me to do exercises for a few weeks, but I could actually walk, sit, and go back to normal activity. He said my hips were out of adjustment from having my daughter.

I can't spell this to save my life, but it sounds like a ciatic nerve that is pinched. You should go to a chiropractor. I have dealt with that with my last two daughters. There are machines that chiro's have that deliver electrical impulses and those always seemed to help me along with adjustments from the chiropractor. Usually after a month of seeing the chiropractor I was all better. Hope this helps.

sounds like a siatic nerve pinch i may have spelled that wrong i am sorry i also gained tons after my son because the siatic nerve was pinched the pain does eventually go away as your body heals however the more weight you gain the more preasure on the siatic nerve (tail bone area) ask your regular doctor and your ob to speak with each other for optimal treatment please let us know what you find as helpful and gives you relief as many moms are in this position

just curious..did you have the epi? I went thru this after both my kids at the same age...and my Dr said that she thinks it was b/c of the epi...mine hurt mostly in the sciotic (msp) area! My pt had me stretch my back several times a day...it hurt so bad at first but got better each day. Side note, I was also nursing still and had to adjust my hold during this time as well ::hugz::

Try a chiropractor. They are really good at finding the problem and helping to fix it. I know a few REALLY GREAT ones, if you need a referral. I work for a law firm and we refer our auto accident clients to these offices every day, and use them ourselves on occasion.
Let me know if you need some names. Good luck.

M., you need to go to your primary care physican and have x-rays or possibly CT scans done. I would NOT go to a chiropractor-- no offense to those who suggested it.
You want a solid diagnosis before going to a chiropractor.
You could have, as you suggested, a fractured coccyx (tailbone). Or, you could have a herniated or slipped disc in the lower spine could be putting pressure on the sciatic nerve-- though usually, that would also be felt mostly in the thighs and sometimes further down the leg, which you didn't mention. You also could possibly have some compressed discs or a spinal infection. The truth is, you don't know. And you need a good and thorough examination and some x-rays to know for sure.
"Chiropractor" and "back pain" do not automatically go together. There are some conditions that a chiropractor shouldn't touch. And unfortunately, not all chiropractors take x-rays. You don't want to walk into an office with a fractured coccyx or compressesed spinal cord and have a chiropractor start doing manipulations, you could end up in an ER.
Once you have a solid diagnosis, THEN you could certainly
seek out chiropractic care if it's something that would help whatever your condition is.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
T.

M. O,
You need to go to another doctor and inform them of your pain. You possibly could have something dislocated. I've heard some women have actually done that during delivery. Even if it's for a peice of mind, you really should get a second opinion.
Good Luck!

I have lower back pain that comes and goes, and it was particularly bad last week (thankfully feels better right now). Many times when I wake up in the morning it's at it's worst. With my husband having had two back surgeries for herniated discs, a lot of my symptoms seems like what he had (minus pain in the legs). I think what happened is the anesthesiologist performing the epidural during my second childbirth experience damaged a disc, because it all started after my second childbirth.

I honestly would not start out with a Chiropractor. They can do a lot of harm if you are not diagnosed properly. I would go to a Pain Management Specialist and have them run an MRI of your pelvis and hips. My husband went to aChiropractor and Physical Therapist (which made him worse). He also saw Orthopedic Surgeons and a Neurologist. It ended up being a Pain Management Specialist who diagnosed him correctly.

Good luck to you, and keep us posted!

Try a Chiropractor, I fell when I was little and basically bent my tailbone upwards instead of breaking it. After losing close to 45 pounds and a lot of the muscle mass on my tush, I had this burning sensation in my tailbone area. My Dr. didn’t know what it was. After x-rays and sonograms and nothing out of the ordinary… It hurt to sit for any long period of time. Shooting pains down my legs; can’t walk for very long either! I went to a Chiropractor. I also have Bursitis in my left hip joint which is also getting better now after being re-adjusted every 3 weeks… I used to have to sit on a donut at work to relieve the pain and stress on my back; I’m getting back to normal (kinda) ;)

M.,

I was still having quite a bit of lower back pain after delivering my son, so I took a friend's advice and went to see a chiropractor. I feel wonderful now. He said it is very common for women to have the back pain and pelvic pain afterwards. I don't know if it will work for you, but you might want to consider it!

Good luck,

J.

I completly understand your pain. i have had the same thing. i have been going to my chiro about every 2 weeks for over a year. it helps and the pain is getting less. but i also went to my md, making sure she knew i was seeing a chiro also. she gave me some muscle relaxers and stronger ibuprophin (sp). it has helped some. i ususlly spend my day laying on my couch with my feet up over the end. it has really helped me. my house may be a mess but it has helped the pain and i'm able to get up and do things once i have relaxed a bit. my girls love it 'cause they can curl up with me and cuddle more. I would realy get to a chiro and talk to your dr also. with some team work they should be able to help you. I have also found that just simply streching the muscles in my back has helped to relive some of the pain. hope you feel better soon.

hi M.,when i read your letter, i looked at my husband and said "does that not sound exactly like me?" with my last two pregnancies, i had excruciating pain in my hips and back. i complained enough that my doctor checked into it further. it's kinda funny what it actually was. first of all, i couldn't even get out bed in the morning without help, couldn't roll over in bed, couldn't hardly move it hurt so bad. i would almost fall down when i walked. i felt like a 90 year old woman with my husband helping me walk for the first hour upon awakening! when my hips spread to compensate for my growing belly and such, my hips had literally slipped out of place. most of the pain is directly on your tailbone area because that's where it all comes together. the only way to cure this is to lay down on the floor or a bed or some surface where somebody can look at you and tell if one of your legs looks longer than the other. i know that sounds goofy, but i swear, that's how we discovered mine! SLOWLY have someone pull on your leg and you can tell it's working. it's instant relief when you get up. i later discovered that i also have arthritis in my back and hip area. that did not help the cause. if you do this leg pull like once a week it will eventually go away. unless there's other complications. mine i guess was from my hips spreading too far too fast. i really hope this helps you, i've been there, done that and it sucks bad. let me know! lots of love.

I highly recommend going to a pain center. I had developed chronic pain in my SI joints and hip joint after a horseback riding accident. It went on for almost a year and a half. At the Pain Center they did bloodwork and took a history and found out I have ankylosing spondylitis, a type of arthritis that is hereditary and was triggered by the accident. Maybe yours is unrelated to childbirth and caused by something else. I wouldn't rely on an OB to figure it out. Go to clinic that specializes in pain management. Good luck, I know how horrible it can be to try to keep up with the kids when you are in pain.

Sorry your pain is so bad. I had the pain for years after my oldest was born, I was in labor for two days and there was a lot of pressure on my tailbone. Maybe keep bugging your OB to look into it more, or get another opinion?

you are NOT alone! immediately after having my daughter i was in serious pain in my tailbone. not so much my lower back, but then again, the pain in my tailbone was sooooo bad that i couldn't feel anything else. was your daughter a big baby? my daughter had to be vaccumm extracted and she was so large that the vaccumm came off her head once and they had to re-apply it. they finally pulled her out of me, but in the process my tailbone broke. before i was even stitched up i told my doctor that my tailbone was killing me. he said that i may have broken or bruised it. i couldn't tell you if i had any other post birth pain because my tailbone was KILLING ME. i couldn't sit up to breast feed, i couldn't lay down, i could hardly walk. there was NO comfortable position. i totally understand where you are coming from. the next day when my doctor came in to see me i told him about how much pain i was in. the first thing he said to me was "your tailbone will take up to a year to heal, whatever you do DO NOT have surgery on it". i knew better than to have any surgery as my grandfather had tailbone surgery and he said that was the worst mistake he ever made. my doctor did say that tailbones take the longest to heal and not to do much activity. well, heck, that wasn't possible as every movement hurt.

so i would say to you, stop doing those exercises. listen to your body and whatever position (i know there aren't any) is the most comfortable try and stay in. riding in a car was a nightmare for me! i also had asked for one of the inner tubes to sit on, but the nurse said no because that would have seperated my tushy and cause my stitches to pull apart, but you are past all that so you might want to think about an inner tube to sit on for some relief.

my daughter is now 2 and to be honest with you, i didn't feel relief until she was one. also, to this day, when i sit too long in a hard chair, or a long ride in the car or when i do sit ups my tailbone will start to ache. NOTHING like what it use to feel like so i am happy to be to this point.

if you have any questions or want to discuss this anymore feel free to contact me. all i can say is try not to put any more trauma on your tailbone. any exercise will only aggrevate it even more.

I would definitely go see a chiropractor! Something might just be out of place, and they can help you get that taken care of. My chiro helped me get my hips back in line after my daughter was born!

Is it sciatica pain? You may want to forget the OB and go to your primary care physician, he/she may be more willing to listen to your concerns.

My mom broke her tailbone, I think giving birth to my oldest sister. This was over 50 yr ago, but she too was told it would get better. It was about 20 yr later a different dr told her it was broken and had to do surgery to fix it. I am no dr. and cannot say this is what you have, but certainly think pain lasting this long is a concern and you should see another dr, maybe an orthopedic dr for a second opinion. Dr. john Romito at the Quivera medical center is the best I have ever seen for knowing exactly what pains indicate what bone or muscle problems.
