Stomach Hurts During Workout

I am finding no matter what kind of workout I do (eliptical, running, weights, aerobics) my stomach hurts/burns after about an hour no matter if its a heavy or light workout. If I stop and rest, the burning goes away after about 15-20 mins. I tried eating before working out and not eating anything and it still happens. Does this happen to anyone? Any suggestions on what's going on?

So What Happened?

I figured out I needed just a bit of carbs in my stomach (piece of toast w/nothing on it or a handful of cheerios did the trick)- no fruit or anything acidic, and instead of guzzling water when I get thirsty, I'd sip water throughout my workout. I've been doing fine ever since. Thanks to all who responded.

Hi PS, I had the same thing happen to me and found out that my adrenals were run down completely and had to repair them and my body.

I have since then done that and have gone back to school to become a certified holistic health counselor. I work with clients on becoming healthy through nutrition and making simple lifestyle changes that impact your whole body. If you want any information or would like to talk my # is ###-###-####. I had a similar experience, but it was usually when I pushed myself too hard. I found that using a heart rate monitor (as well as keeping hydrated) helped.

In my experience, I found that if my heart rate went about 180 for more than a few minutes, I would have stomach cramps for the rest of the afternoon. If I kept my heart rate between 150 and 180, I would get a good work out without making myself sick. These are just the rates I found that worked for me. Yours may be different.

I'm sure hydration has a lot to do with it too. Good luck.

Hi PS, make sure that you don't have a hernia. I would go to the Doctor and make sure you are okay.

Good luck,

That use to happen to me then I figured out in my case, it was due to dehydration. You might try drinking more water to see if that's it.

Hi PS,
I agree with the hernia post. I had the same situation happen to me after giving birth to my daughter. When I exercised, or ever just stood for a long period of time, I would get burning cramps throughout my stomach/bowel area and down my legs. Turns out, the stress of delivery had caused a hernia to form and it was quickly diagnosed. One relatively easy surgery later and I'm all better. So, just to be on the safe side, check with your doctor. Hope you feel better soon.

Lots of good suggestions. Not so sure about the hernia---have had one and it hurt more than just exercising...mine hurt when going to bathroom and sneezing and laughing.

As a fitness instructor and trainer for 9 years, here's my suggestion:

Hydrate before working out---water, not juice or coffee....drink water during exercise---always!
no food before

Mix up your work-out. Sounds like you are doing the same thing for an hour according to what you wrote. Why not walk/jog for 20 min., then do some (15 - 20 min) abs or some weights, then 20 min. on elliptical and always stretch at end.

Don't run every day....but do stretch every day.

Use a heart rate monitor or google the formula for "target heart rate"
You must work in the target zone for 20 minutes for fat burning. If you go over the top end of your zone, not only are NOT burning fat, but you are also increasing the likelihood of over stressing your heart and injury to your body.

If you are a new exerciser....gradually work into longer work-outs. If you go to aerobics class, be sure to modify your intensity once you feel very winded.
If you want to do half the class, tell the instructor beforehand that you are "OK" but you need to leave a bit early. Then next time you go back, add 5 more minutes.

If you cannot catch your breath, you are working too hard. If you are breathing incorrectly, your stomach will hurt, too.
Don't do what the veterans or the instructor is doing all the time.

I have taught spin classes. Many times, people brand new to spinning are encouraged to be in class for 20 minutes to start. Then they go on to something else...and drink water. The next time, come for 25...see the progression?

Good luck to you and congrats on wanting a healthy life for YOU!
