Suggestion for Chiropractic Care for Toddler with Torticollis

Hi:

My daughter is 21 months and was diagnosed with Torticollis at a month old. We have been in physical therapy for 20 months. She also goes once a week for cranial sacral therapy and vision development therapy. Ocular torticollis has been ruled out and she has seen a orthopedic surgeon who says her spine is fine. She continues to tilt and I think it's more a muscle strengthening issue, but her PT has muscle is always tight. ROM is good, though not equal on both sides.

Botox injections and surgery to release her SCM muscle are now being suggested and I'd like to try chiropractic care first to exhaust all my non-invasive options.

Can anyone recommend a good chiropractor that works extensively with children?

Thanks.
J.

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone that responded. I will update again once our chiropractic sessions are completed. We found Dr Patricia Felder in Georgetown and saw her today. She worked well with my daughter and even got her to stand still for xrays (a miracle in itself!) I'm hoping this will start us back down the right track. I'm hopeful that the combo of PT, cranial sacral, chiropractic, and developmental vision OT will cure her...Enough already, right?! We're running out of $$ but want the best for her, just like any other parent.

So an update again...our chiro sessions went well. there was some compression and twisting of my daughter's neck vertebrae, which has been corrected with 4 sessions. We also saw a pedi neurologist who is still recommending botox. I am not thrilled with this idea and will probably decline to have her treated with botox.

1st, call Innner Sun Chiropractic. My daughter was also born with Torticollis!! She was diagnosed at 2 months although I recognized something was going on at 1.5 months. I read everything interviewed 8 pt's and took her to an amazing chiropractor. Dr. Ron Burnet, Inner Sun Chiropractic, is hands down the best around. He is very gentle and loving and has definitely helped my daughter. He also doesn't say to come twice a week for the next 6 months. He evaluates her every time she's there and lets me know exactly whats going on and what is necessary. I'm taking her to a pt named Gabby Rose. Also very good. I notice that my daughters pt sessions go better following a trip to Ron. My daughter is now 6 months old and has pretty good neck strength and flexibility although we're not done yet... But on the good side, her dr said no helmet and no surgery will be necessary!! Please call or visit Ron, you'll be very happy. One note, he is not a "traditional" chiro and his office is not traditional. He has one large room with 4 tables not separate patient rooms. This allows him to go patient to patient and treat everyone in a non rushed calm environment.
Also, please let me know what you have been doing with your torticollis baby? I assumed we'd be done by 1 yr but to hear that you are nearing 2 yrs and still treating- I know each case is different, but I'd like to hear your experiences.
Thanks!
C.

Dr. Ron Burnett (downtown) is great with people of all ages. My whole family has gone to him. He worked on my son when my son was less than three months old (he had a touch of torticollis also) and was very gentle and effective with him. I cannot recommend Dr. Ron highly enough!

Hi J.,
I am a practicing chiropractor with an office in Leander. For more detailed information, see my web site at www.docvaughn.com read the links on "Kids and Chiropractic", "About Us" and "Testimonials". If my location is convenient to you, I would be happy to help you resolve this problem. I would also suggest that time is of the essence with this issue, and you should act on it without further delay. PLEASE don't consider botox or some other invasive pharmaceutical solution until you have seen a competent pediatric chiropractor. As the twig is bent, so grows the tree. Further delay will only make the process more difficult, so I suggest to address the situation as soon as possible.

I go to Dr. Snow, who is with Kapsner Chiropractic on Burnet Road. I have a herniated disc in my back and a while ago I was in constant severe pain, lying on the couch, barely able to function, unable to sleep, drugged up on pain killers, friends taking turns watching my children, thought I may not ever be able to play with my kids again or I'd have to have surgery on my spine. I had also had sciatica for about 15 years. My sciatica is gone and so is my pain - despite the fact that I don't see him as frequently as he recommends. I had even tried another HIGHLY recommended chiropractor that is closer to me, but his treatments weren't as effective.

Dr. Snow is very gentle, and I am almost positive that he works with children as well. I think he gives free consultations, too.

Hope that helps.

My friend's daughter also has torticollis and has had GREAT success with Dr. Harry Schultz (www.docharry.com). He's located in Pflugerville in a strip center at Howard/I-35. Whenever her daughter has a growth spurt or an ear infection, they so see him and she's immediately fine right after the adjustment. We also go to see him (myself and my 2.5 year old son) and he does wonders for ear infections. Can't say enough great things about him! He's wonderful with kids. They work with and without insurance and are affordable. Tell them I sent ya! Take care, you're doing an awesome job with your daughter. W. W

I recommend Dr. Schwab at Back Bone Chiropractic as well. Also, massaging the area of the neck and shoulders can really help your baby with this. It's a lot like a crick in your neck. Make sure your little one doesn't always have their head in the same direction. This can continue to stiffin their neck.
And I agree with the others...DO NOT get any type of injection for this problem. It's muscular and those muscles just need to be relaxed and re-trained.
Good Luck!!

Backbone Chiropractic. They are very good and treat children. Have a very holistic approach and have other forms of therapy in the office. Dr. Schwab is the one I saw but I think either is fine-the other one is Dr. Clinton. Both female. Good luck.

My daughter had a severe case of torticollis and chiropractic treatment took care of the problem. I used Dr Mike Holloway in San Antonio who was my own personal chiropractor and I trusted. So good luck and I hope you find some relief for her soon.
